Power steering? Question for TheBoy?
« on: 15 September 2006, 21:13:25 »

This was a question i asked Jaime when he was on holiday....so not suprised he didnt reply.

And i thought id ask it here as it might be of interest to others.

Jaime, is it possible with a tech2 to lighten the power steering?

My meega is a bit heavy steering wise, compared to my veccies....on low speed or no speed and turning around etc.....i know the veccies are lighter but just wondered if the power steering can be reprogrammed??

I remember Tunnie in that thread saying the power steering was quite a bit diff between his and his dads

Is it possible??

Cheers

On the V6 models, which have the servotronic speed sensitive steering, there are 3 different levels of 'lightness'

afaik, only v6 had the servotronic speed sensitive steering...   ...didn't think the 2.0 had it, no idea about 2.2

Do you have 'ZF' logo on reservoir bottle cap?

I posted this while you were away, but i think the 2.2's must have it as well.

My steering feels a lot lighter compared to my dads. Both 2.2's...

it feels a lot 'tigher' & 'heavier'

I generally notice it when moving cars on the driveway, I had to pop out, and his car was bloking mine in as usual. So moved them around, my dads feels a lot heavier at slow speeds.

Tyre pressures around the same, maybe a couple of Psi out but not much...

Sorry to hijack this, but I have a PAS related query too, might be linked...

Since I had the Omega, the steering has been hard-ish, tight, etc...  Quite alot heavier than the steering on my GSi...

Finished work this morning, went to Asda as needed some bits & bobs...  steering was usual heavyness but definately assisted.

But, come out of Asda, start it up, the steering is like 100times lighter!  I did nothing to the car while I was in there, tyres are all as they were, not change, but it feels a completely different car!

Now either something was blocked or in Asda I had a 'popeye' muscle growth condition I dont know, but its too light now :o there is just no effort steering, I could probably blow on the steering wheel to turn it!

Any ideas??

According to the Omega sales brochure, only the V6 models and the 6 cylinder diesel had servotronic speed sensitive steering.  This is the same for pre and facelift.  However, I only have a brochure on the facelift with the "old" engines.

I'm still yet to fit the new ABS unit i got from RMCB so yes...

although I think a Flux Capacitor may prove more useful, as twice now the speedo has sprung into life at 88mph exact (according to my tomtom) then died 1mph+/-  ;D

The power steering needs a speed signal to know how much assistance to give, so if this isn't working properly, the speed sensitive steering won't work as expected....
