Buying advice
« on: 14 August 2017, 17:06:35 »

Hi guys, I've found an Omega for sale, for cheap but has an issue. Owner says it wants to overheat and fans don't kick in until temp warning light doesn't appears. Radiator was replaced, looses ver small amount of coolant every few months and suprisingly doesn't leak oil (plug wells aren't full yet  ::) )
Problem is he lives 150 km away and in order to drive home I can't drive with overheating car.
The reason I noticed this Omega at all is how healthy body it has. Only a small almost invisible spot of rust behind rear right wheell.
It would be a shame for it to be scrapped.
What do you think what could be the reason for overheating?
Simple as a thermoswitch or something more sinister?
Thanks, Stan

I bought a 3.0 once with an overheating problem.

It would run at tickover all day without overheating - but would boil over if driven a mile or so.

I took a chance, recovered the car and set about finding the cause of the problem. It turned out to be the water pump - the impeller wasn't fixed to the shaft & I can only assume that there was enough convection for it to tickover, but that wasn't enough when the temp raised. Cured by a new water pump  :-\

If you can get it trailered home for a reasonable price, it might be worth a punt!  :)

how about
  • buy it
  • take out recovery breakdown insurance,
  • wait few days then
  • drive it home OR drive it until it almost overheats and have it recovered to home,
  • fix it at home.

As far as I know, recovery truck takes a car to what's nearer - garage or home....at least where I live, but the idea wasn't bad  :y
And my wifey is starting to nagg....."Another one?!? Again Omega?!? Really?!?!"  >:( >:(
Things would be much easier if I was gay I swear...women just can't understand meaning of loyalty
But she doesn't dare to give me the ultimatum like "It's me or Omega"! ...because she knows which one I'd take... ;D

For ~£250, how can you not buy it, if you want it? If you think about all of the causes of overheating, none of them can be that expensive to fix. The only thing that would worry me is how long the previous owner had driven it for once the engine had overheated.

The trouble with Omegas is that you spend alot of time and money making your one right. Then you see another one which has less rust/mileage/better colour or spec. You buy it, and suddenly you have to spend all that time and money repeating everything that you did to the first one. Then on both cars repeating everything again every four years... ::)

This is why I got rid of mine, and I was practically married to my white 3.2 :-[ and why I would be wary to buy another :-\

A garage to store it or a garage to fix it?

Just to store it. We live in a countryside...lots of old folk here, maybe someone has one and doesn't need it.
Can't really have omega parked outside in winter that's coming. It will rot before next summer

So.....we've gone from buying a cheap omega to buying one that may need hundreds spending on it to fix a fault, that needs a cambelt, and now needs a garage to store it in.
It's stopped looking so cheap to me.
