General Discussion Area / Photo editing software
« on: 10 October 2010, 17:27:07 »
Any recommendations for free or very cheap photo editing software?.

I currently have Kodak easyshare on my second hard drive but find it is a pain.

I just want something to crop, raise or lower brightness before attaching toEmail or getting printouts. Needs to be easy to use!

Had to laugh. Last night went out to get more cement powder. Was confronted by this in the middle of some S bends. No warnings in either direction. Just a huge pile of gravel, a water butt and a concrete mixer. Couldn't see any sacks of cement!

General Discussion Area / Anyone here affected by bank acct theft
« on: 29 September 2010, 11:18:34 »
On the BBC news this a.m. there was an infuriating (as ever) item about a gang of about 19 foreign people who had hacked into UK bank accounts and stolen about £6million pounds. They used some form of  Zeus Trojan to get passwords.

So many unanswered questions as ever with this sort of  dangle a titbit of info news item. I might have to watch Euronews tonight to get a fuller picture!

How many accounts were involved.?

One bank or loads?

Name of bank(s) involved?

How many other cyber scamming thefts of a similar magnitude are going on unreported?

At least i don't need to worry as the Varche UK £millions were spent years ago keeping the Omega roadworthy (ish) ;D ;D ;D

General Discussion Area / Popemobile Top speed
« on: 18 September 2010, 19:32:34 »
Non religous thread, just a comment on claimed performance.

Several times I have heard on TV that the current popemobile can do 160mph.

I believe it weighs 5 tons with all its armour. It must be some powerful engine to propel it at half that speed with its lack of aerodynamics. Maybe it was tested down a very steep hill ;D ;D ;D ;D

General Discussion Area / Tax man won't say sorry!
« on: 11 September 2010, 13:11:27 »
I see the tax man won't say sorry to the 6 million people affected by their incompetence.  More misery heaped on people already struggling.

It wasn't that long ago on this forum I would have been asking for someone to be sacked. Now they won't even say sorry! I sign of things to come? Big Society? or the European Business model perhaps. (Santander, Electric companies and so on)

Oh Dear..................

General Discussion Area / Speculate on wheat?
« on: 07 August 2010, 11:14:47 »
Here is the plan. Anything you normally buy that is made from wheat, go out and buy extra before the price goes up following the crop failure in Russia. Then when the price goes up you have saved money.

Here is a suggested list.

Beer
Vodka
Pasta
Pizzas
Bread
Hen food
Breakfast cereals
Meat
biscuits
noodles

If you have more money to spare then warehouse stuff and sell it to neighbours later.  ;D ;D

No doubt you have something in place but as I and no doubt many many others rely so much on the forum for technical stuff,  do you keep a secure off site backup of the help and maintenance guides etc in the event of the unthinkable!? :y

General Discussion Area / French take to the streets !
« on: 07 September 2010, 12:19:08 »
Don't you just love the way the French protest.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-11204528

Interesting they are thinking of raising the age you can retire from 60 to 62. with state pensiion remaining at 65.  Quite right in my view that they should protest.

I am underwhelmed by the prospect of being robbed of at least one if not more years of state pension having made my contributions. After tax that is about £75 a week for however many years just because of (bankers) greed.

I can't see us Brits protesting in the same way! ;D ;D

General Discussion Area / More suspicious goings on?
« on: 26 August 2010, 11:25:46 »
MI6 agent found dead in a holdall in his flat. Probably suicide like the Dr Kelly situation.

Asil Nadir coming back to face justice (or clear his name) - deal done with Turkey to help join EU? Procedings to be dismissed under a Tory government once they find who else is implicated?

The list goes on. Suspicious me, no. Just think what goes on in countries that are repressed. ;D ;D

General Discussion Area / Preparing for the little road trip
« on: 21 August 2010, 17:53:42 »
Well I will shortly be setting off on my little road trip. About a hundred miles or so, murderous heat, plenty of BIG hills. Off to Malaga Airport.

Preparation?

Oil checked
Water topped up as it is using especially without the air con on. HBV ?
Tyres kicked and pumped up in anticipation of extra bodies and their luggage.
Sandwiches
Cold drinks
Hat
Two bunches of grapes just picked off the vine
The latest Faithless CD
Sunglasses and spare pair for Mr Guardia Civil (cops)
More cold drinks in cooler box
Exorbitantly expensive Boiled sweets in a round tin
Stack of coins for parking meter.
Camera in case I see anything interesting

That should do it. Lets hope the gear selector switch or limp mode doesn't come back. :y

Wish me luck! ;D ;D ;D

General Discussion Area / Taxing and insuring a UK car questions
« on: 15 August 2010, 19:21:42 »
This might sound a daft question however I'll ask it anyway. Mrs Varche is back in England trying to help an old uncle and several other elderly relatives at the same time. The offer has always been there to "use his car" however it is off the road. he was told that he shouldn't drive some time ago but has been hoping that an eye operation will magically enable him to drive again. hmm age 91 , Don't think so.

Back to the car. We suspect the insurance has lapsed. maybe the tax, I am hoping the MOT hasn't expired! She will hunt out the docs tomorrow.

Any tips on getting it legal again would be appreciated.
e.g. if the tax has expired can you still get 6 months at a post office if you have a valid MOT and insurance cert.

do you have to buy a full years insurance and then cash it in after the dust has settled? It is a fairly old Ford Ka worth maybe £1000 to £1500 . TPFT ? If the insurance is still valid then getting her added might be easiest. Can she do that or does the uncle have to play a part. He is understandably confused to say the least.

General Discussion Area / Mackeral wars now with Iceland!
« on: 11 August 2010, 21:51:36 »
Interesting, if long article here ,on the Icelanders deciding to take three times the EU suggested quota much to Britains disgust. First they offed our money, then ashed our air space and now just extracting the fish.

Lets see the EU's teeth. I just hope they aren't milk ones.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/now-britain-and-iceland-go-to-war-over-the-mackerel-2049099.html

Loved the bit about the cod wars. "but Iceland laid down its trump card by threatening to close the Keflavík Nato base, crucial for defending the Atlantic Ocean from attack by the Soviet Union. Iceland finally got its way and, after 1 December 1976, Britain agreed its ships would not fish within 200 miles of Iceland. " Don't remember being told that at the time we appeared to give in!! :D :D
