Title: After Market Head units?
Post by: Dr_Syn on 08 April 2018, 20:59:52
Hi all, I'm just curious as to what aftermarket head units you guys are using?  I'm not after a banging sound system, I just looking for something with Bluetooth for my phone and either USB or memory card compatability for my music collection.  I know some form of interface for the steering wheel controls and I'm presuming you lose the radio display from the trip computer.  I just want an upgrade to the CCR 2006 in my car as the facia is loose on it after the previous owner attempted to remove it while there were grub screws in the removal holes.

Does anyone know what size the grub screws are btw?

Thanks.

I've fitted this one  :y

https://www.alpine.co.uk/p/Products/dab3842/cde-196dab

Note its single din so you will need a adapter plate to fit your omega.
Absolutely brilliant bit of kit.
Sound quality is first class and does everything you could ever ask imo.
Also, its NOT full of flashing lights and fancy graphics which can do your tits in  ;D

What head unit is currently fitted?

I retro-fitted bluetooth to my NCDC 2015, as I like the factory look and integrations, it allows me to stream music from my iPhone via Spotify.

You loose the CD changer, but that was buggered anyway and lasers shot.

most will need an adapter surround

In my Omega, I too use the standard HU, modified to take audio in...  ...and unlike Tunnie, impedence matched to gayDevices to get the volume/tone right...

...not that I ever listen to anything but the wireless!

Think you need to ask yourself, at £30 will it be any good? Can you buy a decent £30 phone? There is a reason Alpine and such command £350-£700......

I looked at youtube reviews , I wanted a back up camera, it does that , sound quality may not be great , dunno , not tried it , will lose the steering wheel controls too , but having driven a vauxhall carlton for 18 years ,that never had steering wheel audio controls , i'm not going to miss that feature  :P

the alternative being , i also have one of these knocking about
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/7-LCD-Monitor-Mirror-Car-Rear-View-Kit-Wireless-18-IR-Car-Reversing-Camera-UK/312063504818?hash=item48a86f31b2:g:xUgAAOxyFIFR~3~h (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/7-LCD-Monitor-Mirror-Car-Rear-View-Kit-Wireless-18-IR-Car-Reversing-Camera-UK/312063504818?hash=item48a86f31b2:g:xUgAAOxyFIFR~3~h)
so i could keep the original radio gram vauxhall fitted  :D
great design , can't eject the 4 CD cartridge whilst in PARK  ::)

If i went that route, i'd probably mount it to the screen sun visor ,rather than on ,or in place of ,the rv mirror

I think you are going to struggle with that level of kit, eBay stuff at this price will be Chinese tat that will probably last for 5 mins. The quality will be poor, the video will be poor, it won't react to your steering wheel like factory fit jobbies.

Fit bluetooth to your current factory fit radio and standard GM parking sensor retro fit, will be best combination and most reliable.

Factory fit cams tend to pop down/up when reverse is engaged, if always there it's going to get covered in road muck and be next to useless.  :-\

That last paragraph is tosh. Start to finish.

They are almost all fixed as part of the number plate illumination/bootlid handle assembly.

If you make a point of checking and cleaning the number plate and rear lights, what like you're legally obliged to, then they are fine positioned there ::)

VW pop up, from rear logo/boot handle. Merc C class I’ve seen pop down as well...

Naturally ;D

Fortunately most manufacturers have some level of common sense ;D

Remind me not to buy a Merc or a VW....

I had an older version of THIS (http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/head-units/double-din/kenwood-dpx7000u-double-din-tuner-dab-bt-cd-mp3-usb-aux-ipod-android-inc-dab-aerial) in my Omega

As for the reversing camera, the one one my 370z is fixed under the tailgate grab handle above the number plate.

Just merely giving my view on what I've seen of cars on the road, in the car park here, most I've seen are popup.

I ended up getting one of these:

https://www.pioneer-car.eu/eur/products/avh-x490dab/specifications

£150 for an ex display model from Halfrauds, it came complete and in its box :)

It looks like I might need to doctor the Vauxhall facia adaptor I bought though, the cage and the head unit surround are slightly too large for the adaptor.

You have the correct adaptor :y

Be sure to remove the original cage first... one screw at the back and release the plugs as you remove it.

I bought a universal double din cage and it now all fits perfectly.  I'll get the headunit installed after I've dealt with all the oily stuff.

I have an old Blaupunkt Pasadena DJ with 10 disc multi changer which is in beautiful condition. The trouble is to fit it I'd have to source new speakers and re-wire the system[as mine is Bose] which is acomplete faff however a replacement CCR2006 would -from prices I've seen-cost a stupidly high amount of money for what is potentially an 18yr old head unit.

Hi Tunnie.

Sorry to sound dim, but can you give me some idea how to achieve that? I have a CCR 2002 in my 2.6V6. I wouldn't know where to start, but I like the idea of Bluetooth for streaming my music. :y

Yes  :y

Mine has been working perfectly since I did that mod last year, wish I had done it years ago. I bought a bluetooth adaptor that is re-charagable, that plugs into that 3.5m jack.

Then pair my phone and it streams away fine, battery lasts around 2 weeks for me. Should really hard wire in power for it, but I'm not good enough to do that.

Sure yours is a 2002? Not a 2006? That mod works, because you steal the CD changer feed.
