General Discussion Area / Good news for Opti
« on: 05 July 2019, 08:10:24 »
Today Range Rover Jaguar are to announced a huge investment of hundreds of millions of pounds in building their cars in electric form:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-48875406

Opti will be still able to buy a Jag for hopefully many years to come  8) 8)

2040 is a long time away, but I feel sure the commercial sector will be doubling their efforts to meet the new challenges of going electric, and the Government will have to respond to fully aid this process - once Brexit is out of the way!

Do not forget the railways went from 125 miles in 1830 to over 10,000 miles in 1860, and that involved massive engineering with simple tools and brut force. So the project to electrify our vehicles with all the technology, developing fast, and create the infrastructure required within the next 21 years is more than possible.

The revolution has already started, and for our young it will be a reality and they will laugh at us and our internal combustion engines :D ;)

General Discussion Area / BBC Years and Years
« on: 04 July 2019, 16:17:38 »
Well, wow!!

At last I have managed to view the whole of the Years and Years BBC drama the some good person on here suggested I do.  So glad I have!! 8) 8)

What a thought provoking piece of drama, that covered for me reminders of history, along with political philosophy that covers how mankind is in so many respects, and why events have transpired in history, whilst being a very real warning of what could happen in the future, and maybe not the distant future.

It touched on the philosophy of Plato, through to my favourite, Hobbes, and then Marx, with the theories contained within the two formers works especially, The Republic and Leviathan, made contact with.  It touched on the history of the Third Reich and the distorted theories of Friedrich Nietzsche, with some Machiavellianism thrown in, and the counter-factual history of if those Nazi bastards had won. It reflected back to the French Revolution, and the ultimate Ace we, the free people of our very being, our true human spirit, hold, the one of up-rising against oppression, of over-powering evil with good, with the latter always the winner, although that may take considerable time and much cost.

Although, as this is a car forum, I would take issue with the producers that they failed to progress the number plates and types of car beyond our current year (I am always looking for the out of period features in historical period dramas), it was a superb effort which should give us much food for much thought, and maybe even modify how we might act in future? 8) 8) 8) :y

General Car Chat / Omega Ownership Costs
« on: 29 June 2019, 17:02:59 »
Well I purchased my Omega on the 1st July 2013, so 6 years ago Monday, at 55,646 miles, now 77,000.

Including all costs to purchase and maintain her, with no expense spared, my outlay has now reached £17,009.16 after purchasing the Supertrol Anti Rust Fluid.

Yes, keeping her going from purchase has cost, but that is 6 years of motoring in a car I love, feel safe in, and does everything I want in comfort (climate control this morning was oh so good!! :D :D :D) If I had bought a Merc, and I was tempted in 2013, how much would that have cost in depreciation and maintenance costs?

No, I am happy and that is all I want now! :D :D :P ;)

General Discussion Area / BT Broadband Fight
« on: 29 June 2019, 16:23:49 »
I have, in the past with my husband and 'the business' been with BT since 1973.  They have been very good as far as I am concerned with straightforward telephone services.

But recently I have become unhappy with my Broadband speed after originally going from the standard package years ago, through to Affinity fibre, then to Superfast Fibre 1 Unlimited.  I have been checking my speed a lot recently after my other PC / iPad issues, with it seeming to slow down, and I came out two weeks ago with a download speed, with the BT test, of 35.4 Mb/s.

When I was offered on my log in page a chance to upgrade to Superfast Fibre Plus with an "up to" 79 MB/s speed I, like the naive person I am at times on these IT things, thought that will do me.

Two weeks ago I upgraded online and within 24 hours I was informed it was all set up.  Then last Monday I checked my speed; still 35.4 Mb/s.

I then went into "bring the supplier to book mode", and complained.  Eventually getting through to a person who could help me, the line was checked at their end, with her stating there was a fault in the line / green box "in the street".  Within two hours BT / Openreach contacted me to make an appointment to come and check my lines INSIDE MY HOME;  I went along with it!

