missed the bit about belt....

but Nige says my theory.....£9 belt in hand anyway now....

Short belt fitted....
Car has NEVER been so quiet.

Aux belt tensioner still moves slightly, but not jumping like it was before, or with the replacement clutch.
So all up and running, just with no air con.

How to resolve that is still up for debate, but think a replacement compressor is needed.
Thinking back to when I first got the car, the aircon failed on a long trip with squeels from the compressor, when I had it checked they got no oil out, so wonder if some damage was done back then that has not long started to manifest itself.

The belt jumping is often caused by a seized alternator pulley clutch ,worth checking while you have the belt off :y
