Hamilton.
« on: 02 September 2017, 18:50:03 »

Young Lewis beat Schumachers all time record today by claiming his 69th pole position in F1.
He did it the hard way too. Monza was so wet they delayed the show by a couple of hours, but they eventually got going on wet tyres.
Driving there, on the limit, in the wet is a mans pastime.
Like him (and I do) or not, theres no denying he is among the very best in history.

Totally agree, he a real racer who really shows up Vettel's limitations as a driver. :y :y :y When Hamilton needs to pull something special out of the bag, he delivers. :y :y :y

Probably amongst the best of the last 10 or more years...   ...but history has some real greats.

And by your reckoning, that puts Schumacher up also as one of the all time greats ;) (and I think he is).

Hamiltons desire to race and win, I think, sets him apart from the rest of the wasters in the show currently.

We can never really tell how great Schumacher was or wasn't as he and the teams he drove for consistently cheated in every possible way throughout his period of winning.
It could be a clue that when he came out of retirement and drove a Mercedes, built to the same rules as all the other cars he was a mediocre, bad tempered midfield driver.  ;)
Personally I don't just measure greatness by results. I will maintain to my last breath that Gilles Villenueve was the greatest driver there has ever been, closely followed by Senna. Villenueve won a handful of races and no championships in his short F1 career.
Having watched Hamilton since his days in GP2,I think I might have to put him in the number 3 spot.
He has a level of talent and commitment that mere mortals can only dream about imho.
Apparently there is a programme (or part of one) about Villeneuve on SKY F1 tomorrow before the race.  :y

Great talent. I like wet races. Great leveller of talent. Both the Red Bulls were good.  Stroll impressed ( havent rated him before) Ocon continues to impress. Alonso would have been up there but i suspect he had a different agenda allied to the rear of the grid. What a travesty. Bottas and Vettel didnt impress.

Here is hoping for a damp race on Sunday........

Agree with you about Villaneuve.

TB has set me off now.  ;D ;D
Furthermore, Schumachers team mates were never allowed to beat him, which is a stark contrast to what we have seen with Hamilton / Rosberg, not to mention Hamilton making Alonso look pretty ordinary in his rookie year.
Also, Schumacher didn't have that much competition from outside his own team either. Hakkinen and McClaren had a couple of good years where they beat him, but apart from that........ ;)

Germans should stick to banger racing where it is part of the rules to hit and drive your opponents off the track. ::) ::) ::)

As a kid wee Jackie Stewart always seemed to be at the front. He also had a win ratio very similar to Hamilton (27 wins from 99 races) :y

Boring the tits off everybody  about driver safety was not his finest hour though. :-\

At the time he had a point. Drivers were burning to death in their cars due to a lack of basic firefighting and medical equipment. Its gone to far the other way now though imo.

I think 'Ze Germans' record of 91 F1 wins may well stand for all time.

Sadly the race turned out as expected ,deadly dull and predictable , for some real excitement and close racing the F2 was the one to watch , everything the GP wasn't  :(

This course was suited to the Mercedes, Singapore will suit the Ferraris. It's far from over.