Tuesday finds an engineer inside my home checking my line and stating "everything is fine, you cannot expect higher speeds on your line ; in fact you have not been upgraded to the new package"  !!!!!! :o :o :o

The engineer got an ear bashing from me about what 'centre' had told me, and what the hell was any check on my internal wiring to do with a fault "in the street?!!"

After controlling my emotions, the following morning I eventually got through to a few BT 'agents' who gave me different stories of what was happening, with one cutting me off.  I checked my speed again and it had gone DOWN to 32.7 Mb/s!!!! I was actually told that I was "lucky" to get over 25 Mb/s on my line (I am within 3/4 mile from their main town exchange)!! They also kept on repeating the "added benefits" of my new BB package.  I made it clear they mattered not, it was the principle of being sold something as a key feature of the package, taking my money, and not being able to deliver anything like the speed being advertised.

After this I then 'blew' and made contact with the account closure department and ripped them apart stating very clearly that "I have been conned by false advertising and seeking financial gain by that practice".  You are advertising speeds for the Superfast Fibre Plus that cannot be attained even by half (Some of the BT staff, and Openreach engineer, eventually, when pushed, even admitted to that fact and could understand my point of view).  The agent for the account closure department was good, and she started a process to resolve all issues as much as possible.  After another 40 minutes on the phone they agreed to a credit for all the inconvenience and a failure to meet my expectations.  "Please could I stay with BT?"  I said I will see, but I at least would degrade to my previous Broadband package.  I left it with them.

That afternoon I checked my speed again and it had, at last gone UP to 37.9 MB/s the best I have ever seen.  I rang BT back up and told them I will keep to the new package on the understanding that the higher speed will be maintained, with them highlighting the new package will guarantee a £20 refund for every day the speed stays below 25 Mb/s (!!!!!)

Anyway, today a £30 credit has been applied to my account, but it has not stopped me from reporting BT to Ofcom about alleged "False Advertising to gain commercial advantage and financial reward".  As I told many of the BT staff, in retailing if we tried to sell a product that we knew could not meet the specifications advertised and the requirements of the customer, with additional payment being taken, then we risked prosecution.  This should apply to BT and all these telecommunication companies that promise the consumer the Earth when knowingly not being able to provide that level of service! >:( >:(

General Discussion Area / Trump Shows Maturity!
« on: 22 June 2019, 14:26:00 »
Well, now one seems to have mentioned it (or am I missing another thread again!!), but Trump has pulled back from war with Iran, for the time being!

He stopped military action, just 10 minutes before it was to commence, against 3 Iranian targets that, in his words would "kill 150" Iranians.  This he said was "not proportionate" for the Iranian downing of a US military drone (worth $130m).  Exactly right!

What a realistic, pragmatic and mature approach Trump has taken that puts him 'up there' as a US President who history may well rate as one who made a difference for his Nation and the World, just as much as Kennedy, or before that, Roosevelt did. Kennedy stopped a certain Nuclear conflict over Cuba at the 11th hour; Roosevelt held back from taking his nation to join a war with Nazi Germany in the hope of peace and to satisfy home isolationist policies, but then on 8th December 1941 took the decision to declare war on Japan which developed into a war with Germany and so inevitably give us all the freedoms we enjoy today. Both these strong men held back until they knew it was right to make their history changing decisions. Trump has just done that!

He stopped at the 11th hour an action that would have resulted in very rapid tit for tat escalation of the already tense political and military  actions witnessed already between the US and Iran. For all his bombastic and very direct forceful rhetoric he showed leadership of great quality, as no doubt the hawkes within the White House and Pentagon wanted to strike Iran hard.

What he has shown, so far and long may it continue, rather supports my thoughts on him that he has taken on the responsibilities of leading the most powerful democracy on Earth with a military to match and has matured as a President, away from his early vocal campaign, to make history.

I know others will disagree, but what is, is, and today and yesterday we have enjoyed peace away from what would have been, and still could be, war that could quickly involve many countries ;)

General Discussion Area / MH17 Charges
« on: 19 June 2019, 16:03:52 »
The BBC has announced that a Dutch court has issued international arrest warrants after three Russians and a Ukrainian have been charged with bringing a missile into the area in eastern Ukraine and with murdering 298 passengers and crew on board MH17.

