Title: Cam shaft pulleys

is it possible to put the camshaft pulleys on upside down because of the keyways?
If it is how can tell which is the right way (ps they were not marked when taken off)?
Is the y32se  engine a safe engine?

If by "safe engine" you mean valves and pistons not having a coming together then I don't believe any of the V6s are "safe".Others more knowing will no doubt be along shortly.

No, The only safe Omega engine was the rare 2.0 8v

The pulleys are paired and can be fitted incorrectly.

If you look at the slot for the where the locate on the key you will note a number (1 through to 4).

You have to match the correct numbered slot to the correct cam (cams are 1 through to 4 working left to right when viewed from the front)

the pulleys are on the right cams but can they be rotated through 180 degrees? causing a timing problem

Never had the cam sprockets off I can't say for sure,however for what it's worth according to Haynes each sprocket has two locating pin cutouts and two timing marks.When refitting sprockets it's vital that the sprocket locating pin[there's two locating cutouts but only one pin per sprocket]is located in the correct slot and the correct timing mark is used.The pictures in Haynes seem to show that sprocket 1 aligned with correct timing mark the locating slot is not far off vertical with the pin in the top slot.Sprocket 2 the slot should be [about quarter to three with the pin in the left hand slot.Sprocket 3 slot about twenty to two with the pin in the lower slot.sprocket 4 again near vertical with the pin in the top slot.Note these are my estimates of slot positions from the pictures[but I don't think I'm so far out as you wouldn't be able to use you own judgement as to exact orientation of the slots]The washer and sprocket retaining bolt then covers these slots/pins.HTH

Yep, the cams are numbered 1 to 4 from left to right as you look at the front of the engine.

The sprocket keyways are identified on the sprocket according to this numbering. You also have to use the correct timing mark on the sprocket. Again, this is identified by the number 1..4.

If you've got it wrong, turn the crankshaft back to 60 degrees BTDC on number 1, as this is a "safe" position, then check and, if necessarily reposition each of the cams until they are correct. Then turn the crank back up to TDC, lock the tool against the water pump and refit the belt.

If the cams are in the correct position, timed up with the marks on the back plate, and No1 pulley to the mark,,, then No.
