Chirping from cambelt - tensioner failing?
« on: 30 July 2017, 22:34:49 »

Reassembled the MV6 after a reassuring hour spent looking for the bolts I had removed... But lets not go there.

What I suspected was noisy PAS pump clearly isn't - removed aux belt and ran engine briefly, chirping still evident, sounds in time with engine revs.
Had the cambelt cover off and couldn't see any scary evidence of belt catching, so thinking tensioner is FUBAR... Belt kit fitted by me 2000 miles and three months ago, properly, and have had no other issues since.

Anything else I ought to be checking before I get in touch with the supplier? Want to minimise running time as it seems to be getting louder... Just what I need five days before the wedding!

I have suffered noisy cam belts, both Vx kits, frightened me to death, I took them back and complained. It ws a singing noise, varying with engine speed and mood of the belt. I fitted an SKF kit and the noise vanished. Somebody else on the forum had the same problem. Thinking about it, a belt running through V-shaped pulleys is liable to squeal a bit as it slides on the sides.
But you say you have chirping. My belts never chirped.

I know how alarming it can sound with a noisy cambelt. In my limited experience, I have found that Conti belts can be noisy (3 examples to my knowledge), so have now stuck to using Gates every time. I'm not saying that's an answer, but hope this feedback helps.  ::)

I had a noisy one on my Elite. Correctly fitted and was like it from day 1. Did the 40k like it!

Will run with it... if it turns out I've misdescribed or underestimated the severity... I'll stick a V8 in there...

On the V6 if the covers are not positioned absolutely spot on, then there can be a bit of noise from the belt. On my 3.2 this happened following a replacement Vauxhall kit, and a very slight change of position of the covers cured it. There isn't much free movement but worth a try for what it takes.
