Omega General Help / Re: which alloys???

Ohhh, very beautiful.

Zafira GSi's one of those cars that people could criticise as a compromise (of you want an sports car, then buy on etc..) but they really are amazing handers and utterly underrated, aren't they? And by the way, the alloys look stunning on that! Are they the 19s you could have as an option over the standard 18s on the Astra VXR?

There's often questions on here along the lines of 'what do you think this/these would look like on my car' and generally the final answer is the same-

It's your car, if everyone on this forum thinks you look a twerp, but you think it looks good, then go for it! Ultimately, your own opinion is always the best!

My twopenneth, personally is VXR wheels from an Astra/ Vectra look amazing on Omegas :-)

Plus the usual check for stones etc. See if the pad contact patch is going glazed, this is a sign of over-heating or pad contamination (such as grease as already mentioned) All this could be temporary as the pads bed in. but if theres contamination, best to find out sooner than later.

Omega General Help / Re: rear wiper install???

Apart from a brief fling with hatchbacks, we've always had at least 1 saloon on the drive.  I have never, ever felt any have needed a rear wiper.

Many hatchbacks don't need them either, only those cars with near vertical backs...

Correct. It's all down to the turbulence over the rear screen at speed that decides whether you need or not a rear wiper. Omegas are very clean cars, aerodynamically.

I take you have a saloon. Why do you need a rear wiper? I can only think of a handful of 3 box saloons that have ever had a rear wiper, Orion & a Honda of some sort. A hatch back needs a rear wiper due to the shape of the back of the car & air turbulence throwing crap from the road up & onto the rear screen, a proper saloon doesn't have these problems. Just watch where the rain water flows when it stars to rain on the motorway, you get 2 streams running from the top corners towards the bottom middle. Besides, I don't think there's room for a motor ....... and it'd not look right.  ;)

Spot on. All I could possibly add to that is that in the case of the Orion/Honda (Ballade, concerto? one of them, anyway) the reason they probably had wipers was a dodgy saloon 'conversion' at the design stage, rather than being given a wiper as 'extra spec.' Dont think that Russelsheim was just being tight by not fitting one. Aquaphobic sprays definitely a good thing, by the way.  :y

Omega General Help / Re: TD Cooling
« on: 25 October 2010, 11:36:06 »
Yep. Often run cold. Watched a friend check out the actual temp on a BMW TD via tech 2 once, found the gauge was a couple of degrees out, 'under'. Plus it took aaaages to warm up to mid-point put did get there eventually. He just took in to account that the gauge ran a little under from then on.

Oh course if these are decent rubber it may well be worth your while sourcing some cheap lower-spec alloys? ie: those designed for 205 rubber. Again, as cem says the speedo will still be out. Depends if you dont mind people thinking you own a CD, instead of and Elite (are people that pedantic where you live?)

Hmmm...As stated on the other thread (-link provided above) and I was the one saying that you'd be ok with 215s - however I think 205 is starting to push it a bit. Rolling radius would be different, cem is quite correct, so speedo will be out

(just done a quick calculation and I make the speedo will be out by 8.8%, though someone with better maths skills than I may give a completely different figure!) So indicated 91.1mph @ actual 100mph (my brain hurts)

As you have an Elite that means you have 7.5J x 16 wheels(?) as opposed to the 7Js that a 205 would run on. So thats nearly an inch NARROWER tyre running on a half-inch WIDER rim.

There are the facts, go forth my son, and do with them what you wish!  :y

Yep, shop around, it's amazing what you can find. Although I would second the motion that if it aint broke etc... Are you really in need to spend over 1100 quid on your car? For that money you could buy a spare omega, and just use that one when this one breaks! Think of it as an 1555kg biro. :-)

Honestly, was hugely impressed with the autoglym stuff. It's like the jelly-like consistency of v cold diesel (you'll know what I mean if you've ever happened across some old summer diesel left in the garage during winter. I have, but then i dont have many friends. So swings and roundabouts  :D )

And it's fantastic, it isnt greasy, or leave a nasty silicone resedue either. Just rub it in well, and it last forever and a day. Back to black I always swore by, but that is, as amba says literally like boot polish - ie: it has a die in it, so physically stains the plastic. Not a bad thing, the end results the same, but trust me, go for the autoglym stuff, if I were you.

Omega General Help / Re: Tyre question.
« on: 24 October 2010, 15:23:56 »
As does fitting a non-standard badge to your car, if you haven't told your insurers about it, they can use something as trivial as that to weasel out of a payout. Tyre stretching in Germany is very much the 'thing'.

But bear in mind that the 215 figure refers to width in mm, so really your dealing with a 10mm difference from 215 to 225, thats only 5mm either side of 'stretch'. Look at your wheels, and visualise 5mm, it's not much.

Incidentally:
GLS/CD 7J x 15 alloys
Reflection/Tourer/CDX/Elite 7J x 16 alloys

BUT the GLS/CD have 205, wheras the Reflec/Tourer/CDX/Elite have 225s

So Vauxhall say you can put 205s or 225s on a 7J rim, I reckon you can put 215s on. :-)

Hi all,

Thanks for your replies so far. As I say I've only been brought in on this, so only have fairly sketchy details, but will try and get more details as soon as I can.

Very interesting about the ECU then altering the PAS / speedo. He never mentioned any issues with either, so we may be looking at a simpler fix than first thought. Am i right in saying there's tech 2 required in replacing the ABS ECU? (and therefore unavoidable cost, regardless of how cheap we can get a replacement ABD ECU for)

So if (crossed fingers!) it isnt the ABS ECU..are we talking an ickle cheap-to-replace sensor, then?

oh, and to answer aaronjbs question, yes, its a 98 model, with side arbags, so must be mini-facelift.
Not if you get one off the same model and spec motor (eg same gearbox etc) :y

Fantastic news!! I did wonder just how pedantic the ECU would be, but I thought Id heard it said it needed tech 2-ing. Thanks dbug!!

Haha! Quite right. So, just out of intrest, you dont have any personal experience of the iffy ABS thing? I have never come across it, you see, and was a little surprised when he said it wasn't working.

Well I was going to say something along the lines of 'oh, getting a spare shouldn't be too hard as there's a couple in our local scrappy' but seeing you're in Grimsby, we live about three inches away from each other, I think I'd rather give my money to a fellow Oofer!!

Thanks for that. If it comes to needing a new ABS unit, i may well be calling on you. (along with any other parts that he may need, as there's always something, isn't there?)
