Another years ticket BUT .............
« on: 01 September 2017, 12:32:52 »

The rear donut bushes are have some play in them (which answers the question of why my lovely omega has been wanting to throw me off the road backwards when I change direction at serious speed on fast roads / motorways  :-X :D)

Right, I believe my options are OEM rubber ones OR polys  :-\

I've no VX trade club card anymore so what sort of prices i'm I looking at / best place to get these things from ?

Question to those who have had both on there omega's ............. what's the difference in feel / noise ect ?

Also, with this new job, my backs been aching like foook after a weeks work so may need a hand doing them if any of you kind gentlemen around these parts are available ??

TIA   :)

The difference between the two is improved feel and feels more taught with the poly bushes with no sacrifice to comfort and they last forever  :y

Unfortunately I`m tied up for the next few months with other work so getting over will be difficult but if you struggle give me a shout and see if I can spare a Saturday morning to help out  ;)

Given that the exchange rate is in the toilet and the alternative is importing them from Oz... what do you think? ;D

At that price, the spacers might be worth a punt too... weren't available through Monkfish.

They were around £110-125 delivered from Monkfish, so actually £150 is pretty good delivered from the States ;)

Having driven a Polly'd 3.2 saloon, personally I'd say no. The Omega for me was always about being a comfortable motorway cruiser, it was not about chucking it hard around into country lanes at speed. If you want that, the Omega is the wrong choice.

TG has a manual 3.2 estate on lpg... and he drives it. Properly.

Anything that tightens the estate back end has to be an improvement.

Its hard to say what the difference in feel is like, as its fair to say that most of us running on polys had shagged (probably original) rubber doughnuts previously. A bit like the new tyre syndrome.

Suffice to say, once I did the Silver Bullet, the handling difference made me do TBE as soon as was practical afterwards.

Obviously, when I said I did them, I meant chrisgixer changed them while I drank his tea and biscuits :D

Be aware, they are not completely a fit and forget item, even poly'd. Very, very aggressive driving, they do shift sometimes, and need reseating.  This is a relatively easy task, unlike removing the old rubber ones that get rusted in badly.

If I got another Omega, would I pay £150 for polys?  Answer: Yes.

The extra $32 for EP1168 may well resolve the adjustment issue by dropping the front of the subframe slightly...

Never tried because they weren't available here.

The pair of EP1145 doughnut bushes, when packaged:

Length = 140mm
Width & depth = 115mm
Weight = 1.24kg  (this includes all of the packaging, which consists of clear packaging with a card label)

Struggling to find fitting guides for them, but they either fit between the supplied top pad and the chassis, or pack the gap between the main bush and the support plate... the latter being my guesstimate as this would reduce subframe movement to a minimum under extreme loads. That said, it may simply be a more substantial version of the pad in EP1145 and fitted as a halfway house in lieu of the factory pad :-\

Overall, fitting is so straightforward that you would only be looking at an hour or so to try both :y

Incidentally,

http://www.pedders.co.uk/info-contact-us  :y

Ring Monkfish on Wednesday daytime 9-3 and ask re stock. Otherwise Pedders UK should be able to sort you, and answer any questions re the fitting of EP1168 :y

Right, i've got a pair coming from cloggie land curtesy of Peter (Vega)  :y :y

After reading the guide (yes a first for me I know) and a few posts on this subject, i've a few questions ...........

1/
How easy do they come out ?
Is marks special tool  :D :D needed or will a assorted selection of screwdrivers and liberal use of a lump / claw hammer do the job ?
I see that it says that NO grease should be used  :-\
Is this for OEM ones only or OEM and polys ?

2/
Getting the new ones back in ........
is it a case of warming them up in the oven, getting them seated then bolting it all back together ?

3/
Its mentioned that fitting these can move any stress to the rear mounts so without lying in the puddles outside, are we talking about the rear diff mounts which are not available  :-\ :-\

Al pointed out what looks like a spacer (EP1168).
Would this help keep things in check or am I talking shite as normal ? :D :D

Did you ring Pedders? As they would have answered your queries ::)

3.Yes the rear mounts are the diff ones... these will either be fine or already shot. If shot they can be recast in either poly or resin... I went resin and the back end was absolutely rock solid 8)

1. Do one side at a time. Remove the plate, lever the bulk out of the middle, might even fall out. The get a cold chisel and insert into one of the notches on the flange, obvious once there... then smash ten bells of shit out of it... aim is to make that point reach the centre of the space. Flange and remnants should pull out with minimal fuss.

You can piss about with a pair of claw hammers, but why bother?

