General Car Chat / Literally saved me a week
« on: 08 May 2019, 12:46:44 »
My Omega needed an oil change, first one after cambelt, oil cooler and coolant change in january. I somehow suspected trouble, since oil filter housing was taken of and put back by a "mechanic" to whom I told very clearly to NOT overtighten the cap :-X >:( Yes, you guessed it.
When I drained the oil today, replaced the seal and cleaned everything I went to change the oil filter and after a lot of
cursing and swearing managed to undo the cap...so I thought ::) Filter housing was the only thing spinning.
After a few minutes it finally spun out of place without a need of heavy duty hammer.
Just as a precaution I ordered oil filter conversion part and loctite for threads last week....like I knew I'll be needing that ;D
So job jobbed in an hour instead of waiting for parts and being stranded without a car :y

After the work I put filter housing in a vice and tried to take a cap off...won't even budge, like it's welded on.

As above....just bounces back. I'm on my way to work by train now, car will spend the night unlocked on a parking lot :-[
Did it happen to anyone? Do parts from MFL fit to FL because I believe I still have door mechanism from previous omega somewhere in garage :-\

You wouldn't get more than 500€ for an immaculate omega here, so worthless they are. But after driving Honda for a week, Omega felt like a water bed....it really is a nice ride. People who know me don't get why I keep driving Omegas. I don't care. They grow up on you, that's it. And breathers were clean as a whistle, accept for small holes in the "ecotec"  plastic on top of the plenum.

General Car Chat / A week has passed
« on: 30 December 2018, 07:49:03 »
A week has passed since I started to disassemble my omega due to cambelt change. Last night I put her back together with a help of a  friend mechanic, who kindly provided me his ""work" car for that time - Honda 1.6 VTI, which almost killed me a few times :-X....FWD just isn't for me ;D
It's just shocking to realize how smooth and comfortable it is to drive an Omega again. I love this car.
We replaced cambelt, all tensioners, aux belt, oil cooler which was leaking, cam covers for aluminum ones, oil, etc....
She's as good as new, no leaks or anything wrong with her for now, I'm happy with the result.
It really means much, when you can work on your own car with a mechanic and he's listening to some advices on how to do things - from this forum guides.
I can't imagine how the work would be done if I just took Omega to dealer's garage and tell them to do this and that....I believe omega would came back full of radiator seal liquid and belts freshly wiped aux belt followed by huge
bill for "all the work they did" :-X They're all the same
Well she 's done, drives like a dream and I plan to keep her for at least 5 years.
Thank you for all your help guys :y

Omega General Help / Re: Torque settings
« on: 23 November 2018, 14:07:48 »
Torquing down plastic covers with 8Nm is quite stresfull as you can see it already bending on the long edges and that's just 8Nm.
So 8Nm it is. Thanks guys

Omega General Help / Torque settings
« on: 23 November 2018, 10:12:45 »
I've  just bought a set of Vectra alloy cam covers after replacing three pairs of plastic ones over the years.
Does anyone know if torque settings for alloy covers are the same as for plastic ones?
The plan is to replace them next month because it's already cambelt time.
Thanks in advance, Stan

Can this be done? :o
I wouldn't like to destroy new stat by trying...Did you just unclip the part that is hold into place by spring and pull it out?
That would make things much easier

Ok, I will follow your wisdom...had been proven to me a few times :y
I have all the goodies for Omega already...
Water pump 35€ (metal blades)
 CTS
Gauge temp sensor
Oil cooler
Washers
GM oil & filter
Thermostat + 2 O rings for the pipe

Crank and cam oil seals were replaced 4 years ago although not leaking at the time

I'd really like to keep the old girl for 4 or 5 years more..with only a bit over 100k miles on a clock she's a keeper and already a rarity on the road
