annoying drivers
« on: 17 November 2018, 14:41:49 »

I suppose we all have things that we find annoying about other drivers. I travel north on the A19 from York to Thirsk quite a bit & for its entirety its a single lane highway. lots of times there is a car doing 20mph under the permitted speed limit, not only that often they whenever a car comes towards them move over to the nearside & slow down even more. I wont mention the tractors.  :)

Are they the sort of driver that wears a hat in the car.....with a feather in the hatband?  ;D

I take A19 quite often in the summer, but I don't join until Jcn 48 of the A1. It's dual carriageway after that and always runs pretty quick. You've got to have your wits about you though, or you'll fly straight past the turn off for Thirsk, and end up in Middlesbrough.  :(

Its now getting rare to see  car driven well, by a competent and confident driver. The sights I see going to and from work, make me despair.
It ranges from the simply moronic to the downright dangerous, every day.

People who don't indicate on roundabouts really get my goat!  >:(

It's so common now that if I am approaching a roundabout and a car is coming the other way and not indicating, I stop to see where he/she/it is going, as you just can't assume they are going straight across.  :-\

How about the 'drivers' who push the brake pedal just enough to put the lights on but not slow down? Then, sometime later you have no indication that they've started slowing down.

And no, I don't drive up their arse to start with

My constant annoyance is the ones who pull out in front of me, causing me to slow down rather than drive into them. Then drive along in front of me at a much lower speed than I was doing before they pulled out.
If they aren't in any hurry why the fark did they pull out in the first place. If life was fair I should be allowed to shoot these people. :-\

The powers that be might as well make all nsl single carriageway roads maximum 40mph now, because no-one seems to do more than 40 on nsl roads these days.
Im sure most of them dont even know what the white sign with black line through it means.
I spend most of my time driving a 28 year old, very slow diesel car, pretty sensibly imo, yet constantly get held up by people in modern cars driving very slowly for no reason whatsoever.  >:(

I always found it easier to not discriminate by hating all other drivers. Without them on the roads getting in the way, causing traffic jams and I would able to park anywhere on the clear roads. :y :y :y So ban all vehicles & drivers except mine, TB's & Big Ron's as he will be transport minister in a TB government. :P :P :P :y :y :y

Driving home from work last night behind some nondescript newish hatchback. Single lane road, nsl, hatchback was being driven at 35mph on the straight bits and doing what most drivers do these days when the road ahead isn't straight any more. Instinctively braking, because that's what you must do if the road presents any kind of bend whatsoever.
The whole length of the road can be driven safely at 60mph, in a 28 year old car with 242,000 miles on the clock, and tyres that TB wouldn't have on his lawnmower, never mind his car.  ::)

How about the 'drivers' who push the brake pedal just enough to put the lights on but not slow down? Then, sometime later you have no indication that they've started slowing down.
.....

Could this be caused by modern cars cruise control 'with brake function'?  To maintain a constant speed the vehicle will sometimes back off to stay within the 3mph range of your chosen speed and I believe that the law dictates that it must show brake lights when doing so. Our Beemer certainly does this as I tested it after a conversation with TB some time back.

At 30mph around town in a 15 year old poverty spec Corsa(for example ;) )? It's a lack of confidence in the driver's abilities and a lack of knowledge what the car can actually do - not updating the braking distances in the highway code is a partial cause of this.

Likewise my E Class which could shed speed quite impressively using the cruise control switch and Teslas with max regen set... these will slow from 70 to 40* just by lifting off suddenly and Volvo trucks fitted with Ishift and VEB+ which will slow the truck from 56 to almost stopped, again by simply lifting off. Even when loaded 8)

New cars are becomingly increasingly crap to look at, but some of the driver aid tech is very impressive...

Chicken and egg... crap driving=fatalities=development of things to assist/protect against crap driving=less fatalities=less driving focus=crap driving...

If my Nan could drive safely, nay competently, (she couldn't (the dip switch is not a clutch) ::)), none of the safety systems we see today would need to have been invented. Unfortunately most of these have coincidentally made driving worse for the reasons above...

They have always been about. My grandfather, who was forced to quit driving in the early eighties, always complained about it being boring. There aren't any driver aids in an Austin 1300! He was bored because he wasn't concentrating enough on what he was doing. We were too scared to be bored :o

Couldn't agree more. Give new drivers a Lotus 7 with a Ford side valve engine and, only when they can drive that without messing up should they get any toys other than an oil pressure light. :y

Try driving a Bond E Microcar ..... not all even have a reverse gear  ;D ;D No toys at all .... brakes are err ... barely adequate)

(I've driven this car https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/e2/1956_Bond_Minicar_Mark_E_Prototype_Tourer.jpg/1280px-1956_Bond_Minicar_Mark_E_Prototype_Tourer.jpg )

But ....... are we going to remove all modern 'driver aids'? Are we going to remove ABS and all the other safety items?

Most of the gimmicky stuff is an unintended consequence of the safety stuff. Adaptive cruise and self parking are effectively a GPS map away from a self driving car.

Did you have to open the bonnet to kickstart the bike engine on that model?

Not on that particular car as it had a 'dynostart' ie you could re-start the engine backwards which would give 4 reverse gears  :o, but yes, some of the Bond Microcars retained the Villiers engine's kick start.  :y

I find that whe I go to Easingwold, the several crossroads make it interesting, as cars just pull out without looking.

I remember my driving instructor taking me up and down the A19 to Northallerton, many years ago.. I imagine it's a lot busier now!

Went to secondary school in Easingwold.. that's changed a lot, too, since I was there.

New cars are becomingly increasingly crap to look at, but some of the driver aid tech is very impressive...
.

Don't just lift off on a damp road, !!!!!!!!!! With veb on 3.....
;D or :o

But agreed, that has the potential to end very badly...
