Guess who wrote off their car yesterday....
« on: 21 October 2006, 18:52:05 »

Well after an arguement with a wall at 40mph in a country lane last night it would seem the Hyundai Lantra is no more.....Guess that saves me MOT'ing it!  ;D

I was going through a lane to my girlfriends (out in the bloody sticks  ::)) and the road just looked like a long straight road. Then a crossroads is just suddenly upon me (no other cars present) and i instinctively brake, lock up and go ploughing towards a wall. Luckily i wasn't hurt and a policeman was just passing-by soon after the crash and called in afew others. Before i knew it they were saying i could be done for dangerous driving!!  :o But then they examined the road and realised the road markings were practically non-existant and the sign for the cross roads had been turned around.

Main thing is i'm ok i guess, although my necks hurting quite a bit. Funnily enough, two hours before writing it off i had bought myself an mr2  ;D I didn't drive it that night because i hadn't taken out my insurance on it yet although i really did want to drive it and show it to my girlfriend. Guess i made the right decision for once....

Cheers guys, i'll live to fight another day  ;)

I've always taken the 'main' roads to her house but she kept insisting the lanes are soooo much quicker, evidentally not  ::)

I think i was very lucky though to be honest and it's made me think more about how i drive and some of the stupid things i've done in the past. Although i was driving sensibly last night, but accidents do happen.

good to hear you seem to be OK and that's one less Hyundai on the roads  ;)

regarding not driving the MR2, it's funny about how things seem to work out sometimes (and nice when they do)

remember to sue yourself for whiplash  ;)  ;D

you could of course have used cadence braking instead of ABS .... but funnily enough I didn't think of that either about 10 years ago when I rolled a combo van on the M4 in rush hour traffic ...

Glad you're ok Tez :y

Sometimes I think we need such incidents, esp when wilder/younger to remind ourselves that we are not indestructable, and that driving is dangerous if not concentrating...

I used cadence braking once in a car without ABS on an icy road, in a real emergency. Believe it or not, I stopped safe and sound - I thought I was a goner at first!

Now - I won't own a car without ABS. It's really important in todays traffic/roads.

My 2000 25 has ABS as standard...   ...wonder if Rover/BMW were trying to cut costs on later ones?

Oddly, the crappy 51 plate focus didn't  >:(

Thanks again guys, the neck seems to be getting a bit better now  :)

When i think back to it i really wish i had used cadence braking, but it all happened so quickly (as they all say!). It's so stupid because i knew i didn't even need to brake, i just reacted. I'll get some pics up of the lantra and mr2 soon, still figuring out my new phone....

As for insurance, nope i was only TPFT  ::) I've only ever insured myself third party because i thought if my car got hit it wouldn't be my fault! Cocky i know lol but that's my first crash since passing 4 1/2 years ago. I also think ABS should be fitted as standard to all cars, especially with the condition of our roads and the kind of weather we get. I'm very surprised cars are still being built without it to be honest  ::)

Anyway, i'm ok and no one else was involved or injured so i've come out of it very well.....and yes i think it's probably done me some good as well! I think some people (including myself) can be over-confident and think they're indestructable. I'm glad it was only me in the car, if my girlfriend had been in the passenger seat i'd feel awefull, although she's suddenly got very nervous being in the car with me!  ::)

TBH i think we all need a crash (not a major one) now and then to keep our driving in check.....its very easy to become over confident......i crashed my merc a couple of years ago......just because of not double checking at pulling outa a junction, that all was clear..i pulled out into a car coming at 40mph!!..it was a case of i was in a hurry and a quick glance both ways...thought it was clear but it wasnt!!..now i always double check both ways are clear before pulling out...

Glad you are ok Terry and have learnt from it  :)

Sorry to hear about the bash matey. Glad you are Ok though. What you need is some top training to avoid this in the future. I can personally offer my services as a qualified ADI and PassPlus registered instructor. You may laugh, but I can teach you things that may just save your life.

Glad you're ok mate

Tip for the future (depends on space etc..) but if you brake and lock up don't just sit there, either get back on the gas to free up the locked wheels, or get your foot off the brake and steer towards where you'd rather go (e.g not into a wall!)..

Sounds to me as though you paniced and overbraked which is a common mistake to make.

Live and learn!

Good to hear you walked away from it...

I had an MR2 (The Mk1 - the proper one ;)) and that caught me out on a bend (wrong camber, greasy road).  Rear end of the car stepped out, I steer into it - even had enough time to tell the g/f that I was 'doing the best I bl**dy can!' before the inevitable happened - I hit a dry bit of road, the tyres gripped and we shot forwards through a hedge.  Would have been fine, but the hedge was merely camoflauge for a concrete post!  ;D

Calmed my driving down for at least, oh, the rest of the day (by which point I realised the car was bent, insurance would write it off - so what the hell - might as well have fun before I say goodbye to it!  ;D)

A crash isn't always a bad thing - and you might as well get it out your system on a Hyundai rather than an MR2!
