Not strictly an Omega.....
« on: 08 November 2012, 11:33:42 »

...but its predecessor (if you take the Senator out of the equation  ;))

I've yet to post photo's of my Omega as I've not yet picked it up from the dealer, so I thought I'd add to the gallery my 1989 Carlton Gsi3000 which I finished restoring earlier this year.

I know it's a bit cheeky posting a non-Omega model in an Omega Gallery, but what the heck...

I took me 4 years to complete, although I started the restoration in 2003 I moved house in 2006 and took a break from it for 6 years (!!) and got back on it last year, so here she is...

Some photo's taken this year (on one of the few days that it wasn't actually raining!!)

Alongside my friend's white Gsi3000

Shots of car at the ONLY show I managed to go to this year due to the appalling weather, (Himley Hall, Nr Dudley WM).

Gratuitous shots of the underneath taken on the ramps at the MOT test centre.

Thanks for looking. If you'd like to see the full restoration photos of this project, and would like to see the horrors that I discovered along the way there's a thread link to the VODC here: http://www.vodc.co.uk/showthread.php?t=20623

Just out of interest, how much do you reckon it's worth?

Thanks cam. There was certainly a lot of time, effort and money spent, especially when all I wanted to do was 'do it up and sell it on'. Unfortunately (or fortunately) I got bitten by the bug and went a little OTT with it. I did the majority of the work myself so saved a small fortune that way, but left the professional side to well, the professionals, but I do have contacts at Vauxhall which made getting (now obsolete) parts easier and a lot cheaper  :y

No way could I ever take this on again though, not with all the money in the world, you just can't get new genuine panels or most of the mechanical parts anymore (not in this country anyway).

The nitty gritty (and to answer your original question) I wanted an insured agreed value of £10k but only got £5k (better than book value I guess) but all in all I've probably spent in the region of £20k (and that's how much it cost when it was new!!) with all the receipts to prove it  :o however, anyone not knowing the people I do would've spent another £10k on top of that. Some say it's worth it....others say I'm insane  :D, but It's done now and I always wanted to restore a car and this is one rare motor in any condition, so to have it the way it is now.....I'm happy....broke....and still insane  ;)

Thats an amazing re-build and hats off to you , ive owned 2 carltons in the past but only the 2.0 cdx versions
which were both great to own . I traveled quite a way once to view a GSI but was disappointed in the condition of the car so walked away ...looking back i wish i had bought it though  :( Out of all the colours i think thats the best you have , i bet it will be hard to let go of that car now seeing all the effort you have put into it ....nice one  :y

Thanks EMD. If I ever sold her I'd literally be selling my soul, the car was rebuilt with blood (scars to prove it) sweat (shares in Lynx deodorant to prove it) and tears (shares in Kleenex to prove it). I'll be buried in the fiery depths of hell in this car!!!  :-\

Looks very nice Mark and after doing the same with a Manta i know what you went through, at one point i shut the workshop for two months and walked away from it just to stay saine.

Now all you need to do is keep it clean and the underside is the worst, found a spot of rust on an antroll bar bracket the other week so it all came off to be re-painted.

But while you can sit back and enjoy the car i've got another three Mantas, '68 Opel GT, Senator S1, Monza S1 and maybe a full bare shell build on an Omega.

Enjoy the car
