Air Conditioning Problem
« on: 03 September 2006, 14:39:35 »

Not me, but the brother of a neighbour has an R reg elite, neither have a computer, so can't get onto this web site.

The problem, as I understand it is, the air conditioning stopped working, he took it somewhere to have it checked and was told the compressor had packed up.

Was quoted £350 for a new compressor + fitting.

Does this sound resonable?

Not when you could pick one up from a scrappies, fit it yourself, then take it for a recharge.  ::)

How much would you expect to pay for one at a scrappies?

How difficult would it be to fit on a 3.0ltr V6 elite?

I think all compressors are the same? maybe a differnce between facelift & pre.

Maybe get onto McB see if still has the one from the stripped MV6. - Could also try eBay for breaking Omegas and ask for the compressor.

Depending on the actual size of the compressor, I could get one for a tenner, but it depends how easily it can be removed from a scrappy car. Getting underneath the car is very difficult, if not impossible.

What was done to come to this diagnosis?
Did they check refrigerant pressures?
Is the compressor seized? or noisy
Did they definately say compressor or could it have been condenser?

I don't think it's unreasonable for a garage charge, regass alone costs £80-£100 (in London), and given that the garage probably allocated two hours for the job it's another £100 or so, which does not leave much for the actaul part...

But did they diagnose the problem properly - is it  really the compressor?

Will there not be other last minute expensive things to replace - 'sorry gov, you condensor needs doing as well'?

And finally is it a new compressor, reconditioned, or second-hand?

I really don't know the answers to all your questions, I've never seen the car.

Thanks for your interest guys. [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

As I said, when I see my neigbour next, I will pass the info on, and he can tell his brother.