The Dutch-led joint investigation team (JIT) named the men as Igor Girkin, Sergei Dubinsky and Oleg Pulatov from Russia, as well as Ukrainian Leonid Kharchenko.

The JIT, which is seeking to try the suspects under Dutch law, had previously said it had a "long list" of persons of interest and appealed again for witnesses as the investigation continues.

Well it is something, but we know Putin will not let those Russian men go to any trial as it is against his countries law, apparently!

Some of the relatives are stating that at least the investigation has now actually named who could have been responsible for all the deaths, including 90 children, as they realistically cannot expect them to attend court.

I reckon there is as much chance of sending those found guilty to prison as there is in finding MH370! >:( >:(

General Discussion Area / Petrol Price Shock
« on: 18 June 2019, 11:42:00 »
With all that has been going on between the USA and Iran, with tankers bombed (as per the other threads) and World oil prices shooting up.......................

This morning at Sainsbury's, where the price has been up to 131.9 in recent weeks, it was 124.9, down 3p per litre on what it was just a few days ago!

Great, but what is going on now?  ??? ??? :D :D ;)

Of course I filled up the tank to the brim in the gamble that price cannot last ;D ;D

General Discussion Area / Oil Tankers Bombed - Iran vs USA
« on: 13 June 2019, 14:53:17 »
Today's news about the suspected bombing of two oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman is very disturbing.

It has been on the news today about the bombing of two oil tankers and it is already being strongly suggested by Washington that Iranian sponsored terrorists are responsible. If this is true then we are possibly on the verge of war that has been bubbling for some time with the USA strongly suggesting Iran, a known sponsor of terrorism, and posing a new, current, escalating trend to "attack" the USA is now taking that one stage further.  Trump has apparently stated we do not want conflict, but if we have to we will take action.

Trump will, strangely, be the man to face that down. He is unpredictable enough, but strong enough, to do what a US President should do if the United States of America is threatened, as it is in effect being from Iran.  Weak USA Presidents are not required now!

This is a very dangerous situation, and could be a very costly one in major ways, but also the slight matter of oil prices that, it is already being reported, have spiked already!

Fill up yer tanks, and batten down the hatches!  This obviously will be no joke if the situation is allowed to escallate beyond what has transpired already in diplomatic terms between the USA and Iran.  Remember, US battle groups are already assembled in great numbers in the Gulf. :( :(

I am not one to usually overreact over world politics and 'developments' involving the military, but............................. :o :o

General Discussion Area / HERMES
« on: 12 June 2019, 21:04:08 »
I ordered three HDMI cables from Amazon, which I usually use with no problems whatsoever, and that I can say after ordering from them since 2008.

Yesterday I waited in all day as the Amazon Tracking informed me the order was out for delivery by...HERMES.  I kept myself busy, but by 1930 hours there was no sign of the delivery. Checked the order Tracking and it stated HERMES was "sorry" but the order would not be delivered "today; it should be delivered between the 12th (today) and the 21st of June!!!!

I was not happy and got in touch with Amazon's Customer Services Department, via an initial system email asking them to contact me by telephone. To be fair the call back was instant, and I ended up talking to a very helpful, professional and well trained Customer Care operative. Let rip about the awful service from their contracted courier, HERMES, infamous for failing in NOT delivering parcels. She immediately agreed to give me a refund of the delivery charges and £5 discount on any future orders from Amazon, whilst communicating my complaint to another team to deal with HERMES.

This morning I checked with the Amazon site on any latest news about the delivery. Tracking stated that the item had been "Delivered" at 8:13pM on Tueday!!!

