Maintenance Guides / High level ( third 3rd ) brake light fix
« on: 31 October 2010, 20:21:54 »
I'm a newbie with very limited technical knowledge/ability, but with some advice from OOF members I successfully fixed my high level brake light and wanted to share the experience with others of a similar standing!

Unclip the long trim panel which houses the brake light unit by pulling down (needs more force than I expected) to release the 3 metal spring clips;

Bend the long panel down in the middle to slip the ends out from the pillar trim panels to reveal the wiring connection on the nearside and unclip the connector;

Now is a good time to use a basic circuit tester to find out whether you have power to the exposed plug (with the ignition on and the brake light depressed of course). If you don't then stop now and look for an alternative fix!

The brake light unit is held to the trim panel by 4 hidden tabs and 3 spring clips and is removed by sliding the two sections apart horizontally;

Ease the black plastic piece apart (I got my wife to push on the clear plastic tabs too) and remove the clear lens section and reflector unit;

Carefully remove the LED section and check the solder connections - particularly where the two wires join the circuit board;

Mine had a poor connection to the brown wire;

A new blob of solder, plug the LED unit in to check that it is working and refit in reverse.

Quite normal for me .. been doing that ever since I got the first Omega !!!

Lock the doors or start the engine .. light goes out .. otherwise on for around 10-15 seconds

Unless you've done Hillpers boot mod. then it will just stay on for the 10-15 seconds ;)

Thanks to you both - you've hit the nail on the head Welung - I did Hilpers boot mod about a week ago and only just noticed the light staying on longer when I started up. It's a small price to pay for being able to open the boot with the engine running. :)

In the last couple of days I have noticed that whenever any door is opened, with ignition on or off, the interior light stays on for about 10 seconds before going off. I'm sure it was never this long before.

When I lock the car the light goes out straight away.

Is this abnormal (or am I going senile)? Any suggestions?

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Re: motor noise
« on: 27 October 2010, 13:31:38 »
Hi migman.

I had the same problem with my ten year old 80k 2.5 but it sounded like there was a demented donkey under the bonnet. My (very trustworthy) mobile mechanic told me it was the secondary air pump motor bearings (as Andy B says) and the Vauxhall dealer quoted £430 plus VAT! I got a used one from Omega Spare Parts on ebay for £39.99 plus £6.95 postage and it arrived next day. It still whines but is much better than the donkey noises - I'll bear in mind the free fix if it gets unbearable!

Here is the link to the 'howto' for reinstating heat to either side of the cabin  :y

 http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1196616207

Leading on from that, you will find a straight steel actuating rod that controls the rear passenger heat flap coming from the middle of the Centre Console. This pushes into a locating hole at the rear of the same cam housing that controls the front heat flaps as described in the link above. HTH  :y

I'm sorry for being a bit dense on the technical front, but I can't find the steel actuating rod despite having been upside down in the footwell for an hour and trying to access the middle of the centre console. Any tips?

Omega General Help / Re: Low mpg - engine faulty?
« on: 19 November 2010, 14:19:07 »
Mine is a 2.5 auto which I've had for six and a half years and I average 24.2 mpg. I reckon it is around the 20 mark for town work and I have never seen above 30 on a run (90ish is my favoured cruising speed).

Dont go too far before you change it. Mine started making a noise and ~30 miles later the tensioner disintegrated and shredded the aux belt.

Same happened to mine last Friday - no more than 20 miles from noise to the plastc pulley wheel disintegrating and belt shredding. Tensioner still appears OK but couldn't get the pulley wheel on its own so whole new tensioner it was! Anyone need a tensioner minus the plastic pulley wheel?

Just pull the fuse 29a in this pic http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1176542235

Thanks. Is it definitely 29a? I have an orange 40A there and the 29b is a red 50A - I've found a post by Entwood saying he thinks it's 29b and a post by bigdods describing it as 'the big red one'

Omega General Help / SAI - unplug or remove fuse?
« on: 04 November 2010, 12:17:59 »
My secondary air injector pump bearings are very noisy and at Oxford meet No. 4 The Boy told me the pump is not needed and I could unplug it, gaining access by removing the bumper. I looked at the bumper and it wasn't obvious to me how to remove it, so I did a search on the forum and found someone recommending removing the big red 50A fuse from the engine bay fuse box instead.

Are there any advantages/disadvantages to either method?

The Owners manual identifies where the engine fuse box is but doesn't specify what each fuse does - is the 50A fuse just for the SAI?

Any views most welcome, thanks.

Phil.

Many thanks to you all for your help and offers of a replacement. I managed to work out how to pull it all apart and just as mahony suggested, the solder connection to one of the wires was cracked. A new blob of solder and hey presto, it's working fine now.

When mine went it was a bit of dry/cracked solder near the plug,just put a new blob of solder and ok  :y

Thanks for your tip too mahony. Unfortunately it's raining and I have no cover so all work has stopped for now! On the upside I have removed my offside sill covers to carry out the boot fix I found on the forum and my wife has cleaned them all for me and I found a 2p piece under there! Happy days. ;D

Thanks to you both RobG and The Boy. I've got it out - I was just afraid of breaking something but thanks to Rob's reassurance I pulled a bit harder! I'll be in touch if it's not working, thanks.
