Forgive me Mr. STMO, but as an Omega owner you should know by now that ANY 5 minute job shouldn't take more than half a day........

General Car Chat / Re: Engine treatment (compression repair)

A very experienced fleet manager once explained the oil situation thus:-
Oil itself never wears out, but motor oil is loaded with detergents and other additives, which do. The oil then does not do its job properly and the engine will gum up and/or wear rapidly. He advocated an oil change interval of no more than 5,000 miles - and that from a cost-concious fleet manager!
Makes sense to me.....

In my Carlton a few years back, I went to a Camera Fair in a school south of trhe river (I DID have a passport!) and I found I couldn't get out of the car, and every time I unlocked it, the bugger locked itself back up again!
It wasn't because a North Londoner ventured south of the river; the school had a few microwave comms link dishes on a mast above the building........

Jason, you are bound to be right and I am out of date, but I thought the issue with cameras that took photos of the front of the vehicle was one of privacy and for that reason, the EU outlawed them?
The strength of feelings on this topic, albeit from a motoring group, does show that the law does not represent the will of the people in this and, as we all know, is much more to do with revenue collection than safety - hence your comment on their "never being placed correctly"; they are correctly placed to generate maximum incone......

I always understood that only the "Truvelo" speed camera was approved for forward-facing photos, and hence valid as evidence for prosecution, not any old van?

A quick mental calculation suggests that it might just about make it, assuming that you want the water not much more than hand-hot, i.e. about 50-ish degrees Celcius. Could you fit two, both to have spare capability and in case commercial use is too much for one?

General Car Chat / Re: Cambelt or Camchain. Which is best?
« on: 28 February 2015, 13:53:53 »
Reaching back into the depths of my memory, the BMC A-Series engine as fitted to my Autin A30 (and the Morris Minor?) had a brilliant timing chain arrangement whereby the chain was lubricated via the centre of a wear-adjusting neoprene-faced slipper, meaning that it was always under the correct tension and well lubricated. That was courtesy of Reynolds, the chain people, I think?
If they could get it SO right back then, what is their excuse now? Apart from being cheaper to make and assuring them of a regular service income.........

"VXL", which sensor fails due to heat, crank or camshaft? Would it be silly to suggest trying to organise some kind of heat shield and/or thermal isolation?

Almost a result, Mr. Vamps. I am charging the battery as I type but tomorrow I want to find out why it got so low and if it will hold a charge - or, horrid thought - where is the current drain?
More to come, I fear, but I thank all for their help and concern.

Yay! I tried the Lizzie technique (thanks Lizzie) and after some jiggling, the door opened!
The battery was down to 10 volts, but even so the central locking should have worked?
As soon as I connected the charger, the horn sounded....frantic searching for the key fob - it worked.
More investigation needed in the morning, but the battery is fairly new and the only left unused for 3 days.....

Definitely the correct key, Al; I own just the one car - and it won't turn more than a few degrees in the lock. I don't want to force it and break the key off in the lock!

Neither key, main nor spare, unlocks the doors - batteries ok as the LEdflashes, and I cannot open the door mechanically with the key.
Too cold and dark now to mess about, but if it's due to low car battery, is there a way to open the bonnet to charge it?