I blew my top, recovered, and went into professional mode and another conversation with Amazon.  From stating the fact that the Tracking info had gone from "it won't be delivered until to between the 12th-21st" to "delivered", when it had not and in fact at that claimed time I had been talking to their colleague about the problems, all recorded. I gave some experienced retailers advice on the monsters HERMES are, how they have a very bad online and media reputation doing what they have done to me, and how the Amazon business would lose customers, such as me, by using such a company who lies and fails to give the retailers customers excellent Customer Care. I stated I can go anywhere locally, to all the national major retailers, and purchase what Amazon, by default, have failed to deliver, but HERMES do not worry themselves about that! I requested that the order be cancelled, all monies be refunded, and stated I would not use Amazon again. At this the operative responded in the same professional way as before and did what I asked, but also agreed to arrange a £10 discount on any future orders if I gave Amazon another chance.

After that call the previous Customer Care, highly professional lady operative phoned me and asked what had happened; had the order been delivered as suggested by HERMES. I then gave her full professional advice on what should be fed back to her managers about THAT company and their appalling record. I repeated that courier could destroy any retail business if their contract was not terminated. She admitted I was far from being "not the first to complain about that company, and she would make a special effort to give my feedback to the management. I have also stipulated that I would not place an order if HERMES is the courier, a note of which has been placed on my account.

How that company keep going I shall not know, but, if, just if, my communications with Amazon help to terminate their contract with that company and stop others going through all the hassle, then that will be great!

In the meantime I have purchased my HDMI leads from B&Q, and also have a £15 discount for my next purchase with Amazon.

Sorry for the long winded post, but I needed to let as many know as possible, who do not know already, how they should avoid using that courier ;)

General Discussion Area / Bluetooth Wireless Dongle
« on: 09 June 2019, 15:30:25 »
I need help please from those on here advanced in IT matters!

I have tried to link my Windows 8, upgraded to 10, desktop PC via a Bluetooth Wireless USB dongle to a Panasonic sound bar.  My laptop is fully paired with the sound bar, and until the previous Bluetooth dongle stopped working when I upgraded to Windows 10, the PC was.

I first tried an apparent all singing all dancing dongle which just gave me a "Driver Error" on the Control Panel screen. I got another one of those, only to have a repeat of that.  I looked up reviews online and others had had problems connecting to Windows 10 and just sent their dongle back.

Two days ago I tried again, via Amazon, with a USB BLUETOOTH BT WIRELESS CSR 4.0 DONGLE, with drivers, and meant to be "Plug &Play" for Windows 7/8/10.  I have again been having to swear out loud and throw things around my front room as, after repeatedly installing, then uninstalling, only to do that again and again (!!!!) I arrive at the same point.

My PC has recognised my Panasonic Sound bar, being shown as successfully connected; it is fully linked. BUT, on the Control Panel screen the Sound bar is shown with "connect" and disconnect" 'buttons, both in grey mode, so not reacting to my constant clicking onto them!!  When I check the link on the dongles details the sound bar, or more precisely speaker, is shown as connected, but when I click on that it displays a "A2DP (sink) device and that prompts me to "connect" it. BUT, again, frustration, as the system after trying to connect just gives me the message "Device failed to respond"!!!!

I have sent an email to the supplier asking for help, but I have noted many cases online where the A2DP (sink) thingy gives people real hassles, so I am not holding my breadth!

As a side issue my iTunes app works fine when just confined to my PC speakers, but is giving me a message of "iTunes detects incompatible Bluetooth software on your computer" and may not work correctly!!  (Once more I have noted online comments that this is not an unusual problem).

So, have any of you simple answers of what is wrong and how I can fix it??  (I have again gone through pages of online Windows system advice, via Bing until I feel sick with the complexity of what I should do - usually I end up with thinking of suicide as a simpler option!!

OR, should I just return this dongle as well?  If so, what can you good guys, hopefully sympathetic for my mental health, suggest as a "good" and easy dongle to use with Windows 10?

I have spent days on this issues, but i want my iTunes being played from my PC through to the Sound bar system eventually!

Many thanks in advance :-* :-* :-* ;)

No one has mentioned it yet, but Ford are set to close their Bridgend engine plant in 2020, after 40 years in service.

Sign of the times and things to come, with electric engines now firmly on the scene?

1700 jobs are going :'( :'(
