According to Autocar magazine.....
« on: 17 February 2018, 17:47:22 »

...........the Peugeot 605 2.2 HDI became the first diesel car to come with a DPF as standard in the year 2000. It would be another nine years before the 'technology' became mandatory on all derv cars.

Just thought the 'lorry fuel enthusiasts' amongst you would like to know. :)

Diesel, dull?

How is that possible with an engine that revs to  4000 RPM and sounds like a Leyland bus.. ::) ::) :)

As Mark stated, but the dinosaurs decided to ignore, Euro6 diesels are cleaner than petrol, with much better economy. Keep that head firmly buried in the sand.

My boss had just bought a C350D. It goes like stink according to him, and he is a former Monaro driver and lifelong petrolhead. I'm not convinced though. Give me a petrol V8 any day.

Diesel? Dull?

https://www.carwow.co.uk/best/fastest-diesel-cars

I get why some people with little or no interest in cars go diesel. The main interest (usually the only interest such people have) is "how many miles will my car travel on one gallon of fuel"

To such people cars are 'white goods with wheels'. Functional, practical, worthy but dull. A means of getting from A to B. :-\

What I  don't get is why anyone of sane mind would buy a 'performance diesel'

Why would a man spend £100,000+ on a Porsche Panamera  but then say to himself...... I'm happy to own a £100,0000 car that sounds like a cement mixer and has a redline of 4500 RPM provided as my car does 30 MPG instead of 20 MPG, and saves me a few hundred quid on road tax.

It just doesn't add up. :-\

If I had to guess, I would say it’s company car rules. A number of schemes (including our exec scheme) cap the CO2 that a car can produce and still be allowed in the scheme. So drivers likely face the choice of the Panamera or (say) a 2.0T Mondeo petrol as both produce similar CO2.

For the head cods at our place the rules are:
- no convertibles
- no 2 door cars unless a 4 door version of the same exists eg. No 911s but 6 series coupe would be ok
- no car above a certain CO2 band (not sure what)

Favourites are Panameras (2-3 of them), that big Maserati with the awful interior (2-3), 1 Range Rover and at least 2 Tesla.

I was offered a selection of dismal vehicles, the best (and I use the word extremely loosely) being a 1.6tdi Audi A3. ::). So took cash instead.

I was about to say - the rules explain the Maseratis in the car park.. (Which I thought were Quattroportes, but I could be wrong)

As for a Maserati, I would have needed to choose between a Bora or a Khamsin. :y

But, would love one of those new Alfa saloons of which the mane escapes me.
Rated as better than the M3
But I would rate a Yugo as better than an M3 myself

Sane mine? Is this genuine or just pi$$ taking?  :-\

For me, I am strongly looking at a performance diesel, as I want 6 cylinders and RWD. Take the diesel XF-S with 3.0d lump, currently my ideal choice to replace the 3.2. (Maybe XJ 3.0d)

Is there a petrol option? No. I'd have to go for your XF-R for petrol engine, of that age. There is no 3.0 V6 petrol, it would *have* to be the V8. But that means huge price tag difference as it's XF-R not XF-S, I cannot afford the difference. This is the key issue, the alternative petrol version in 2008-15 era are not there for second hand market. It *has* to be a diesel, this may change in around 5 years, as the current low VED and more choice of petrols, filter down to second hand market.

Secondly, VED. All big petrols of this vintage, until very recently carry the £500+ VED. The performance diesel XF is no more than my current 3.2 petrol for VED.

Then there is MPG, I could expect mid to high 30's out of an XF 3.0d, maybe even into the 40's as you've seen. Compare that to sub 20mpg of XF-R. I currently only do around 6-7k per year now, but that could very easily change to 12k-13k, so I would need flexibility of better MPG on a replacement.

So some very good reasons to pick a diesel.  ;)

Actually, there is, its the 240bhp lump out of the S-type, they didn't make many and they're not what you'd call fast, or popular, but they can be had for about £8k. Also, it depends on the age range you're looking at, I think they dropped it when they moved to 3.0D from the 2.7.

EDIT: They're actually cheaper than I thought!

I'm probably not the right person to consult about a 'sane mind' because I pay £46.81 each month to tax the mighty Signum......exactly the same as I pay for the Jag. :-\ :-\

An average mileage 2013 XFR can be had for around £25000 which is cheaper than a new Mondeo/Insignia. Servicing costs can be kept reasonable if the Jaguar 3+ servicing plan is used.

