Omega General Help / Looking to buy a Tech 2
« on: 01 April 2018, 22:57:54 »
Good evening folks,

As I have two Omegas and I am possibly going to get a third I am considering purchasing a Tech 2. I have seen a couple on the bay of E but I am a little reluctant as I am aware that there are a bunch of hooky Chinese clones.

Can anyone provide any guidance on what to look for and what bits/accessories should be purchased with it?

On the off chance, does anyone have one for sale?

Omega Gallery / Garage refit (with some Omega pic at the end)
« on: 01 April 2018, 00:47:13 »
Some of our friends have decided to have a new kitchen fitted to they asked if we wanted their old units on condition that I de-installed them without destroying their kitchen.

Some years ago I had made a bench but I wanted a modelled garage with some decent units - it is never going to be one of these super expense fit outs but given that I am cr4p at DIY. I am quite please with how it has turned out.

This is what I started with:

Vaguely tidy

The first few photos fitted on the same day

The following day, I put the base units in and some reclaimed work surface

Another weekend of effort and it's done. I reused the old worktop from my bench although I may change this at some point and plinths for the left hand side cabinets

General Discussion Area / Dave Waddington's funeral
« on: 19 February 2018, 07:59:07 »
For anyone who knew Dave and wanted to attend, his funeral will take place on Monday, 19th March at 2:30pm at Chelmsford Crematorium, Writtle Road, Essex CM1 3BL. There will be a wake afterwards at Benton Hall Golf and Country Club, Wickham Hill, Witham, Essex CM8 3LH.

For anyone who would like to make a commemorative donation to charity instead of flowers, we have chosen the RNIB (https://www.justgiving.com/rnib) or Kidney Research (https://www.justgiving.com/kidneyresearch).

If you are coming to the funeral it would be lovely if you can do so in your club car, and the gesture would be greatly appreciated.

We will hopefully have space reserved at the wake in the car park for club cars.

It is with great sadness to post that my Dad, Dave Waddington, passed away this morning as a result of a viral chest infection on top of his disabilities he gained from having diabetes. We don’t believe he suffered during his last 12 hours.

His sense of humour, dogged tenacity, enthusiasm for his car and the car club and love for his family stayed with him until the end.

If anyone is interested in attending his funeral, details will be posted once they are known.

God rest Dad, we will all miss you xx

General Car Chat / For those of you with rabbits....
« on: 14 October 2016, 08:06:41 »
I've just had to dig a third hole in the garden this week to bury the last of our pet rabbits. My children have had a tough week, the first rabbit died on Sunday, the next Tuesday and the last one this morning. We think that they have all had a mutation of RHD (Rabbit haemorrhagic disease) for which there is no readily available vaccine.

If you have rabbits, I hope this doesn't happen to you  :'(

Omega Gallery / 1999 Elite slow restoration
« on: 08 October 2016, 21:01:19 »
I have owned this car on and off since January 2000 having got it with 6,513 miles on it. It now has 163k on it and it has been in use with my parents for the last 4 years. A time that hasn't served it well. I got it back in February minus the Steinmetz front bumper after my Mum nearly ripped it off when she parked the front over a kerb. It has also picked up a bunch of scratches and a small number of car park dents.

I had already decided that I wanted to get the car tidied up again to back to how I want it but having read various horror stories on here about people removing the sill covers and finding huge holes in the panels underneath, I decided to have a look before committing to any work and make a judgement call.

Well, I am pleased to report that having removed the panels both side, there is very little rust. The worst is about the size of a 2p coin around one of the rivets for the weather strip. The dog legs of the back door shuts are starting to go and having removed the front wheel arch liners, there are a few bits of surface rust plus a bubble on each inner wing that are both solid after I scraped them

Progress will be slow due to funds but hopefully it will be sparkling and rust free in the no too distant future.

Omega Gallery / A few pics of mine taken last weekend at Colchester
« on: 24 September 2016, 23:05:04 »
I took a few pics of my two at the Colchester Classic Car Show, also attended by Nitro (a couple of his at the bottom).

My Steinmetz Elite

I have owned this one on and off since 2000, it's had 6 owners, three of them are me  ;D

Currently at a little of 163k

Standard Elite with Steinmetz bits and my own twist on model name. Before anyone grumbles about the 'show lights' they cut out as soon as the ignition is on but I do like them  :y

Ex-Hertfordshire V6 Special

I am the third owner of this one having bought it in 2005 and put about 12k on it since 2007. Up to nearly 176k now.

a few of the two together...