2. Poly donuts are simply a push fit. A wipe of copperslip will prevent squeaking.

If not fitting polys, don't heat them... the standard ones contain a metal flange which will expand and you'll never get them in ;D

Steve,

I'm pretty sure that they HAVE to be fitted a particular way, alignment marks maybe?
I had a pair incorrectly fitted once and it certainly livened up the ride a bit!

They had to be taken out & put back in the right way - whatever that was  :-\

Good luck

No such faffing with the poly ones...

Standard ones do indeed have a particular orientation... iirc, the structure of the bush should point towards the diff :-\

Rubber bit in the middle took a screwdriver in the middle and a bit of a tug and twist.

Now for the sleeve  :'(

Are these fookers normally pressed in with some sort of mastic / panel sealant ?

Well the 1 1/2 hours of abuse must have made it scared  :D so it only took another few slaps to fall out  :y

A good dose of Lidl's good stuff washing up liquid and a bottle jack got is started enough to get the freshly wire brushed and painted plate back most of the way on then the centre bolt bit and 5 minutes later its rebuilt the wheels going on  :y :y

I did leave the smaller top piece of bush off which sits ontop of the arm between the arm and the chassis because the original rubber one was in unmarked condition. Hoping that this will kill any NVH problems and still give me more control of the back end  :y :y

Looks like tomorrow will be same shit, another day when I do the other side  ;D

Just to add if your after a impact gun and don't mind spending a few quid, Have a look at the Ryobi one.
400 nm of twisty action for 100 quid with a 3 year warranty but beware you will need to by a battery and charger too if you aint got one  :-\

These bolts had been in there for 15 years and it pulled them out like a hot knife through butter (other spreads are available  :P)

Last time I replaced the doughnuts, I used a 3 legged puller with the legs knocked into the notches in the bush which started them moving slightly. I put suitably placed blocks of wood between the body and subframe, and supports under the subframe, with a long narrow bolt to fit in the centre of the bush with a nut for the puller to push against using the block of wood to retain the head, and they both came out reasonably easily in one piece. It just needs a bit of thinking, as you have forces pushing in both directions when you wind them out.

Fit the top pad.

Why ? Because the metal bush is designed to have it fitted... the different thickness of the original pad will allow the subframe to ride up off the main bush.

Any option on this  ::) Nope.

Can I phone a friend  ;D You can. The question is may you...

I take it the rubber pad should be removed ? Yes.
Now get it done :D

'dangle berries'  >:( >:(

If I fit the other half of the Lemforder poly bush in place of the original rubber one, it is physically impossible to bolt up together due to the bit sticking out.

I have took some pictures but can never sus out how to use dropbox ect.

If I can email them to somebody, can they put them on THIS thread please  :)

Be tight but should be doable :-\

Try supporting the centre of the plate and fitting the three outer bolts then fit the centre bolt once the plate is secured to the chassis ;)

Tried but its a no go due to the 15mm sticking out where as the OEM one sits pretty much flush.
You can get a couple of turns on the 18mm bolt without the plate but once the plate is fitted, your stuffed  >:(

Give me 5 mins, Kev has kindly offered to post the pictures once I email them to his ...........

Just to add, with the OEM pad fitted, the centre bolt and the 3 plate bolts / cover plate all bolted up to the chassis tighter then a nuns chuff

Okay, swapped jacks around and that got it high enough to do the job   :-[
One down, one to go (if it stops raining)  :y

Is there a torque measurement for these bolts or are we talking, just before you shit yourself then 1/4 of a turn  :D

Job done  :y :y

And the verdict is ...........

On the minus side
YES, you get a little bit more road noise so i'll have to turn the radio up a notch or two  :D

On the plus side

Not really pushed too much (just been around a few corners / roundabouts) but these make a hell of a difference.
It now feels like the car is getting pushed out of a corner when you boot it  :D
Before it felt like the car was rolling at the back in the first instance before it pushed out of the corner (if that make sense)  :-\
Definitely feels much better if you change direction quickly. No slop from the back end when you reverse the lock after the manoeuvre (again if that makes sense)  :-\

As always, thanks to everybody who imputed on this thread and to Peter (Vega) for the bushes  :)

Right, hot bath because I ache like a bastid  :'(
Then off to the pub for a well earned beer or 6  :D :D

Thanks lads  :)

I find the problem with this method is age related. When I was in my twenties 'just before I shit myself' would be around 450nm but at my current age it could happen before I even pick up the torque wrench.   ::)
Soooo, this method is no longer reliable for me.   ::) ;D
