Mot q re tax insrance
« on: 22 May 2018, 09:47:18 »

Our UK car needs its MOT. The garage normally collects and returns the car to its off street parking. It hasnt got insurance or tax . Will that be a problem for the MOT please?

presumably garage has their own insurance that covers them?

tax is ok as long as its booked in for mot, and thats the only journey it does.

If they have a trade policy, it shouldn't be an issue. You don't need an MOT as travel to and from a pre-booked MOT (& garage for repair) is exempt. You can't tax it without an MOT, so that's a moot point and as I mentioned earlier, if they have a trade policy in place, they can drive it on the road.

If you wish to be 100%, then contact the garage and make sure they have their own insurance for a vehicle with no insurance (IE not using the 3rd party element on a domestic policy.). The other option is ignorance. If they crash/get stopped, it would be reasonable to assume they would have their own insurance, so you may avoid the issues of 'permitting to drive with no insurance'.

Garages can't use the third party element of the insurance, they have to have their own. The owner uses the third party ins to drive any car that the garage lends to them.

Thanks. They are too busy to collect so we will insure it and drive it to the appointment on Tuesday.
