Is a sunroof a good idea?
« on: 09 August 2017, 10:59:24 »

I'm thinking of changing my car to a later model. A car with a sunroof. I like the car in question but I'm not convinced this is a desirable option.

With AC, a sunroof seems to be something of an anachronism these days.

Presumably I should expect less headroom, more wind roar, and more squeaks and rattles.

Anyone (Omega Elite owners?) care to tell me of their experience(s) both good and bad with a large hole in the roof. :y

That horrible buffeting/drumming noise you get with the sunroof open  :( Seems every car with a sunroof has this annoying problem and sunroofs are only any good when the cars not moving  :P :-\

Thanks, Mr EMD.

Any problems when the roof is closed?

The sunroof (sliding head) on my 1938 Morris 12 never had any of those win-roar problems, as it was a much larger hole in the roof -  half the roof itself - and it couldn't go over 70 MPH anyway!
That's the way to do it (Mr. Punch voice)!

Im sure there are professional companies that would fit a sunroof for you instead of changing the car mr opti  :y How much it costs would depend on the size of tin opener they used  ;D

Very rarely use mine. Usually only on a boiling hot day (so that's not very often.....) if the air con needs regassing :D Got a full panoramic roof on my 'modern' car and I never use that. Should do really, if only to make sure they are not sticking and keep the runners running....

The one on the omega had a bit of a mind of its own (common problem I understand) and its days were numbered when it opened one evening and I came down next morning to a soaking wet drivers seat  >:(.

Since then I pulled the fuse and used it no further. That said, I doubt this is a general sunroof issue.

Are you talking about replacing the Jag m'lud, or the mighty signum?

I've had several cars with a sunroof, including my omega. As you said, they are archaic. Useful in the days before air con, maybe, but a pretty useless way of cooling or ventilating a car.
Imagine sitting in a queue of traffic with all the fumes coming in. If you insist on the wind in your hair, buy a fully fledged convertible.

Given this is the Baron of Lincolnshire we're talking about, I would suggest a nice F-Type convertible would suit.

The 'Mighty Signum ' is simply irreplaceable, Aaron. :y

Possible replacement for the other car.

Bit girlie. :)

If I had a nice pair of tits and a short leather skirt then perhaps yes.

........Oh, hang on, I've just checked my wardrobe. ;D

I never use mine, and see it as one of those design features from the bygone era of the 70/80s when everyone wanted a sunroof before the advent of widespread a/c.  I remember when it was always stated that a Englishman's air con was a sunroof!

Yep, a useless feature unless your a/c blows up! ::) ::) ;)
