General Car Chat / Poor quality or poor memory?
« on: 02 October 2014, 20:53:42 »
During the course of my work I come into close contact with many varied vehicles of all sorts of ages, and I have noticed that either materials/fittings in some are apparently getting worse. In the new shape Micra I have seen all too many with the drivers carpet worn through to the flooring with anything from 6 to 9,000miles on the clock!Another one I seem to be seeing more of is cars fitted with keep fit[as opposed to electric]windows in the rear doors appear to suffer with the window dropping just fractionally, the worst culprit for this ime is the present Fiesta and the previous two versions, although others are beginning to show these signs also.So is it poorer quality/cheaper/flimsier materials that are being used?Or is it just my failing memory whereby I don't remember these things happening in days past?

I see/hear she has died at the age of 64.Now I can't immediately bring to mind any of her songs but I always figured her as being pretty fanciable! But sad to hear of her passing.

On this date 21yrs ago Maureen and I started living together. We met-if that's the proper term as pen friends and things moved on from there. She made it clear from the outset that if I were to propose she'd say no,for my part I said it wouldn't apply as I was never going to propose anyway. So we've bumbled along quite nicely ever since. We've never had any money to speak of but we don't have a bad lifestyle even though we've only ever had two holidays in all that time.I can honestly state that although we've each done things that have ticked the other one off-I'm way ahead on points there!!-we have never yet had an argument!

General Car Chat / Nice!
« on: 23 September 2014, 20:30:01 »
I must admit I'm no great fan of modern car design,I find most to be bland or plain ugly.As I'm based on the premises of a main dealers I get to see quite a lot of new vehicles coming and going-and some older ones too,but today a car arrived on site that I didn't recognize the look of,although I thought that looks nice!Anyway interest piqued I figured a wander over to have a quick gander was in order. From the front I didn't associate it with any "family face"that I'd seen and the marque logo centred on the nose was unfamiliar to me also.Moving to the side profile gave a good looking 4 door saloon with flush fitting chromed door handles, but again no clue to identity.Looking inside the dash was also an unknown-though I think it'd have to grow on me,again no clues! So to the rear and there set fairly high up on the boot was a chromed strip a la XF and there imprinted on it at last the marque name,it read TESLA!!!I know nothing of the model hierarchy of these but to the lower near side of the boot it said model s and to the offside 85.But wherever it sits in the line up it was damnably nice!!!!!!

With todays points haul,Valentino Rossi became first rider to amass 5,000 points during a career in G.P. racing.Okay he's had a fair time to do it in[first season 1996]but still some going, and he's got at least another 2 and a bit seasons to increase his tally.

General Car Chat / Cactus
« on: 04 September 2014, 20:58:17 »
Yes this is in the right section. The Cactus in question being the name chosen by Citroen for its new addition to the C4 range.Has anyone else seen one?I've seen two so far,one in white with  the rubber/plastic/whatever they're made from panelling in a truly awful shade of brown and the other in metallic green with black panelling. What were they thinking! Were they onsomething illegal when they came up with this one?I'm only sorry I can't do some kind of picture link or something-but I'm sure someone cleverer than I will do so.

« on: 27 August 2014, 20:05:35 »
Watching British superbike racing on Monday and I'm positive I heard one of the commentators say that Brough Superior were going to make a race bike!Although the name is a real blast from the past I believe they're still a going concern based[I think]in Switzerland but I thought they only did spares for the original bikes or made full bikes-in the style of the originals-to special and expensive order.

General Discussion Area / Sports questions
« on: 23 July 2014, 21:47:48 »
The subject of sport came up in conversation at work today.Okay mainly football, which I have absolutely no interest in and even less knowledge of.However I was asked a couple of questions on sports that I do watch[although I'm no expert in either]the first was
Speedway bikes-who makes them?Unlike other bike racing there seems to be no manufacturer competition,so what make are they and does the company make anything else. After all there can't be enough demand for speedway bikes to keep a company afloat can there?
The second was a totally different and unrelated sport, namely ski flying[or jumping if you prefer]At what point is the flight deemed to have ended and thus distance covered determined? The tail of the skis touch down ever so slightly before the foot area does, with the front end of the skis last.So is it when any part of the ski touches the ground or when the skiers feet are down or the whole of the ski?

General Car Chat / Top 100
« on: 17 July 2014, 20:16:35 »
Been given a copy of Autocar[7 may 2014]in which there is a piece on Britains best ever top 100 cars.In at 100 is the Range Rover Evoque, while at 1 is the Mini[the real one]the BMW effort is at 19.The Jaguar XJ only makes it in its current form at 36 just one place above the Rover 75.From Vauxhall there is the Astra[98],Chevette HSR[94]Lotus Carlton[86],Prince Henry[39].At 67 is the Bowler EXR[hands up those who've heard of it].A blast from the past[as if the Prince Henry isn't]is the aero engine Napier Railton-wasn't that Sir Henry Seagraves chariot of choice?-at 63.Now don't forget these are the favourite British car of all time, because at 77 there is the Renault Megane RS225,at 49 the Subaru Imprezza WRC,and at 5 the Yamaha Motiv.E[and I thought the new Citroen C1 was ugly!!!!

An aftermarket thermostat from eurocarparts which came in at £20.99p what Vauxhall choose to call a drain tube this came in at £9.77p with the "O"rings at 97p each and with v.a.t. a total of £13.36p so for a total price of £34.35p I don't think that's too bad.All I need now is some coolant and the spare time to do the job!!

General Car Chat / Odd side effect
« on: 04 July 2014, 20:38:49 »
The battery on the Omega was about on its last legs,if I left car alone for any more than 4 days it'd be too flat to start car.Luck on my side a bit for once as a friend was scrapping a car with a battery less than 6months old which was the right size,so a swap was done my dud battery went off to scrappers and a nearly new one took its place.Engine now spins over faster than it's ever done. However an odd side effect seems to have cropped up.With the old battery the temp.gauge would[under the right conditions as car has a lazy thermostat]indicate 95 and the fans would cut in until indicated temp. was about 88ish and fans would then stop. Now with new battery on fans cut in when gauge indicates 90 and stop when an indicated 85 is on the gauge. Why the difference?everything is the same[i.e.roads travelled, driving style traffic conditions etc.]except for the battery swap.Just curious is all.
P.S.Thermostat change will take place as soon as work and caring for Maureen allow the time.

General Car Chat / Oil seal
« on: 29 June 2014, 12:51:29 »
Friend of mine has a '02 plate Toyota Yaris on which the front crank oil seal is failing/has failed as he  has a pretty bad oil leak from that area.Anyone know how complicated a job it is on these cars to change seal?Engine is a D4-D diesel.
