Plastic roads.
« on: 28 October 2017, 15:27:46 »

Just saw on the news that the powers that be are testing a new surface which is a mixture of recycled plastic and asphalt.
My first thought is about a lack of adhesion in the wet. I hope they have thought this through.   ::)

There was an interesting article I read, ... about mixing beads of oil with asphalt ... they form a layer just below the surface, if the surface breaks / cracks (which is the start of a pot-hole) then the bead gets broken, the oil softens the asphalt and the surface "repairs" itself as it is driven over, once the oil has been dispersed the asphalt hardens again but the break / crack has gone .....

Can't see any reason why they can't use recycled plastic as a sub-base, even if it's a proportion mixed in with the aggregate.  :y

I don't think that is what is happening though. Its mixed with the asphalt on the top.
I remember not that long ago when Shellgrip was the new big thing, being laid on corners and at traffic lights. Wonderfully grippy until it falls to bits leaving a shiny slippery surface exposed which is a lot worse than what was there before they put the shellgrip down.  ::)
