Omega General Help / Re: Shocks and springs recomendations
« on: 29 May 2022, 17:08:55 »
Whether you think I'm being pedantic or not, the OP has the options to make an informed choice with his suspension relative to his preferences.
Fitting after market suspension components without properly researching their suitability for any particular model, although sometimes a necessity as cars get older, can create issues the OP may not be aware of compared to the original suspension set up.
It doesn't really bother me what owners use, as I have nos original GM replacement suspension components for my cars if needed. But from own personal experiences, I would fit these parts without question over any aftermarket parts, but not everyone is in that position.
So, the choice for him is there.....

In the initial post on this topic, the OP wished to retain the standard ride height, the comfort of the original set up, without a harsh ride.
Post #6 referred to the sports chassis.
Both were available when manufacturered.
Hiwever, lowering the ride height as mentioned is a deviation from the initial suspension setup, and not what the OP asked, and will not retain the points he originally wanted.

This has been subject of discussion previously. It's all well and good having the 'one spring fits all 'approach for the rear springs, with only variations between saloon and estate, but GM saw a necessity to fit a number of different springs relative to different models, with differing ratings applicable to the various springs.
In my own experience, fitting aftermarket springs of the wrong wire diameter, or non progressively wound springs, or simply of the incorrect free length may give a incorrect ride height.
Some owners don't mind the back end of their Omegas sitting too high, or looking like a dragster, but in my view there needs more information on the aftermarket springs being fitted to ensure they are as near to the spec of the originals. One spring fits all approach doesn't take GM's thoughts into account for the differing rear springs across the model range into consideration.
GM identified the different springs with various letters, such as LA, LK etc etc etc
Only saying....

The two things are unrelated coincidences.

Really? I didn't actually think they were connected.. ::) ::) you've put my mind at rest ::) ::)
Just both came on the same day... the purported Vauxhall text was a little different, to say the least.
But, to get back on topic....

The most likely is they mis read the registration number, especially if it was a few of these volunteers standing by the roadside with pen and paper, rather than some more sofisticated device, but cloning is also the feasible alternative.... >:(
But its hassle, especially as it results in official headed looking paper being sent out that could cause distress to some.
Be interesting to see what reply I get to my email.
And the text - they got my phone no, and name (which of course isn't unheard of) but more strangely, got one of my Omegas registration no correct....??
Just need a call today about my 12 year old washing machine warranty is due to expire...... ;D

Not exactly to my car, but involving one....

Received a letter today from South Wales Police stating that my car had been seen by Community Speed Watch Volunteers to have exceeded the 'posted' speed limit in a road (details given) in Ewenny, (wherever that is?) by a margin which would result in prosecution if witnessed  by Police. No further action will be taken, but basically a slap on the wrist.
Thing is, I've never been to South Wales for over 20 years, the car in question has been parked up at home since April, and due to having had a replacement hip operation 14 days ago, am not physically able (and it is certainly not recommended) to drive at the moment.
Concerning points - 1) if these 'volunteers' were mistaken reading the registration (highly likely), how much credence can be given to their estimation of the offending vehicles speed,  2) if they were correct in their reading of the registration, then maybe there is a cloned vehicle out there bearing my number, and 3) had the letter been sent to someone with a 'weaker' disposition than myself, the alarm and distress that this could have caused.
Needless to say, today I have emailed them with a stern response. I could have simply not bothered, as nothing is coming of it, but...... And there's not a hope in hell I could have rung them to speak to anyone responsible for these 'volunteers', as finding a phone number other than 111 or 999 is nigh on impossible ::)

And today, to cap it all, I received a random text from a mobile no, claiming to be from Waltham Cross Vauxhall, giving my name and the registration of one of my Omegas, stating they have not been able to contact me regarding my vehicle, offering 15% discount off my next bill etc. Again, I've never been to Waltham Cross, never mind any Vauxhall Garage there, and certainly not with any car in the 10 years I've owned this particular Omega.
No doubt a scam if I responded to 0330 no given, but where have the cretins got my name and reg from?

Idiots......

As has been said, a slight misting of oil is permissable. A 'wet' shocker is a fail. They don't look how I would describe as 'wet'.
At least they are relatively cheap and easy to replace. Think yourself lucky they weren't self levelling shock absorbers..... :y

General Car Chat / Re: Astra Door Microswitch
« on: 24 May 2022, 00:58:03 »
Assuming Astras are a similar setup to Omegas, that picture looks very much like the central locking micro switch on the back of the exterior door handle bracket, which I have never had any issue with at all, rather than micro switches in the solenoid / motor itself. Usually the random locking and unlocking is due to a fault within the solenoid / motor itself, which I have had problems as you describe - the faulty solenoid is generally the one that doesn't lock or unlock (funnily enough ;D). Personally, I'd visit your local breakers and for little money, arm yourself with a couple of solenoids, and try them on your own car to ensure they are working correctly before reassembly. I've just replaced the complete central locking solenoid / motor previously on several of my Omegas (in fact, just done one a couple of weeks ago with one sourced from a breakers) when they have been playing up with ones from scrapyards, rather than messing about trying to repair the old ones.
No doubt someone with better knowledge of Astras (dave the builder?) may be able to enlighten you further?

Omega General Help / Re: Track rods
« on: 14 May 2022, 00:00:24 »
I think I've said it previously - I started putting together nos stock Triumph parts in the late 80's when they were relatively plentiful and cheap. How glad am I that I did - many are not now available even through 'specialists', and the quality of remanufactured or reproduction parts is questionable to say the least. Others in the Club probably thought at the time I was wasting my 'hard earned', as I wasn't flush anyway, but the number of requests I get now as to whether I have parts, makes all the auto jumbles and garage clear outs I visited worthwhile. I haven't had to buy any Triumph parts from 'specialists' for any of my Triumphs I still own, having stocks of most genuine parts that I need. Any parts that I know I am not likely to use (ie not applicable to the models I have, or I have surplus of) are available for other Club members, but at their current worth.
I have a reasonable stock of new GM Omega parts, not to the same extent as Triumph parts, but combined with the breakers I have, they will hopefully keep me going for the foreseeable  :y
Haven't got a serviceable fuse box lid retaining strap in them though....::) ;D
