I'm not up to doing the maths exactly, I'm not too well today (Ahhhhhhh), but I do around 17000 miles a year. If I get around 30mpg from a petrol and 45mpg from a diesel, that's a few shillings saved, even taking into account the 3-5p difference in price per litre (or 14 to 22p a gallon).

Trying doing 40k+!

Diesel is the only option (particularly with big exec lumps)

To answer my own question...

Of 1,957 brand new, 2.0+ diesels nationally on Autotrader:

577 are SUVs.
3 are less than £20k
52 are between £20 and 25k
300 are between £25 and 30k

Effectively zero choice in a market of 6,225.

They are still making diesel astra estates, 1.6, 135bhp, 0-60 in around 9 seconds, 50ish mpg. When mine has had it, probably in about three or four years, that is my next car sorted. 

This sounds most exciting. I'll bet you hardly sleep at night with mounting anticipation.

I think he's only planning on driving it at this stage.

Very nice. My neighbour has one the same as that on a 65 plate. He's had it from new and he's never mentioned having any grief with it. I've been looking myself recently and narrowed it down to a late Skoda Superb or a Transit Custom double cab.

Hard to believe that even a car like that doesn't come with a spare wheel. Lovely motor though.
