Fitting Irmscher Back Box joint question
« on: 20 August 2017, 12:30:08 »

Fitting one this afternoon, I normally use some cement / sealant on joints but thinking forward may want to recover the back box in the future at some point without wrecking the joint, any other sealant or stuff I can use or just dont bother just clean and clamp it?

ta.

I would use a little copperslip to aid assembly/disassembly.

You could smear some clear silicone over the joint if you're paranoid about it, but I wouldn't bother.

Cheers Nick, I normally use normal silicon sealent (not on Cat joints), which copperslip? Loctite?, always get confused over so many products they do, end of the day trying to help the seal but avoid anything that may go really hard over time.

Which copperslip?

Like most general lubrication products, it doesn't matter. Use whatever you have for wheels, manifold nuts, bush bolts etc.

I just use normal exhaust paste between my (mild steel) centres and Irmscher (Stainless) backbox.  Clearly in a previous life, somebody has had issues separating them though, as my backbox has longer slits than it should, meaning it always needs a bandage fitted every time the exhaust is replaced.

Note, it would appear for some bizarre reason, not all Irmscher backboxes have stainless pipes :o.  Whether than be due to having pipes replaced at some point, or fake parts, I have no idea.

I assemble all my exhausts using red RTV ( heat resistant automotive silicone), and the joints seperate easily if required.
I have recently removed a stainless exhaust from a classic vehicle to drop the gearbox. I had fitted it in 2006, and the sliding (male and female) joints seperated easily.
I only use it on sliding joints, not anywhere where there is a gasket.
Another issue that makes exhaust removal more difficult if the exhaust is just being removed and later refitted, is that there can be a tendency to over tighten U clamps, which then puts an indentation in both sections of the pipe, making later separation a lot more difficult.
