Well, do I win a prize?
« on: 10 April 2018, 21:01:41 »

A prize for being prize prat ;D

As many know, I'm into radio controlled models, and for the last couple of years, that's been quadcopters (drones, for the uninformed).

Well, I built up a new little racer 2 or 3 weeks ago, despite having the bits, bar the FPV camera, since last spring/summer time, but have been really fighting to get the telemetry to work.  I check, double checked, and triple checked all the wiring, the flight controller settings and the transmitter settings.  And then checked them again, and again, as the damn thing wasn't giving any telemetry data back from the flight controller, just from the receiver itself (which is pretty much naff all).

So, imagine the lightbulb moment, when it dawned on my that because I mounted the receiver upside down, I'd done the schoolboy error of connecting the wrong pin.

Quick bit of resoldering to the right pin, and issue resolved. What a first class pillock  :-[

It's a great feeling when you find the solution to a problem and it works though  :)

I often find in such circumstances where you are too close to the job, it is make a coffee time, while you mull things over and realise what an idiot you've been by missing the obvious,  ::) ::) ::) allegedly. ;D ;D ;D

I hope that this doesn't start a thread on "What a b*llocking idiot I have been", because I do not want to overwhelm the Forum with my examples, thereby denying anybody else a look-in!  :-[ ;D

It's nice when you find you've made a mistake like that and, upon rectifying it, discover that, as a bonus, you haven't let the smoke out of anything expensive. ;D

It takes immense skill to keep all the smoke locked inside the boards :)

Though the solder pad is desperately close to a batt +ve, and the current on this board is rated to 160A IRC (how the F does a multilayer board handle 160A, cant get my head around it), so potential to tune in the receiver to channel smoke.

Am slowly building a Guillows Cessna 172...

The fuselage was fundamentally finished when it rolled from its parking place... Picked it up and after a cursory check it looked OK. Moved it yesterday, (rebuilding bedroom) and managed to put a hole in it :-[

Still, repairing it and building a replacement aileron that the dog ate... might offer some respite from Ikeas best efforts ::)

According to the best of theories a bee cannot fly, for the same reason. However, nobody told the bee that, so it just got on and flew!  :)

DPD also win a prize, sending me an email they had delivered the camera for this quad to a neighbour at number X

Well, I was in all day, and no card, and I was listening out for a courier van, and as sure as I have a hole up my backside, no courier came down this road all day. But I checked with number X in my road when he got home from work on the offchance, but no, nothing delivered.

Fortunately, because all couriers are thick as 2 short planks, I guessed they sent it to a road (with a different name) about 1/4 mile away, so I walked round and knocked on number, and sure enough, the confused lady had a parcel for me, plus a card from number X in her road, who was equally confused.

Mongs.

I waited in for a package from DHL, in the living room all the time, and found a card on the doormat saying that nobody was in. He must have crept up the drive, knocked with a feather duster, popped the card in - and legged it rapidly!

If it's any consolation, Ikea managed to deliver everything today... Only two minor hiccups. One mirrored wardrobe door had been folded :o and another dropped on one edge rendering it scrap...

A quick phonecall and the replacements will be here on Sunday  8)

Well, thus far, my only grumble beyond the broken doors, is that the floor and walls of my room are less square than I had presumed, still in the last three days, I have gutted my room, done three tip trips, laid a new carpet, built all the wardrobes and interior gubbins and hope to have the bed done before, well, bed time...

That should leave me three bookcases and moving everything that wasn't thrown away back into the room by the end of Tuesday... :D

It's not somewhere that I habitually frequent... But they sold what I required at a price which I deem acceptable. If it lasts half the seventeen years that the previous MFI stuff lasted, then I will be content with the ballache that is visiting Ikea on a school holiday...

It's shit not having kids, as you never know when the wee snotty bastids will be foisted on the general public...

Its crazy, every time I go there (for their 50p hotdogs at lunchtime ;D), they are queuing for ages at the tills. And to buy Ikea cheap tat.  I never ceased to be amazed (but then this is Milton Keynes).

MFI
People used to knock More Flucking Idiots, but their stuff towards the end was actually quite reasonable and decent value.

When I bought my first house in '91, I bought some fitted bedroom furniture, and various lounge units.  The fitted bedroom furniture stayed with the house (and from the brochures still available online at Zoopla etc from when it was last sold in 2013, still looks in decent condition). Some of the lounge furniture I still have, and some of the stuff still in good condition went to our local recycling centre for resale.  The TV unit, though, I admit was at best "adequate", silly dowels and glue only holding it. But then I think it was about Ł15 (in 1991) ;D

Fitted a kitchen from MFI in the last house and it was decent stuff. Better than the rubbish the builders fitted here.

