I couldn't give 2 hoots about economy. If I could, I'd have a small shitbox ;)

Autos always hammer urban mpg...

They do...but in theory they should do better than a manual, as they are always in the right gear....
You'll never be in TC lockup around town, hence inefficient.

If by 'always in the right gear' you mean forever changing up regardless of rpm/boost etc... then yes, they're always in the right gear ::)
They also hold the gears longer than you would in a manual, and you can’t footle around at 11-1200 revs like I used to in my manual astra. When driving gently, my auto box is always between 1500-2200 and changes up or down between those ranges.

they're in whatever gear the programmer decided is the correct gear for NOW. But it's a reactive mechanism, so you can't rely on it being in the correct gear at the right time. You can decide to hold onto a low gear for longer than is normal because you judge that it will be needed; an automatic can't.

Yes it is.....manual override of an automatic gearbox.

My car is an 8 speed auto with paddles. :)

Yep..manual override.....not auto.

Manual override of an 'automatic' gearbox.

The gearbox is automatic.

It's really not that difficult to grasp. ::) ::) ::) :)

I have an automatic washing machine, I don’t take bits out and give them a quick rub mid-cycle.  :)
