Omega General Help / New Front Springs
« on: 05 January 2016, 13:53:54 »
Have just ordered an new set of Front Springs and have been suggested Suplex as a good/cost effective brand.

Looking at their website the springs have a different part number from LH to RH and after further investigation is seems the actual spring from left to right is longer but also thicker.

Just curious as to why the difference in length and thickness applies and could anybody confirm which is LH and RH .

My understanding is the "hand side" is standing at the front of the car looking directly at windscreen ..so UK drivers side is LH ..would that then follow that the LH spring is longer and slightly thicker as the car being driven ,should always have a driver sitting on the LH side and naturally that side would have more weight.

Omega General Help / Front Suspension Assembly
« on: 01 January 2016, 22:28:24 »
Have decided to buy new shocks/springs/top mounts and bump stops to renew tired front suspension.

My plan is to buy all the components required and assemble a pair of totally new legs so I then only need to remove existing..and then refit newly assembled legs ..then get alignment done .

Question I have is what other parts...if any ??..do I need as Haynes seem to show some other bits which I am unsure what they are or where to source...indeed do they need to be fitted .

Any advise greatfully received...or maybe a picture of the leg in section

Lots of post about wishbones/links and bushes but nothing definitive regardring front suspension.

What is the best option for shocks and springs and any idea of likely costs.Assume is wise also replacing the top bush and bump stops whilst apart ,again source and cost would be helpfull

Is there a supplier of the entire set up of all parts required ?

Think this is a job for March time and want to get all parts required to hand in advance so any advise appreciated

Omega General Help / Bilstein Rear Shocks
« on: 27 September 2015, 19:44:39 »
Been having a tidy up today in the "parts dept" and came across a brand new set of B,4,s for a saloon which I must of picked up on my travels.

They have the existing Bilstein top mounts .Remember reading several previuos post about the quality and poor fit of the Bilstein fittings.

Question is do I buy a set of GM rear mounts for an Estate or re use the existing GM/Sachs fitings that are on the existing shocks when I come to replace them ...or will the Bilstein set be ok ...they must be 5/6 years old now but unused and still have the existing packaging intact

General Car Chat / Front Shocks
« on: 24 September 2015, 13:40:32 »
Over the last few 100 miles I have noticed at motorway speed  ;) I get a slight "bouncing " effect in the steering column. This can be driven through by increasing speed and will also completely go below 60mph.

Car doesnt wander/knock or steer strangely ,in fact I can almost let go of steering wheel at speed and car will continue correctly without any deviation.

Had all wheels checked this morning and are perfectly balanced/alignment is spot on and tyres and pressures are perfect with no run out in tyre shape.

Omega General Help / Catalytic Convertor Heat Sheilds
« on: 05 September 2015, 15:09:40 »
The outer heatsheilds on both main cats have started to split and also have holes on the bottom surface pressumably from speed bumps or similar.

Cant tell, but imagine the inner metal and cat is fine as no blows etc,but as these are a pricey item to replace is it worth investing in some heat exhaust bandage and giving them both some additional protection from the elements to prolong their life.

General Car Chat / MK6 Fiesta Glowplugs
« on: 09 August 2015, 17:43:37 »
Daughter # 2 has had a fault light appear several times over the last coupke of weeks so yesterday she took car to local garage to find out what problem was ,despite it giving no running issues.

Guy put it on machine and diagnosed glowplugs and said they could do with being replaced although it wouldnt have any great impact on the car if they werent other than light keep appearing.

She asked me today "is that a job you can do dad" but knowing next to nothing about glowplugs I would welcome any advise on whats involved/any special tools required and should I just leave it well alone and send her off to the garage for a quote.Parts look to be about £12=00 each from Europarts

Omega General Help / Diff Back Cover.
« on: 05 August 2015, 19:46:49 »
Removed diff back cover this afternoon, whilst replacing the rear springs as access was good and am convinced had aslight leak from the bottom bolt on cover plate.

All cleaned up ready to refit in the morning but have a question. ::)

Is it better putting instant gasket sealant onto the face plate of the diff and fitting the cover dry...or leaving the diff face dry and putting the gasket sealant onto the faceplate.

Cant see it matters either way but thought there was a right and wrong way to approach this job.
