Crazy crazy crazy......
« on: 29 August 2017, 20:40:04 »

Ok, so I've been ripping out part of a patio & happily admit that I'd totally underestimated how much rubble would be removed. I, wrongly, thought that one medium "Hippo" type bag would do and filled it in a morning. So bought another and filled that as well.

This morning I rang up to get the bags emptied - that's about 3 tonnes of stuff. "No problem", I was told - we have a vehicle in the area, it should be with you later this morning. It was, arriving within the hour. Two young lads, wearing corp gear and driving a Transit Luton, albeit with a tail lift. I showed them the bags, which due to the weight they unloaded BY HAND into the van until the almost empty bags could be dragged onto the tail-lift.

Best part was the travel. They set off from Birmingham early this morning, empty, and headed to Lincoln where they had a collection first thing. My job came in when they were half full. They finished loading one of my bags & drove to the tip in Nottingham to unload and came back 3 hours later for the other one before heading back to Brum.

This is a nationwide service with liveried vehicles, staff, call centre etc. Clearabee.
They seem a decent company, but I can't see how they make any money, vehicle costs, staff, fuel, landfill charges.

I've still got masses of rubble to shift & a proper skip coming to finish the job ;D

Someone will be along shortly to explain the economics of the hub, shared transport etc.

Sounds crazy to me like you say. ;D

But are they actually using an official waste site?  Are they in fact fly tippers who make it all pay by avoiding waste disposal charges dumping it anywhere they can get away with it?

It wouldn't be the first time a "reputable" company has been caught fly tipping ::)

Basically you pay someone to collect your rubble, they then grade it, and 're-sell it, to builders etc.

I've just had a look at their prices. Our local council seem to be cheaper than them. Barnsley council will take one item, e.g. bed, sofa, table for £10, so that's five items just for clearabee's call out charge.

Our council will take away 3 large items [fridges/freezers/beds that sort of thing]per year for free.I doubt however whether that would extend to garden/building rubble, although I don't know as I've never had any for them to take away.

Fair point - but they seem to specialise in clearing up after fly tippers - perhaps the rubbish goes round in circles  ;D