Fuel consumption may be 'slightly inferior' to the XFS diesel. :-X

I'd leave that particular one alone. Four previous owners and an MOT due in a few weeks. If they were serious about a sale, they would get it MOT'd.

That looks tidy for a 10 year old car. Relatively low miles as well.

More importantly it runs on petrol just as the good lord intended. :)

I'd leave that particular one alone. Four previous owners and an MOT due in a few weeks. If they were serious about a sale, they would get it MOT'd.

May well be right. As always caveat emptor.

TBH, given you only want about £1k more for the diesel (which equates to about 3yrs road tax savings) which is quicker, 25-30% more economical and has a better range, in not sure there is much to recommend the petrol v6.

Is there a petrol option? No. I'd have to go for your XF-R for petrol engine, of that age. There is no 3.0 V6 petrol, it would *have* to be the V8.

Actually, there is, its the 240bhp lump out of the S-type, they didn't make many and they're not what you'd call fast, or popular, but they can be had for about £8k. Also, it depends on the age range you're looking at, I think they dropped it when they moved to 3.0D from the 2.7.

*Michael Caine voice* "Not a lot of people know that"

EDIT: They're actually cheaper than I thought!

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201802093580056?maximum-badge-engine-size=3.0&radius=1500&model=XF&postcode=ox279bn&make=JAGUAR&onesearchad=Used&onesearchad=Nearly%20New&onesearchad=New&sort=price-asc&advertising-location=at_cars&fuel-type=Petrol&page=1

But as my comments, it’s not vintage I’m looking at. I’m looking at 2013 facelift XF-S, they dropped the 3.0 V6 petrol.

Also note stupid VED!

The 3.0 v6 XF petrol, even the older NA one, isn't a bad motor really.  I had one on a several hour test drive, and what a lovely car to drive (except the AC was bust, and in was a bloody hot day ;D).  Would certainly give the Omega 3.2 a good spanking, but would be embarrassed by the more powerful variants of the 3.0d, be it the 271bhp or the later 300bhp ones.

2013 XFS 3.0D.....Mr Tunnie. :y

A nice example but only 240 BHP. The 2017 XFS I had on loan recently came with 300 BHP.

My mistake, this one comes with 275 PS/271 BHP. :-[

Sorry yes, meant 2008-15 generally no real petrol version alternatives, not in big numbers anyway, especially in RWD.

Facelifted XF has some significant improvements, hence I would only consider one of these.

Facelift car arrived around 2011.

Around 2012/13 the 8 speed ZF auto replaced the 6 speed version for improved economy, along with stop/start which I always switch off.

The 435d is a monster. A colleague had one, would comfortably show my M140i a clean pair of heels  :o

I can vouch for that from personal experience but the D3 is even quicker.  :y  Not bad for a car that will still do 50mpg ..... but not at 170mph obviously.  ::)

Not drastically different for Portfolio spec.  I have copies of the standard features pages from the brochures for both pre facelifted 2011 model and 2012 facelifted model.

If you were stepping down a notch, the facelifted Premium Luxury offers HIDs over the PFL equiv...   ...not that many Jags from the Tata era are usually standard spec.

The real killer with the FL version is the stupid stop-start wank, and the early 8 speed ZF autos had a high warranty rate (as did the early 6 speed, but was resolved by the time the XF came along).

Vw had stop start, was not really a fan due to diesel start up feel.

Would consider Premium Luxury, as you say it has HIDs which is a must.

Needs to be XF-S due to sports seats and other little touches I like.

That said car share still going well, so no urgent need to replace the 3.2.

I didn't notice any difference, visually or feel, between XF and XFS seats for same model ie Prem Luxury or Portfolio...

As said, for the Portfolios I was looking at, can't say I noticed the difference between the XF and XFS.  There was a noticeable difference between Prem Luxury and Portfolio, from a comfort viewpoint - not that the Prem Luxury was in any way uncomfortable.

Maybe they all had same seats - apart from the base spec stuff, most have unique specs.

The downside is, they are all leather, therefore not as great as they could be. Portfolio XFs do have seat coolers as standard, which helps a bit in the summer.

Noticed later ones of previous shape had a R Sport trim, with partial leather. No memory seats though.
