That's given me an idea for my next video, but I need some practice first.

What happened to the winch?

I miss gliding, it was such fun.

....
That bit of string is the most important instrument!  ....

why?  :-\

It indicates yaw - it tells you if the airflow is meeting the fuselage head-on or slightly offset. This is important because gliders generally have quite long wings and quite short fuselages. When you turn, you get more drag on one wing than the other, which, due to the large amount of leverage a long wing can exert, tends to yaw the fuselage, so you have to use rudder to counteract this, and the string tells you how well you're achieving that. If the fuselage is meeting the airflow slightly side-on, it obviously creates a lot of drag, and gliders are all about maximum efficiency.

Ta. An amazingly simply solution then   :y

Thanks for sharing, looks great from the pilots POV  8)

During the summer I watched a glider thermaling up over Harting down. As soon as he broke away north to escape the heavy showers in the area, I was surprised how much speed & distance he could cover .  About 5 minutes after I lost sight of him, it really hammered down

Excellent video Kevin and congratulations on the new height record (personal obviously). You said you were determined to get there :y

Looks like it was actually a bit of a battle coming back down with some very strong lift there!

As for attaching the GoPro to the wing... I’ve seen them suckered onto cars and surviving 120mph+. They should be fine at higher speeds, after all the likes of TG and Grand Tour use them all the time at various high speeds but, like you, I’d be nervous sticking it on the wing - Besides, there’ll be nothing but wind noise if it’s outside.

Whatever it is... I didn't do it

That site's too small for winch launching.
