In seriousness I think they are perhaps starting to check thyroid levels as a routine thing at a certain age now? I know they checked my mums recently (which was low) and I know it also tends to slow up with age.
I also think the effects are more than just weight gain/loss but also include things like bone density (osteoporosis) and a host of other bits & bobs, not least your bits & bobs..
I was told that when its being checked, make sure he doesn't have both hands free
