Omega General Help / In praise of OOF.
« on: 04 May 2017, 12:37:56 »
Once again I have received magnificent help from the Forum - see my posts on "Dead Omega", etc.
I only wish I knew enough to be able to help others here in return.....

Omega General Help / BIG thanks to migv6
« on: 04 May 2017, 12:25:36 »
I am very grateful to Albs for replacing my crank sensor this morning. He was pushed for time, but kindly fitted me in on his way as it was "only a 5-minute job" - we all know what that means! Anyway, after about an hour, due to struggling with the sensor bolt, it fired up right away with a jump start.
I do apologise for that bolt, it ain't my fault as I've never touched it, ever - my belly disqualifies me from undercar work!
Sorry it took so much of your precious time, Albs.  :y

Omega General Help / Dead Omega - any ideas?
« on: 02 May 2017, 18:40:01 »
I was just about to take my blind neighbour and his guide dog to hospital this afternoon to visit his wife and my car wouldn't start.
Green Flag attended and tried to diagnose the fault, but he said that his reader could not connect to the ECU. He confirmed that petrol was being fed by undoing a union to the injectors - big squirt!
He then used Easy Start in the air intake (bad, I know, but he did it before I could stop him) and it did catch briefly, so must have sparks, too.
We discussed crank sensor, but HE doubted it and went on about cam sensor - unlikely in a V6?
The bottom line is that I am now a pedestrian and perhaps there's a mobile Oofer who could come to me and find/repair the real cause of the problem?
My local garage man isn't that good; ok for MOTs and taking money, but not much else!

General Discussion Area / My pipes are making a noise!
« on: 11 April 2017, 12:21:17 »
My cold water pipes have recently developed an annoying (and loud!) noise if the taps are turned on too rapidly or fully. It's especially bad when the bath is being filled, unless the tap is turned on by only a small amount, when it takes ages to fill.
The nopise is like a ship coming into port (Portnoy's complaint? - sorry Lizzie, that was worse that YOUR pun) and I have no idea what is causing it. Does anyone here have any ideas, please?  ???

General Car Chat / Mysterious coolant loss.
« on: 08 April 2017, 18:02:38 »
Gents, I know - another coolant loss topic! I've consulted the guides and other posts on here, so I know the usual suspects - heater matrix (NO wet carpets) ;HBV perfectly dry as far as my fat fingers can tell; hoses all ok; no mayonnaise/water in expansion tank and no sign of a single drip on the ground.
For the last week or so, I have had to top up the expansion tank with about a quarter litre every 50 miles, which limits my range somewhat.
I would welcome an input, gentlemen and if you happen to be reading this, Serek, I may well be asking you to pressure test the system if I don't find the problem soon; in any event I will need to book in for an oil/filter change and a few other things so I am off on my Pilgrimage to Huntingdon in the near future!

General Discussion Area / WHY?
« on: 26 March 2017, 10:36:47 »
Why, oh why do we indulge in this bi-annual madness of changing our clocks? It's a phenominal waste of time, money and effort on the part of those who do not have self-setting radio code controlled clocks, and for no useful purpose. We have been doing this for just over 100 years now; if it's a good thing (supposedly) how the hell did we m,anage all those millennia before we adopted this procedure? The day is still 24 hours long, however you carve it.

General Discussion Area / Road fund licence and the Budget.
« on: 07 March 2017, 15:08:07 »
Yes, I do know what it's called now, after Churchill did the dirty on us all those years ago, but I still regard it as paying for our criminally ill-maintained roads.
So, the question is: I received my RFL reminder in the post today and wanted to know if I paid online today, would I beat any likely increases in tomorrows Budget and am I allowed to do so without losing any days off the RFL? The DVLA site doesn't help, that I can see.

General Car Chat / Update on "The engine light came on".....
« on: 26 February 2017, 17:36:54 »
The engine light stayed on all the way back from Swanage to home, approx. 200 miles. Not a lot of opportunity to drive it hard with the M3 average speed restriction of 50 mph, and then queues from J12 to J28 of the M25 - for NO apparent reason!

Off to Halfords this afternoon and bought some Cataclean and added it right away as the tank was down 68 .litres from full, so a good concentration of Cataclean. Then the Italian tune-up to the nearest Shell garage (17 miles away) for some V-Power. The engine light was still on all the way, but after filling up and swithching back on - the light was out!
Well done Cataclean, and thanks gents for all your help.  :y 8)

Omega General Help / Engine light came on....
« on: 23 February 2017, 16:53:40 »
I am on a short break in Swanage for stress relief and on my way back from Weymouth this afternoon the engine symbol on the display came on, but there were no other signs of abnormality - it drove perfectly normally and temperature display, etc., were as per normal.
Back at Swanage, I hoped that switchingn off and back on again would put the light out, but no such luck.
Should I ignore it, or does it indicate am problem and Green Flag will have to take me back home?

Thanks,
Ron.

Not an Omega issue, but my elderly gas firefront scares me more than the underbonnet of an Omega! The problem is that the radiants are not glowing half as well as they used do and therefore not keeping "Er indoors as warm as she wants to be, even on full welly. I have cleaned the holes in the top of the burner and blown the dust off the lint arrester and that's it - I don't know what else to do. Is there any possibility of a fall in pressure? I don't know what I'm talking about.....could you guess?

General Car Chat / Stupid seatbelt problem.
« on: 04 January 2017, 18:32:19 »
During the last MOT, the tester checked all the seat belts by fastening them, but it appears that he had put the middle lap buckle in the wrong (black, no red release button) retainer and I cannot get it to uncouple. This was not a problen until the other day when I wanted to fold the rear seat backs forwards and the engaged belt wouldn't allow it!
If that is unclear, I will attemp to post a photo, but has anyone met this problem before, or know of a solution, please?

Ron.
