General Discussion Area / Yet another energy saving con
« on: 06 March 2011, 16:03:32 »
Old fashioned lightbulbs work quite fine for me but along came the hype of energy saving bulbs.

So I invested heavily and bought 6 for use in outside wall lights and three spares as no two lights ever seem to be the same shape or light quality. Only had them about a year and one didn't light. Assumed it must be a wiring fault. No it was a failed bulb. Covered by guarantee yes but who keeps the receipts? The others are going to have to last 10 years to pay back. They don't illuminate immediately and the quality of the light is poor power for power.

On top of that technically   you are supposed to not throw the failed energy saving bulbs in the bin but drive to a disposal centre with them! (contain mercury?) How much energy does that consume? >:(

I love the diversity of Britain, from the remote wildernesses to the choked conurbations. From the dialect of Yorkshire to the rhyming slang of the Cockneys. However the folk should all have the same taxation, Healthcare and so on. Part of being in Great Britain.

I don't like the ever creeping separation of the Welsh and the Scottish in particular from the English. Today the Welsh have voted Yes for more powers on local matters including Health. At the same time prescription charges are going UP in England whilst free in Scotland.

Why oh why?

General Discussion Area / National speed limits to be reduced?
« on: 26 February 2011, 15:42:55 »
Well the Spanish have just announced that the national speed limit will be reduced from 120km to 110km from 7th March in an effort to save fuel and the help the ongoing economic crisis which has hit really hard here (20% unemployed nationally).

Shades of the 70'S ?

Will other European countries do the same? 70mph down to 60mph in Britain?

General Discussion Area / Anyone like or got any old books?
« on: 22 February 2011, 19:22:31 »
My favourite is Animals' treatment first aid. The Elliman EFA Book (covers Horses, dogs, birds and cattle) Published in 1900. Here is an extract  http://www.newrider.com/Library/How_it_Was/horse_care.html. Under Cattle there is a lovely section on "driving" The morning is the best time, water is the chief requirement on the road as the exertion is unusual and extra water is wanted.

I am also reading a totally unPC book My sporting Memories published 1922  (forty years with gun and notebook by major general nigel woodyatt. That is all about shooting any and many big game animals in India. Mostly man eating tigers!!

Anyone else love old books? We are the last generation that will as the Internet and ebooks will rule from now on. :'(

Well my Mum and Dad's friends out there are OK.

Looking on TV , Seems like a lot of the buildings that are recent don't look too earthquake proof. Shame about the cathedral.

General Discussion Area / SCARY TERMS and CONDITIONS
« on: 20 February 2011, 22:22:55 »
Here is a section of a company that does PSTN forwarding VOIP 's T and C's relating to termination.

looks promising but to register , you have to agree to their Terms and Conditions. I reproduce below just one of the clauses - it's worth reading (I've highlighted certain bits!)

TERMINATION

DID Logic maintains a clearly defined termination policy. Any behavior that can be interpreted as insulting, rude, vulgar, desecrating, or showing disrespect will be followed by an instant account termination and a lifetime IP address ban. Examples of such behavior include, but are not limited to, using foul language in email or telephone correspondence, or posting false, misleading or unfair statements related to DID Logic anywhere on the public Internet. DID Logic lacks the resources and the intention to enter into any public arguments due to our focus on service quality and assistance to legitimate customers. Any behavior that can be interpreted as frivolous will result in instant account termination and a lifetime IP address ban. The "frivolous" behavior includes, but not limited to, making repetitive requests regarding the same issue that has been already addressed, using all capital letters in the email subject, threatening DID Logic staff, trying to act scandalous and attempting to show disrespect. The verb forms “trying to” and “attempting to” are used because there is no option to remain in continuous state of being scandalous or disrespectful while simultaneously being a DID Logic user; you will be immediately terminated after you attempt to engage in this behavior. There is no refund, full or partial, after account termination. In the event of account termination, you are no longer subject to all other sections of Terms and Conditions except this section ("Termination"). We may or may not refer you to this specific section of Terms of Service after termination has occurred, or answer any email or telephone calls made by you, or otherwise respond to your attempts to make contact. You agree to read this entire agreement carefully, and you agree to be bound by all sections of this Agreement including the "Termination" section. DID Logic is designed to offer the best VOIP service technically attainable on our planet as of early 21st century. Our vendors are carefully selected from only the best qualifying carriers and our engineers dedicate a significant portion of their lives to ensure DID Logic operates flawlessly. We do not provide any services not mentioned in this Agreement. Psychological counseling, life advice, casual chat and other forms of personal services are not offered. You will be terminated if you approach us with any of such requests. You will be terminated if we determine you may be presently seeking such services, or that you may be potentially inclined to seek such services in future. You will be terminated if we determine, at our sole discretion, that you are attempting to register for purposes of creating negative publicity through usage of information made available to you after the registration. Due to the limited resources and our complete and unconditional dedication to maintain service quality, DID Logic staff will not tolerate abuse, behavior related to entertaining yourself with the free trials, and attempts to start conversations about anything unrelated to the technical nature of the service. If you start dispute(s) with our payment agents and we determine the nature of such dispute(s) to be frivolous, immediate termination will follow. If you provide questionable identification copies, or passport copies clearly produced using Google image search or imaged that were altered using a graphic editor, you will be terminated. If you create multiple accounts that clearly belong to the same person, you will be terminated.

Wow! They won't be getting any business from me!  If anyone would like to see the full document, it's at: https://didlogic.com/terms

They won't need a call centre just one "Arnie" to do the terminations ;D ;D ;D

General Discussion Area / Acer Aspire laptop card question
« on: 20 February 2011, 17:47:59 »
Mrs Varche is using an Acer Aspire laptop in England right now.. She is accessing the Internet via BTFon. As there isn't a wired connection I assume the laptop has some form of wireless comms. Any idea what?

Could a bog standard PC tower have a card fitted to share the Internet with the laptop acting as the hub. Both run XP? If so what card would be needed?

General Discussion Area / Inflation, average earnings, Merv King
« on: 16 February 2011, 22:11:06 »
I wonder if Mervyn Kings' average earnings have kept going down these last five years or is that just the drones that have suffered that?

I remember inflation not being a bad thing when I was I was younger. Mind you I had a job through it.

The situation is as bad here in Spain. Apart from fuel costs, everyone here raises their prices as some sort of right every start of a new year. The small loaf of bread we used to buy at 60 cents is now "on offer "at 65cents reduced from 70 cents. Clever marketing rip off.

General Discussion Area / 3g mobile phone/skype advice please?
« on: 08 February 2011, 08:54:39 »
We need a mobile for use In England when we go back to England for relative visits. We have managed OK in Spain without one for five years  and now know nothing about them but....

A week ago both my mother and mother in law came down with a flu/sickness bug with endless vomitting. My mum despite being the healthiest 80 year old you have ever seen is now in hospital and my older dad is vaguely managing. The MIL had her eldest daughter travel over .They both have it bad.

Can you point me at a shop which would provide on Wed or Thurs:

Small initial outlay only no contract e.g. £20-£30
pay as you go for very occasional calls
UK 3g capability for Skype to Skype In / out
next weeks lottery numbers (optional)

Thanks in anticipation

General Discussion Area / Forest sale
« on: 05 February 2011, 09:11:26 »
I vote no for a number of reasons. The main one being "haven't we learnt yet that selling the family silver once (often to Johnny Foreigner) just doesn't work"

plenty in the press e.g. http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2010/oct/29/uk-government-forest-sell-off
