Crash History.............!!!
« on: 30 June 2009, 20:07:33 »

Following on from the CAR HISTORY thread, I just wanted to put down a record of my car/vehicle crash history......

1. First close call.....spun my red and white 1969 Mini Cooper replica going down the old A453 towards Tamworth. (Went over the crest of a hill in the wet a bit too hot and came across an old couple in a Minor in the middle of the road turning right. Slid about 150yds doing a 180 as I went) LESSON LEARNT......SLOW DOWN......

2. First proper crash....Hit the rear of a Transit van in my Fiesta 1.1S. (the Transit did an emergency stop as a lorry came around the corner on our side of the road) LESSON LEARNT......DONT DRIVE 6 FT FROM THE BACK OF ANOTHER VEHICLE.....

3. Crashed my works brand new 1990 H reg Mercedes van (going down a single track road in early morning ice, the gritter in front me pulled over to let me by and I put it in the ditch at the next corner......!!) LESSON LEARNT......NEVER OVERTAKE A GRITTER.......

4. Crashed another works Mercedes van (turned into a pub car park in Carlton, way too fast and hit the car park wall) LESSON LEARNT.......SLOW DOWN BEFORE TURNING......

5. Crashed my girlfriends (at the time) custard yellow Austin Metro (waiting to turn left at a junction, noticed a gap in traffic, so pulled out, sadly the car in front of me hadnt moved) LESSON LEARNT.....OPEN YOUR EYES......AND DONT DRIVE METRO's

6. Crashed a 3rd and final (got sacked!) works Mercedes van (reaching over to the glovebox going around a right handed bend, left rear wheel went into the roadside dust, spinning the van round, sending it over the road and on its side in the adjacent field) LESSON LEARNT......DONT BE SUCH AN IDIOT.......

7. Crashed a rented Toyota Corolla (into the arse end of some daft woman who, in the rain, pulled out right in front of me onto the A34 dual carriageway near Stoke.  I was doing 50mph but had no chance to avoid her as she was about 40 yds away when she decided to go. She got done for driving without due care and attention in the end. £3000 damage to the hire car) LESSON LEARNT.....WOMEN DRIVERS ARE DANGEROUS..... ;)

The last of these was 9 years ago now, but doesnt it look really really bad when you write it all down.....!!!

I have full protected no claims now, although I still wouldnt class myself as grown up (at 38) and have no intention of going back to my old "Wrecker Webster" ways......

 ;D

PS Never had an airbag go off yet.......

Got rear ended by a 1994 civic a few months ago. Civic written off. Mig needed a good polish, wouldn't notice the tiny scratch unless you knew it was there ;D ;D

Although if I was to put my sisters crash history it would probably overload the server. ::)

Only one was when I had my Vectra V6, got rear ended by a Corsa. Some idiot pulled out about a meter in front of the car two cars ahead. Braking ensued, everyone stops but then I heard tyres screeching and then a shunt. Drove 25yds up the road to pull over safely to find minimal damage (I had a towbar on) Just some paint been shaved off. Then the Corsa pulls up, front end stoved in, dumping coolant where tow ball had punched a hole in the radiator and the front crossmember bent too. All settled amicable though because I was under 21 at the time the courtesy car company wouldn't let me have something of a similar size. So I got given a poverty spec (and it really was poverty) 56 plate Fiesta 1.25, while my bumper was replaced, even though my insurance company said I could have something similar to my own car.

Dads escort, overcooked a bend, signpost and small tree didn't stop me. Never drive escorts - they let go unpredictably

My Acclaim, too hot into a corner, lifted, spun, went down the road for about 200yrds sideways, rad grill collecting hedge, rear bumper just avoiding traffic coming the other way. No damage. Lesson - dont lift heavily in fwd car.

Works Maestro van - scraped a wall. reverse parking a van in tight spot is easy, driving it out forwards is more difficult  :-[

Works Escort van - reversed into a lamppost, quite gently. Rippled floor pan. Lesson - use brake, rather than slamming in first and attempting to accelerate  :-[. Oh, and dont drive escorts.

Works escort van - head on with a capri. Shitty pants moment. Lesson, trying to get to a customer appointment on time is not THAT important.  And don't drive escorts

Works Escort van - hit a tree that had fallen in lane (which I had seen earlier in morning). Lesson, don't drive like a idiot, and don't drive escorts

Works transit box van - hit a house. Opps. Lesson - £14k of damage to the house actually does little damage to a transit ::)

Works transit van - spun it on a tight s-bend on a track, ended up with all four wheels in air, front and rear bumpers on opposite banks. Lesson, digging out banks in side of road is a hot job ::)

Works fiesta van - hit a tree (surprisingly close to where I hit that tree in the escort). Lesson - lightning CAN strike twice.

Above are only ones that were my fault....

89 Montego, crashed into a fiesta and it bounced 3 feet in the air. Only hit it when my bird said is'nt that your ex getting into that car, had a look and whacked into the car in front.

