Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Upgrade options
« on: 11 February 2009, 09:31:10 »
My 98 MV6 came with a CCR600 which I immediately changed for a Pioneer MP3 head unit.

However I am considering changing it for a more standard unit like the bose unit.

Just wondering what people think. I assume the bose unit won't play MP3 CD's but will it play "copied CD's"?

Will the bose unit give a better sound quality than the Pioneer? What work is involved in the upgrade?

Thanks

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Weird electrics
« on: 29 December 2008, 18:02:53 »
Car failed MOT the other day (steering idler arm, two indicator bulbs as orange paint worn off and rear number plate light). Fixed everything apart from rear number plate light. ;D

Bought a new bulb and put it in, still not working but now when I start the car I get a tail light warning on the display as well as a brake light warning. Have to say the old bulb was goosed (it came apart in my hand as I tried to pull it out). ::)

Could this be causing the new warning or is it more likely I have disturbed something on the main light cluster when changing the indicator bulbs. >:(

Took my car back to MOT station this morning for retest and on the way there was a misfire/hesitation at 4000 rpm.

Idles and runs fine up to 4000 but then its as if it wants to cut out.

Any thoughts much appreciated :y

Omega General Help / Seized piston in rear brake caliper!
« on: 12 April 2010, 17:30:00 »
Replacing th rear brake pads for MOT. Easy job I thought but typically nothing is ever as easy as I think it will be >:( >:(

Offside changed no problems but on the nearside one of the pistons is seized and will not push back into the caliper. The only thing I can think of is removing the caliper and servicing it on the bench (not easy as the nut that holds the pipe on is rounded).

Does anyone have any "tricks" that I might try first?

Omega General Help / Fault codes after HG change
« on: 10 April 2010, 17:06:20 »
Thanks to the use of AndyB's cheapo tech 2 I have managed to clear all of the fault codes on my car. Ran it again for 5 minutes and the only one to re-appear is 46 - SAI Pump Voltage Low. To me this is a result in itself :D :D

However I want to get rid of the EML so that I know if I get another code in the future. I have checked everything - pump is plugged in, new solenoid fitted and wiring properly connected. The pipework in front of the engine is disconnected (because the one way valve was knackered) but all the pipes are blocked off. I have removed the relay and replaced with another and have removed the 50 amp fuse under the bonnet. All to no avail. >:( >:(

Help I am stuck now! :-/ :-/

Omega General Help / Airbag light stays on
« on: 10 April 2010, 17:10:15 »
My airbag light stays on all the time. A quick check with a cheapo tech 2 reveals it is the passenger side air bag sensor that is causing it. Tried to clear the code but not working.

Any ideas how to fix this?

Finally finished the headgasket work on my car today and started her up only to find it has made absolutely no difference whatsoever. >:( >:(

For those that don't remember the original problems were clouds of white smoke and misfire. Compression test showed 15 bar on all cylinders with the exception of no. 6 which showed 19 bar. Took the heads off to find this

which pretty much confirmed head gasket was the problem.

I have replaced both head gaskets, stem oil seals etc and put everything back together after making sure everything was spotlessly clean and I still have clouds of white smoke and a misfire. I have only left it running 5 mins but the smoke started after about 2 or 3 mins and then just got worse.

Any suggestions? :-/ :-/

Omega General Help / MOT and EML
« on: 28 March 2010, 15:06:34 »
Will my car fail its MOT if the EML is on?

As some of you know I have done the head gaskets myself and now have a host of fault codes some of which may just need clearing. However, I am in a bit of a catch 22 situation. Car needs MOT before I can go anywhere in it but does it need fault codes clearing before MOT?? :-/

Omega General Help / Followers

Have I read on here somewhere that when putting the followers back into the head you should fill them with oil first or am I making that up? :-/

Omega General Help / Head gasket locators
« on: 02 March 2010, 12:50:57 »
Is there an easy way to pull the head gasket locators out of the cylinder head so they can be refitted in the block?

Just crushed one slightly with mole grips and now it won't go back in properly >:(

Omega General Help / Cylinder Head refitting
« on: 28 February 2010, 16:00:52 »
Everything is now cleaned up and I am ready to refit the heads back on the car. Couple of questions before I do though

I have taken the breather box off to clean - does it need a gasket when refitting or is it just sealant? If sealant which one - will the grey oil cooler sealant suffice?

Should there be 1 or 2 of the locator pegs on each head? I only seem to have one on each and I wondered if perhaps someone had been there before me and not done a proper job?

Also I wasn't sure whether I had the engine at 60 degrees before TDC when I took it apart (i thought it might have been 180 degrees out). Can anyone tell from this photo (please note this is the engine before I cleaned it up - it is clean now). Cylinders 1,3,4 and 6 are all near the top and cylinders 2 and 5 are near the bottom.

Omega General Help / Rusty bores
« on: 15 February 2010, 11:05:45 »
Just had a proper look at the engine in the car before attempting to put the heads back on and there is some light surface rust in the bores :( :(

Will this be a major problem? Should I rub it off with some fine emery paper or just leave it?

Omega General Help / Head Gasket Change...update!
« on: 30 January 2010, 15:59:41 »
Right I am about half way through the head gasket change on my car. All the valves are now out along with all the stem oil seals and I basically have two bare heads.

Questions I have at this point are

Do I need to clean out all the inside of the heads? If so what is the best way to go about this?

When re-fitting the valves how do I lap them in?

How do I fit the manifold studs in at the correct torque? Is there a tool for this?

Sorry for all the questions but i am a head gasket virgin! :y

Omega General Help / Cylinder Heads.........Lots of Photos!
« on: 01 February 2010, 11:21:54 »
Took some pictures of the heads now they are all stripped

1,2,3 Bank

4,5,6 Bank - Little concerned about the deep gouge on the outside of number 6 cylinder which is where the HG appeared to have perished!

And here are a couple of pics of how I kept all the followers, valves, springs collets etc in the right order!
