"For the first time in 300 years....
« on: 17 September 2017, 23:12:26 »

..... there's not a single living person on the island of Barbuda"   :o  :(

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/world/2017/09/14/barbuda-hurricane-irama-devastation/665950001/

Isn't it hard to imagine that in this day and age that a whole island could be rendered uninhabitable by the forces of nature?  :-\  I'm sure that in the end the resilient human spirit will prevail and the people will return to their island, but it will take time and a lot of money!  ;)

You can rebuild wooden sheds quite easily. Mature trees and vegetation takes time.

When you look at the devastation you have to wonder where you start.

The infrastructure is largely intact, cleaning up and rebuilding will take a while, but it's been done before ;)

The long term problem is that sea levels are rising, so any low lying land will be covered by the sea in X years time (I won't try and predict when!!)

Nature is only doing what is does, spreading the water from melting ice caps. Our Dogger Plain disappeared at the end of the last Ice Age and we were separated from the European mainland. So the low lying islands, and land, will be reclaimed by the sea.  Hurricanes like the one that caused so much damage in Barbuda with its winds is just the start. The ever increasing temperature of the seas and the melting ice caps will combine more and more to cost property, land and lives. :'( :'( :'(

For us in the South we must dust down our boats!

No matter how big/powerful/clever the human race believes itself to be in a stand up knock down fight nature will win.

Sea levels have sod all to do with the simbiotic relationship between ocean currents and weather systems...

The Caribbean islands aren't particularly low lying. Also don't forget, once they melt*, the polar icecaps will actually take up less space as water expands when it freezes... the salad munching Guardianistas won't tell you this because it counters what they want you to believe.

* Unlikely any time soon as the earth is cooling year on year.

... when floating .. but 99% of a glacier is actually parked on top of a lump of land ... so when all THAT ice melts the water runs off ... and the water level must rise ... que ??   :)

True, but if the glaciers all melt, two things will happen... the resultant water will take up proportionally less space and the land will rise as it won't have all that weight parked on top.

The overall effect will be pretty neutral ;)

The solution is for all of us to start making ice cubes....lots of them. Then we can store them in high up freezers, hence just moving the ice caps to our gin and tonics. Very Trumpesque, I know, but I think it might work.
