Omega General Help / Re: Rear Shock Absorbers
« on: 14 May 2018, 17:41:09 »
Thanks again everyone for your advice.

Just to reply to Nick: I'm actually well aware of the dangers of worn shocks but you made a very good point about the driver becoming used to the changing performance.  My concern is to try to return the car to the original spec, with either new or repaired parts if possible, rather than reverting to the standard non-leveling shocks if I can and I was very disappointed to find that new parts are no longer available, hence my enquiries.

Good question: one is moist along its length with a very very thin deposit of oil...

Many thanks for all the replies so far, I really appreciate the help and advice.  The local garage took me under the ramp and showed me the 'electric shocks' but the 'wires' were very small bore rigid pipes so I didn't believe them, however they were certain!  Not going back there again for sure.
Replacement isn't urgent but it is on the horizon.  Does anyone know if direct replacements are available or, failing that, if reconditioning is possible?  Also, if I have to use the non-levelling Omega part, will I definitely have to replace the springs (that would be really annoying as a year ago - previous MOT, that time at Main Dealer - they were replaced because one had cracked)?

Omega 3.2 Elite 2003, 67000 miles: at recent MOT my local garage mentioned that the rear shocks will probably not pass next year.  They said that the shocks are 'electric ones' and that they don't know what the electric connection is for but they are now no longer available.  They suggested replacing with standard parts.  The shocks do have what looks like an electrical connection right at the top, although it is quite rigid and could also be a thin hydraulic pipe.
Does anyone know what 'electric shocks' do, whether they are available or can be refurbished or whether it is ok to replace with currently available parts?

Thanks for help and advice so far.  Saved me a disappointment as I found a part on eBay this afternoon but just in time realised it was not the lower part after advice from the forum.

Omega 3.2 Elite, 2003, 68000 miles.
Last weekend I ran over a silencer that had been dropped from a vehicle ahead at 60 mph.
A roadside check showed that the car was driveable so I took it home and the next day to a local garage that put it up on a lift for us the expect.
There are some marks and scuffs but the main problem is a dent in the sump.  It is not broken but the edge must have distorted slightly as there is a significant oil seepage at the edge.
A call to my Vauxhall main dealer evoked sympathy, but the part is no longer listed and therefore not available.  I've tried eBay and scrap yards but no luck.
Does anyone know what I could try to obtain one or do you know if a suitable workshop could restore its shape.  Or maybe a special sealing compound could fill the small gap?
I'm aware of the need to have 250 posts before requesting parts but I've been a member for 3 years and I'm desperate: it's a beautiful sample, owned from new, of a now rare model and I'd hate to have to write it off for the sake of a simple part!
