When that happened to me on my previous omega it was the hedgehog.Take care in getting the old one out,I snapped off the plastic retaining clips and had no way of holding the new unit in, it ended up located with a piece of wood placed carefully. It was very cold when I did this which maybe why I had the problem be prepared to lay on your back in the seat well.

I always recommend wearing a pair of clear safety glasses. Easily available for around £2 - £3. Try Screwfix or Toolstation or amazon etc. You're on your back with very limited room to manoeuvre and there is a risk of unexpected crap falling into your eyes. Especially as this is an old car.
