For a few days I have suspected that my self levelling suspension isn't working. It used to hiss from the rear shocker area with the engine running and doesn't now. I "tested" it as per the book of lies today and it didn't fail the test. The ref point on the bumper was 5 cm lower with a large rock, 2 gallons of water in a large bucket, 25 kilo bag of cement. Both measurements were done handbrake off, start car wait 20 or so seconds then apply handbrake and measure.

Any suggestions as to where to start looking, if indeed I need to? What goes on the system? compressor, sensor?

Omega General Help / Re: Auto box questions - throwing it out there
« on: 11 December 2008, 22:53:41 »
That sounds like thrust washer problems.

You haven't said how many miles the box has done - 120k ? perchance.

You could try a change of fluid.

If you do decide to get another gearbox you will need someone else to help you with the job.

It might sound a bit perverse  but it might be easier to flog your car in an honest ad and buy another unless the rest is in A1 condition.

Omega General Help / V6 oil leak passenger side- now fixed
« on: 10 December 2008, 09:11:47 »
When the car last ran it had a "smoke film cloud" of oil from under the car. That was when the gearbox packed up and may have been from the gearbox itself.

I have the exhausts off and there is oil on the half inch metal pipe above the oil filter that goes into a union near the filter. Is that a known leaking place? perhaps that is where oil from the rear seal of the passenger side cam cover leaks?

When it was last running the car had drops of oil on those two torx bolts on the very bottom of the bellhousing but I can't feel any oil inside the bellhousing..

Gearbox change today!

Omega General Help / Re: V6 2.6 Parts and Maintenance advice needed
« on: 04 December 2008, 11:56:25 »
Welcome to the forum.

I would think the best approach would be to look at the service history of your car (if any) and then have a good look at the car.

If you have a look on the forum general help section and also in the maintenance guides then you will see the areas that give trouble on the Omega V6.

If money is no object you could for example include front wishbones, drop links, rear subframe bushes, oil cooler, DIS pack, crank and cam sensors.

However if money is an issue, then it might be best to come up with a to do list.

e.g. clean breathers, Opel oil change and filter. Cambelt and water pump (unless it was done at the last cambelt change).

Where I live Opel dealers are all quite some distance away and never have the parts you need available as V6 omegas aren't common here. I find that there are plenty of suppliers in the UK prepared to ship abroad. www.ebay.co.uk is a good source. Again if you look at the postings on the forum and in the maintenance guides you will see what items are recommended as only Opel dealer purchase (brake discs for e.g.) and what are acceptable as pattern parts.

With the current rate of exchange UK pound to other currencies it might just work out cheaper getting stuff from an Opel dealer somewhere on the African continent!

hope that helps

Omega General Help / Rattling cat heat shield on V6 exhaust
« on: 01 December 2008, 11:18:02 »
It isn't affecting the performance of the car but is irritating.

I seem to remember reading on the forum that a jubilee clip would do the job. On mine I can't see that that would work as rust has eaten away the rear end of the heat shield a bit , better might be a metal object  wedged inside.

Anybody else had this problem and what did you do please?

The vacuum lines are small (about eigth inch diameter ) black plastic tubesrunning all over the engine bay. They are connected up to switches etc by short(maybe inch or so long bits of rubber tube about quarter inch in diameter).

When checking run your fingers along the length looking for chafes (holes from rubbing against something for the last ten years). Also check they are actually connected at each end and the rubber connector itself is not split underneath where you can't see it.

It is very easy for one to become disconnected following engine bay work.

Omega General Help / Re: Multi-ram Actuator
« on: 16 November 2008, 11:45:18 »
I have had a poor performance issue with my car for quite a long time. I had checked and rechecked the multitude of vac pipes and connectors. I even replaced some.

Two days ago I checked them all again and found a split under the U shaped rubber pipe from the rear multiram to the electrical connection. I am fairly convinced that is what has been causing my troubles but haven't been able to test it as the gearbox is Kaput.

It might be worth double checking yours.

Omega General Help / Re: Windscreen Washer Jets
« on: 24 November 2008, 17:28:18 »
Good luck.

I had the same problem with mine being gunked up on one side. Tried pin, blowing through etc. Thought it would be simple to take off. Wrong. Ended up cutting the plastic pipe just before it goes over the bonnet nozzle fitment. Flushed the pipe out a lot. Got another jet from a car breaker on the forum and there was enough spare plastic tubing left to make a new connection. Now works really well.

Omega General Help / Re: Transmission Oil. To renew or not to renew?
« on: 23 November 2008, 12:46:38 »
Definitely change it.

There is plenty of info on here about how to do it, where to get the gaskets and filter from and how to refill.

far far better than having a failure or a dropping off of performance.

Omega General Help / Spare V6 crank sensor pre install suggestion.
« on: 12 November 2008, 17:24:41 »

The camshaft sensors on the V6 seem prone to go at any mileage and the consensus is to carry a spare.

This is only a suggestion. Would it be possible to "pre install" one carefully routed away from heat and then just swap over the ends when the connected one gives up!!? Maybe the sensor end would need to be enclosed in a poly bag or similar. Is there enough room?

Hi, first off can you go into your profile and edit the details of your car please? Auto or man and year, model type.  (Edit - blast you have just done it or I didn't see it , sorry) It makes it easier for people helping with this problem and indeed any future issues.

This sort of problem can be something dead simple or it could be a failure in the ABS ECU . Are all your dashboard lights present and working correctly e.g. do they come on at start up and then go off within a few seconds?

You could use a garden potting up tray to catch the oil in. I've had mine years and it is useful for all sorts. They are about £12 and are green ,a yard by a yard approx with a rolled lip. Fairly easy to clean afterwards too being plastic.

Another use is to put tools and parts on to drag around the floor as you work on the car.

Omega General Help / Stalling Auto problem
« on: 27 October 2008, 17:17:09 »
Went out in the car today and got to my destination, car cut out at a junction as I went to set off. Restarted and it was a bit hesistant. Used the trick of holding it on the brake and building the revs up. Without doing that it stalls. Tickover warm is 750 rpm and drops a bit when D is engaged.

Got home OK using that method and have just cleaned the IACV in case that is causing the problem. It seems OK now - just done half a dozen stop starts but perhaps it was a hot engine problem (though temp gauge was fine_.

Anything to worry about? I also think it is missing at low revs but sounds fine when revved. It runs OK too. I guess I am just expecting another calamity.
