Best/worst £100 cars.
« on: 01 November 2010, 22:09:12 »

Best £100 car I ever bought was an '87 Renault 25  Monaco. A non runner that only needed a battery to get it going. Even had 6 weeks MoT, only needing a sidelight bulb for the next one 8-). Car had had about 8 owners too many and had been abandoned in Brighton. Got 3 months out of it before a learner drove into it :'(.

Worst £100 pound car was an '83 Granada 2.8 ghia x. Needed most of the floor pan welding up for MoT. >:( Now always look under cars before I buy them. Drove like a box of nails and the roof was made of filler. It even did 16mpg :o.

Oh to be young and stupid again... ::)

Mk1 Cortina 4 door GT, 1965 1500cc pre crossflow, but 'tweaked' and had a Lotus Rev Counter fitted.... Paid £50.00 for it sold it after about a year for £350.  The guy who bought this 'unburstable' car put the back suspension through leaping a hump back bridge with 2 bags of cement in the boot, later managing to blow up the engine on the M1 last heard that he left the car with the recovery company who claimed it after 366 days...

Wish I had that car now...... :y :y :y

I must be too young for a £100 car.
Best I ever managed was £180 for a renault scenic with no MOT.
Fail sheet was new brakes and pads, new cat, and some bulbs.

Checked the brakes - calipers sticking so I polished them up. Brakes and pads were OK.

Checked the cat - needed a new lambda sensor (fiver at the scrappy).

Bulbs - some twonk (probably the MOT garage!) had put them in upside down.

Took it to my local pet MOT-er. he says "what about this 6 inch rusty hole in the chassis?  [smiley=shocked.gif]

Bit of tin + mig + filler, and back in she goes...

so bill is 225 inc. MOT test.
I phoned up the previous owner, and tells her that the garage she took it to was trying to rip her off - and dangerously, too!

I ran it for 3 months til I broke the torsion bar (too many books in the boot + a trailer).

Stuck it on ebay and got £400 for it.

P-plate mini-facelift Omega Elite.

£100

complete with 9-month's MOT and four month's tax.

only real problems being peeling lacquer on roof and a leaking heater matrix.

going to be used as an experimental car for "other" engines.

Rover 3500 SD1, £50.  Drank like Oliver Reed on a bender but by God it went like stink and handled wonderfully.  Taught me loads as an 18 year old.

At the other end of the scale, a 2CV Dyane, bought for £55 and sold two months later for £350 after doing nothing more than giving it a T-Cut, new canvas roof for £30 and a MoT.  Beat that, Brewer!  ;D

Brought a 1954 Ford Anglia 100e for £75. Eventually ran out of metal to stick the Isopon to and had to push the damn thing all over the town to get it started. Swore I would never ever buy another Ford and apart from a company Ford Escort have stuck to that promise!!

I bought an 850 cc mini for £25. needed head gasket and the little bypass rubber hose.

It was taxed and MOT'd. ran it for quite a while. One day , There was a note on the windscreen saying did I want to sell the number plate. MHG 325  -   YES. sold car complete for mega money (3 figs) The new owner even drove me home in his BMW.

Best £100 car was a Lotus Cortina which I ran for nearly a year. Advertised it in Classic Car and a punter in Italy offered me £600. He was a collector and restorer of Lotus cars. He tried to arrange collection while one of his cars was being delivered to the factory. It fell through so he wired me £100 for my trouble. No trouble. I broke the car and shen everything had gone a guy turned up and took the shell and logbook for a guaranteed £100  ,without even viewing, regardless of what state it was in.

Rover 414 (im only 21 remember) bought it for 150 with like 86k miles on her, had it for 3 years, only thing that went wrong on it was the dizzy cap failed as i was hooning on down a duel carriage way at 70 :-X ;) head gasket never failed (was never changed either). oh the only other down side was it ended up with noisy tappets (doing no damage, just sounded like a bomb going down the road).... in the end sold it for 295 :D  ;D :y

Are you sure it is a mini facelift? I thought mine was one of the earliest late 97. sound controls on steering wheel and window controls on central console next gearstick

Can I have it after you? ;D

Vauxhall Senator 24v in the Falklands for 200 quid (not 100 I know but i thought it's worth a mention!) The exhaust was in a mess, and it sounded like a volcano! It was falling to bits, suspension was shot not to mention the arches, it still floated like a cloud though! (no MOT requirement in FI) Got the zorst welded and it was great. As it was cold and i only ever did very short journeys i managed 6mpg from it!

Sold it for a quid when I left to a Chilean guy, as the solenoid in the starter packed up!

1973 3500s Rover with the gearbox missing-guy i bought it off blew the box (manual) and the garage that was sorting it went bankrupt and he couldn't find another 4 speed box. I bought the car for £100 and  bought a box from a local bloke for £20. One of the best cars I ever had-very quick and the engine would whine. Wish i kept it.

Bloke across the road from me has a lovely example which he races. His next door neighbour has a beautiful mk1 escort RS1600, big arches etc. which he rallies. Im obviously in the wrong job. ::) :'(
Best sub £100 car I bought was a 1991 24v Senator, about 7 years ago. Paid £15 for it. Local useless mechanic had condemned it for a few faults which took about an hour to fix.
I kept it on the drive in case I needed any spares for my own Senny, but I never needed anything from it, and it eventually rotted to the point where it was realistically beyond repair.
When my own car failed its MOT due to serious tinworm I had to watch both of them being loaded one on top of the other onto the back of a truck and taken down the scrappy.
Heartbreaking. :'(

I am afraid to say that I have been responsible for the untimely deaths of quite a few cars that woiuld now be described as classics and that I would now love to still own. Endless Mini Cooper S's (Mk1's) including two 970's Worth more in parts. The Lotus Cortina was a Mk1 and even had the desirable(?) A frame rear suspension as opposed to the normal cart springs. Of course this was a hundred years ago when a hundred pounds would also buy a new 3 bed semi or 2000 mars bars. ;D ;D

Now I would never dream of breaking a car but I am still looking for another mini facelift Elite in reasonable mechanical condition not bothered about the bodywork!!
