IncrediMail
« on: 04 March 2020, 17:28:41 »

I have used IncrediMail for years now, rather enjoying their 'modern' approach to emails as opposed to the boring, traditional BT style.

Recently I have had some bother with the connections to their site, with error/password/authorized user messages appearing.

Anyhow, I, and everyone else who the IncrediMail services have received an email from them saying "after 20 years.............we have decided to retire our beloved IncrediMail to focus on areas that are more relevant to today’s use of technology...................we are shutting down all our servers"  and IncrediMail will cease to function on all levels!

Wow, how new tech moves on! :o :o :o :'(

That translated means:

"It costs far more to run than we can earn through ads and selling your private data."

No company offering free resources can do so indefinitely, unless the data gathered helps your other businesses make gains that can cover the loss of running them.

What alternatives are there and how do you switch over to them?

I typed a big long reply, but the useless poxy wifi in this place decided it was a great time to disconnect, and lost it as I posted, grrr

So short one.

ISP provide is best "free" one, but tied to ISP, and changing email addresses is a PITA

"Free" like Gmail isn't free, Google look at your mails to build a better profile for their advertising and data selling business.  But as most of us use Android anyway, we obviously clearly don't care about our data and privacy, or the privacy of family or friends (clearly, judging by the number of people here on arsebook)

Low cost paid for services may be of interest to some, usually around £5-15 a year, depending on requirements.

My gmail is free as I am immune to advertising.

Hang on . . . .

I used Incredimail some time ago and didn't really get on with it. As far as I am aware it is just an email client, not an actual service. If I am correct, just change to Thunderbird, but you'll need all your passwords and server settings at hand.

That is right, but it does give a service by providing a version of the usual email provisions, in my case provided by BT with my BT email address, with what I like such as a little dog notifier that pops up and barks when a new email comes through, plus icons, images, and other nice touches (I know TB will just call all that just gay unnecessaries!! ;D ;D ;D) that suit us girls at least ;D ;D ;)

It is now back to the boring BT email pages!  :( :(

From my memory of Incredimail it was those pesky pop ups that when you disabled you lost most of the benefits of using it.
Also seem to remember on all sent emails their advertising was on the bottom with things moving around and jumping up and down.Ok if you are just emailing friends but got abit silly when sending customers emails so I packed it in about 5-6 years ago now.
Was quite fun though....had the same email as you Lizzie advising they are pulling the plug
