Title: air con fault finding
Post by: annihilator on 07 June 2018, 10:37:02
Apologies if there is a gude but have searched and couldn't find it.
Trying to sort the air con on my '97 v6 Tourer when I press the snowflake button I get a quiet whirring sound from in the dash (like 1st speed on main fan switch) but the yellow tell tale doesn't light up.There's no sign of life from the compressor and the air recirc works fine.It probably needs gassing up at least and if it does have no pressure in the system will that prevent the compressor from operating.

Thanks John

As it works, swap it (snowflake) with the recirc switch and retry :y

It could simply be a duff switch, but it will at least rule it out...

Also bridging the terminals on the relevant relay under the bonnet will engage the compressor if the switch swap doesn't work, but bear in mind that if low/no gas, then don't leave it bridged... Also if one of the fan or pressure switches is faulty then the aircon shouldn't switch on :y

IIRC if no gas the compressor clutch will not engage. :-\

Correct. :y

Unless you bridge the relay ;) for testing purposes of course...

Yes.

I hope you've got Aircon were you are... ;) :y

The aircon in the transfer bus appears to be working well 8)  :D

I was told once, and have experienced it personally, that if you run around too long without air con gas in the system it buggers up the compressor

Twice over the years that seems to have been the case with mine anyway.  All down to a lack of lubricant apparently;) ;)

Sorry DG, but in what post do you specifically mention the compressor being buggered when run with no gas?

Unless you are a total dunce, the following is pretty clear...

"Also bridging the terminals on the relevant relay under the bonnet will engage the compressor if the switch swap doesn't work, but bear in mind that if low/no gas, then don't leave it bridged..."

Have started drinking, so I will leave that there. As should you :-*

bridging the pressure switch is for diagnosis, NOT as a repair.

As suggested by my learned colleague  I tried another switch although couldn't use the recirc as they all have little pegs on the back so only fit in the correct location but had a correct spare which made no difference.I then bridged the connection

and it looks promising as when ignition was switched on front fans sprang into life and when snowflake switch was used the compressor did it's thing (still no telltale) so will get it gassed and providing all else is well jobs a good'un.

Cheers John  :y