Fitted a kitchen from MFI in the last house and it was decent stuff. Better than the rubbish the builders fitted here.
It;s not the builders ,the developer / specifier picks the crap to get installed  ::)
I did quite a few "MFI" kitchens before they went bust
most was good stuff.
I got things like worktops, sinks and appliances elsewhere  :-X
(mfi made money from extras ,designers where told to add all the fancy trims ,decor panels etc )

in the end ,mfi made it complicated ,you ended up buying off some unknown  " sister company" on the invoices
worried if you'd ever get delivery  :(

In 1990 I agreed to pay Ł3500 to have a nice oak kitchen installed by MFI. I paid a 10% deposit before work started.
When the fitters turned up to fit the kitchen they discovered that the salesman / surveyor had measured it wrong and the units wouldn't fit, so they had to fit a smaller cupboard at the end of the walls.
I nipped out of work to meet th salesman and ripped his fickin ears of. "Never mind Made For Idiots, its sold by fickin idiots, was one phrase I can remember yelling at him.
Anyway, once fitted it was a lovely kitchen, and what made it nicer was that I never did receive a bill from them for the balance of Ł3150.  ;D

As for Ikea. In the late 90,s swmbo won a Ł1000 Ikea voucher, and wanted taking there to spend it. Daughter was also moving into her first flat so she wanted to come too. I borrowed a Transit pickup from work and off we went on a Saturday morning.
We were there when they opened, and didn't leave until after closing time. They had these big trolley things you put your flatpacks in and I was relaying four of them around the shop until we got to the checkout, which took hours by the way.
I was almost too knackered to drive home.
I still break out in a cold sweat thinking about that day. I swore I would never go back, and I never have.  ::)

Yes, similar to when we decided to get some desks for our study. I filled my old laguna to the roof, back seats down, tailgate roped shut. Didn't look too bad as the car was still pretty much level.... until I drove off. The towbar had settled on the kerb so was taking most of the load!

I fitted a few MFI kitchens from their quality (Hygena?) range and was quite impressed. MFI had gone by the time I fitted a kitchen here at home from Magnet, and although I specified the layout and units, it turned up with all sorts of decor panels and trims I had not ordered! Also the carcasses were 16mm and not 18mm thick as promised, so would not take the weight of my combi-microwave, and required a strengthening panel. >:( I would certainly not buy from Magnet again. >:(

MFI sold Hygena (mostly flat pack /self assembly) and Schreiber (now owned by sainsburys)

hygena where 18mm carcasses ,I always beefed up the back panels and sealed all raw edges with acrylic sealer.
(any raw edge of chipboard  soaks up any spills and blows out, the death of many n under sink unit)

never tried magnet , some b&q,wickes etc, are 15mm and require beefing up
800mm and 1000mm wall units sag under weight ,beefing up under the light pelmit helps,
but it's best picking single door units if cost is not an issue

My turn today.

Was about to order a batch of PCBs from the nice man in China, when I noticed one of my component footprints was completely wrong due to my inability to do simple maths. ::)

That could have been a waste of time and money.

Indeed, and I think everyone knows that.  But this was Demon Tweaks, selling stuff (allegedly) on behalf of Sealey UK....

I think my BS detector might have activated.

It frequently is, but I stupidly though Demon Tweeks would be hassle free.  Silly me.

Still, they turned up today, so that's all sorted as well :)

Not sure what sort of feedback to leave...  ...I'm not shy to be brutally honest on feedback...

...which leads me onto another gripe about egay, that's becoming more and more prevalent - some kind of blackmail to make you leave positive feedback and 5 star DSRs.  They tend to get -ve and 1 star DSRs, as I don't respond well to blackmail.

I ordered an electronic TPS for the V70 from a company on e-bay couple of days after deadline for delivery and no show I got in touch with seller.Turns out they shipped it by a company called APC who apparently tried to deliver it while I was out but didn't leave any notification that they'd been.Phoned APC today to re-arrange delivery, they can't re-direct it to me at work[instead of home]without sellers permission,so I said leave it with a neighbour and they asked which one so I said any will do. But you can only specify one,how do I know which one will be in?By the way work is 3mls from home and this company do deliver to the same site.

Fun, isn't it? The desperate explanations of how feedback works are particularly entertaining.