General Car Chat / We Buy Any Car valuations
« on: 11 August 2016, 09:17:51 »
Just for shits and giggles I thought I would go and see how much We Buy Any Car would pay for my Omega.

1999 Elite with 163k miles - £60, had to laugh. You can imagine if you went for it, it would have a one-way ticket to the crusher.  ;D ;D

Omega General Help / How to spot a hooky Tech 2?
« on: 08 July 2016, 13:16:25 »
I am considering investing in a Tech 2 as I have two Omegas and there is a 2007 Astra in the family.

They seem to be coming down in price and I am wondering if there is an easy way to spot a geniune Tech 2 over a nobbly copy from China?

What accessories and cables are needed to?

Cheers all.

Omega General Help / Headlight adjusters - which ones?
« on: 08 July 2016, 10:05:18 »
Morning folks,

I have the broken adjuster issue that many suffer from.

I have taken a spare set of headlights apart using the oven method and found two different suppliers of aftermarket adjusters:

  • Sparkes and Noise who make the aluminium ones at £15 each
  • Carlami on eBay who make a stainless steel/polyurethane item at £8 each

The ally ones look very good and obviously won't break but I am concerned they may oxidise and seize. Is this an issue?

Does anyone have any experience of the Carlami one (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/281256289565?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT)

One last question - I assume when it comes to reinstalling the lenses on to the headlight you put the lense and headlight body back on the oven to make the glue tacky again and then put the two back together?

Omega General Help / Inconsistently stalling
« on: 15 July 2014, 13:23:41 »
Hi all,

I wonder if any of you fine Omega wizards can assist with a quirky issue with my Omega please?

The car has been off the road for the thick end of 2 years. I have replaced the plugs and coil pack as it previosuly had a misfire across the whole rev range. Having changed the ignition components, the car runs sweet as a nut and flew through an MoT with no issues including good emissions.

Coming home on a long journey at the weekend, the car started to experience an intermittent issue. When you depress the clutch, the revs fall off and the car stalls whilst on the move. That in itself isn't so much of an issue when you are in straight line but coming up to a roundabout it becomes a little dangerous given the PAS assistance disappears. When it is playing up, it can also miss under load. The issue can also disappear quite quickly and the car behaves perfectly.

There is no indication that the problem is occuring until the first stall happens, basically, the revs fall to the idle level (circa 500 rpm) but when it it's playing up, it simply keeps dropping to nothing unless you can get to the throttle to increase the revs. There are no warning lights displayed on the dash and no limp mode indications.

In the two years it was off the road, it was stored in a dry garage with under 1/4 of a tank of fuel. It has since had a fuel tank for fresh fuel mixed in with the two year old stuff.

Any ideas as I am about to take the car off the road again as it is dangerous to drive when the issue arises?

Thanks all.

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Airbag fault
« on: 15 June 2009, 09:43:45 »
Hi all,

Not posted for a while as I have been snowed under. The Polac has an airbag fault with the telltale being permanently illuminated.

I borrowed a diag lead and used the "My Naff Code Reader" demo software that gives "Driver Airbag Squib High Resistance" as the fault. Look at the data, the resistance is 6.6 ohms where as the passenger side is under 2 ohms.

I assume that this is refering to the steering wheel airbag as there is also information relating to "Driver Side Airbag" which I assume are the one in the seats.

I have changed the airbag to no avail and oddly the resistance doesn't change if I completely remove the sterring wheel airbag.

The only curved ball is that I have had the light on since I had all of the interior including the dash out last year. I would have thought a trapped or severed wire would give a different.

Do any of you Omega wizards have any ideas please?

Omega General Help / Omega self levelling suspension query
« on: 22 August 2009, 09:45:17 »
One of my neighbours has a 2.2 DTi Elite (51 reg) whose self levelling suspension doesn't appear to be working. I suspect that the pump is stuffed as it isn't letting the air out (vent chamber full of ally oxide??). I am going to look at the pump for him but I need to know what the set up procedure is for the levelling sensor. Does anyone have any ideas?

Omega General Help / Omega 2.2 DTi - what's it like?
« on: 11 January 2008, 08:57:31 »
This is just a speculative enquiry but I have been looking through a 2003 Omega brochure and noted that the 2.2DTi is reasonably frugal (38-39 mpg combined) and I was wondering if anyone has any real-life experience of them and was willing to share their thoughts please?

Omega Gallery / Police Omegas
« on: 26 July 2009, 21:02:57 »
I've been for a day out at a local 999 show in Essex where I met up with a couple of Police cars including another Omega. A big thanks to Simon for coming up from Dorset.

Essex Police Interceptors anyone?