Shameful thing was my ex was getting into my old driving instructors car at the time and both  saw it happen :-[

Fiat Punto - lifted rear end about two feet in the air reversing across an unlit carpark and not noticing a bollard below the height of the back window.  Did that with an audience of about 26 people just after a shift at work.  New bumper, floor rippled, and tailgate.  Work had managed to install and switch on a lamp-post by the next evening.

Toyota MR2 Mk1 - Drifted sideways long enough for the girlfriend to shout at me, me to reply and only then did the back end grip.  Unfortunately it gripped that well that from drifting sideways it suddenly went forwards, through a hedge.  What was even more unfortunate was the concrete bollard hidden in the hedge which caught the front wing good'n proper.  Hammered that one straight myself and managed to sell it :)
Lesson learned - going sideways is really cool  8-) - concrete bollards and constant reminders from the now wife about an incident that happened years ago is not.

Hire Van - Went round a corner on the exit of a bridge only to find that someone coming the other way had decided they owned both sides of the road.  I slung it across, forgetting that there was another 18ft of me.  Folded some aluminium down the side of the van.  Had to reverse to 'unwedge' myself from the corner of the bridge.  Got to the Hire place only to find the hire company had marked the exact area on the check-out sheet as a 'small scuff'.  They started to argue that I'd damaged the van, and when I drew breathe to reply someone else dropping a flatbed off reversed hard into the front of my van.  They shut up, and I left, sharply. :y

Omega  :-[ Driving through a puddle.  Lesson Learned - diesel engines don't compess water, and it's  a very. very long way on the back of a flat-bed from Scotland to the Midlands.

Omega  :-[ oooooh, double shame.  Woman coming up to a roundabout in a VW Beetle braked and then lifted after seeing it was clear.  She then braked so I 'assisted' her on to the roundabout. ::)  Got more from the insurance company for a write off than I paid for the car, so it wasn't all bad  ;)

just the 2 to confess...

1st one was when i was 16 (yes i know, only 16?!!) driving my '89 escort 1.3 along the old highway in colwyn bay going to fast over a hill, stream running across the road and followed by a tight bend with 10ft wall facing me... ouch!

2nd a few years later, driving my astra gte along the A road between Mold and Flint stuck behind an old guy doing 40mph in a mk3 astra saloon, all of a sudden a large flock of sheep flooded onto the road right in front of us, old guy slams on and ends up sideways across the road. my wheels lock up (no abs) and slam into his rear corner!  :'( I loved that car aswell!

Nothing to declare for the last few years tho.

You couldn't make them up could you!

A few samples   ::)

With girly in a Morris Traveller (yes I'm that old) both a little uhm "stoned"- in a moving line of traffic, "oooh" she says " look the car in front has lost a wheel, there it goes!" ...pause... "No its ours" I say, "sckreeeeech krunch" says car. Lesson - if you can remember the '60's you were not there.

With young family in a new car, sided by a geriatric  spinster not looking at a junction. Cue big wipe out, check family ok, hobble ( bruised legs) to her Renault 5 that was imbedded through the wall of a churchyard, prise open door lean in and ask if she's Ok. She replies "They said I would lose my licence if I did it again", stand up in disbelief to realise that she has actually crashed into a funeral going on AND it was a policemans do - he had been shot it was a well known story locally, all the policeman there are as pissed as rats and lurch about as they try to help. I needed a few days off work after that one.

One day I'll tell you about the car that I bought twice, without knowing it   :P :D

my 1 and only...so far *touches wood*
was when i was 18 (20 now)
came hammering it down a hill into a bottom and back up other side about 70 for an off camber corner, thought i'd lost the front end so steering into it and backing off i lost the back end, went into a ditch before a banking, rolled it and skalped the banking before landing back on wheels facing opposite direction
lesson- get a better car *cough*to speed in *cough* lol

Both written off on the M25 a couple of years back in roadworks the traffic had stopped suddenly I managed to stop ok but was close to the volvo in front the Escort behind only stopped as it tried mating with the towbar pushing me into the volvo hardly any damage to the volvo he gave me some details and drove off I never did here anything from them I am not sure it was actually insured they were foriegn and it was a bit of a wreck . both the omega and escort had to be recovered . I was unable to open the bonnet on the omega and the boot floor had pushed up managed to get one rear door open but not the other . I actually got more from the insurance than  I paid from the car  :)

Blimey. I am glad I don't live in Britain anymore with you lot about. My motto of always keeping a good distance and a half from the vehicle infront and watching what idiots are doing behind me as well has stood me in good stead. No accidents in over 40 years of driving with lots of years of over 20k a year. Have been a passenger in a few. Nowadays I am very choosy about who I travel with as most drivers seem to be totally brainless and totally unaware of their surroundings.

had a few competing in rallying just to know the limits.

I have had one shunt when I was stationery at road works in my 1 year old Mk4 Cortina Estate, by a Granda driver who forgot to brake!

Apart from that bumped the vehicle in front twice at roundabouts with them being too bloody slow!! ::) ::) ::) ::)

However, it was the near misses that scared me.........three in particular were veeeeeeeeerrrrry serious and close calls with the reaper!!! :o :o :o :o :o :o

Not bad in a million miles of driving though! 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-)
