General Discussion Area / Early Christmas present
« on: 18 December 2007, 15:13:35 »
Just got a cheque for £300 from my insurance company. Returned excess from the claim I made after a biker stoved in my front bumper in Italy in September. Seems 3rd party admitted liability and paid up :y

I guess it's not a present really. Just money of mine they've been "borrowing" for a few months >:(

General Discussion Area / LPG Kit Bulk Buy - Who's up for it?
« on: 28 November 2007, 11:08:55 »
Well, JamesV6CDX's LPG conversion went very smoothly, the kit seems to include everything required and there were no issues whatsoever fitting it to an Omega.

I also heard back from Jeremy today regarding the bulk buy I proposed and he's prepared to offer a discount of 10% on the front end kits giving a saving of about £50 off the EBay price of £495.

Regarding the fitting, James and I were thinking about this at the weekend. 3 of us spent the best part of a weekend getting his car up and running. We did everything except fitting the LPG tank and mounting and connecting the filler and it was pretty hard work. We did spend a bit of time chasing round for parts on Saturday morning and the obligatory breaks for tea, bacon sarnies and (later in the day) beer. I'm not sure that we'd get a lot of kits fitted at an "LPG party" if we were going to tackle complete installs. However, as long as people are happy to tackle the straightforward bits themselves (tank and filler fitting, pipe & cable routing, vapouriser mounting, etc.) I think a party where we finish off the details and do the tricky bits, make electrical connections, check systems over and adjust fuel maps would be a good idea.

Having seen James' install I'm certainly happy to go ahead with it myself. Do we have any more who are prepared to firm up their interest in this?

Spotted whilst under his car this weekend:

Some further development required after initial testing. Oil changes said to be "a bit of a pain in the @rse".

General Discussion Area / Jamesv6CDX project LPG: Success
« on: 25 November 2007, 20:58:00 »
More details to follow but after a long weekend of spanner wielding James' V6 is running on LPG!

A bit of a misfire under load at medium RPM on LPG which we think is ignition related, and which seems to be clearing gradually with LPG miles. Other than that it all went very smoothly.

It was a lot of work but hopefully there'll soon be a favourable report on how it went on the way home.

General Discussion Area / Who is it?

It's putting me off my work OOF posting.

General Discussion Area / LPG kit bulk buy & / or install party
« on: 02 November 2007, 11:13:12 »
Hi All,

As discussed in other threads a few of us are considering LPG conversion, and with Jay W having gone for one of these kits, pleased with it and getting on nicely with the install by the sounds of it, let's see what firm interest we have.

This is the kit:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330170356040

I have spoken to the guy about the possibility of a discount for buying in bulk and something is on the cards. Probably not much and depending on numbers but there is at least the potential to save a little. We shouldn't need as much of his time by us not all buying individually and requiring support individually.

For the really keen here is the manual:

http://www.ac.com.pl/autogaz/programy/pliki/Instruction%20of%20Stag-200,%20Stag-300%20controller.pdf

If you have a 4 pot I don't doubt that he'll be able to supply a kit for that, so don't let that put you off.

In addition, an LPG party has been mooted. I'm not sure what format this would take. Having had a look over my car last night the install is going to be quite involved and I wonder if we could make that much progress on a number of cars over the course of a day / weekend, however, we could regard it as a day to share experiences of the wrong and right way to do things, we could ensure that cars are prepared with pipes run and holes drilled beforehand and regard it as a "finishing-off" session. Comments welcome.

So, let's see who's interested.

I think what we need to gather is the following:

Your name
Your location
Your engine
Front End required? - the bits under the bonnet (evaporator, injectors, ecu, sensors, wiring loom)
Back End Required?  - the bits in the boot (Tank, straps, valves, filler)
Preferred tank type? - just out of interest (Cylinder, toroidal (Estate), vertical toroidal (saloon))
Interested in an LPG party?

So, I'll set the ball rolling:

Kevin Wood, Alton, 3.2 V6, Yes, Yes, Cylinder / V. toroid, Yes

Over to you....

General Discussion Area / Well, it made me laugh
« on: 17 October 2007, 17:33:17 »
One day Mr. Smith, the president of a large corporation, called his vice-president, Dave, into his office and said, "We're making some cutbacks, so either Jack or Barbara will have to be laid off." Dave looked at Mr. Smith and said, "Barbara is my best worker, but Jack has a wife and three kids. I don't know whom to fire."

The next morning Dave waited for his employees to arrive. Barbara was the first to come in, so Dave said, "Barbara, I've got a problem. You see, I've got to lay you or Jack off and I don't know what to do?" Barbara replied, "You'd better jack off. I've got a headache."

General Discussion Area / Save fuel - Don't charge your mobile!

Spotted on the DVLA web site advice for "Greener Driving":

air conditioning and other on-board electrical devices (like mobile phone chargers) increase fuel consumption, so only use them when necessary

So, exactly how many MPG will my mobile phone charger lose me?

General Discussion Area / We're back...
« on: 16 September 2007, 22:19:31 »
Well, 2333 miles later the Omega has been to France, Switzerland, Italy, Austria, Germany, Luxembourg & Belgium. Didn't miss a beat the whole way and no fluids topped up.

ermm. Well, other than the 84.6 gallons of petrol :o

Still, I was happy with 27.5 to the gallon considering the mountain passes, congested italian cities and the slightly elevated cruising speeds   :y It was showing 30 to the gallon before we started hitting lumpy bits of ground.

One mishap.  A biker descending a mountain pass in Italy dropped his bike in front of me after he took a corner wide and his front wheel hit gravel under braking. The bike damaged my front bumper.  :'( No-one was hurt and I was stopped at the time of the accident so I'm hoping the claim will go my way.

So, what's the news round here?

Leaving to catch a ferry at 6 AM tomorrow and smelt a distinct whiff of petrol when I parked up today.

Look under the car and there's evidence of the fuel filter leaking  >:(

It's clearly been leaking for some time judging by a bit of dirt build up and it looks like it's leaking from the filter itself, where the 2 parts of the can are crimped together, although I didn't want to pull it about too much as it's not leaking enough to cause too much of an issue and I didn't want it to open up to a gusher.

Guess I'd better dash to Halfords before they close as I'd rather have one in the toolbox.  :(

General Discussion Area / VXR Track Day - Report
« on: 06 July 2007, 10:33:28 »
Thought someone might be interested in the following report from a mate of mine who went...

Kevin

Quote
Mike James, Gav and myself attended the VXR day today at Donington Park and it
was a blast.

We were in a group of about 30 and there were about the same number of cars
available so as you completed one session you just strolled over to another
car and jumped in.

The Corsa, Astra & Vectra were stunning but personnally I did not like the V8
particularly. In all we had 1 1/2 hours on the track and did about 15-20 laps
in total. The VXR package IMHO is very good. Oh we also had a lap with one of
their competition drivers hjust to see what they could really do!!

We then moved on to the "Driving Excitement" arena to do a short agility
section and a handbrake turn in a gap between an inflatable car and some
boxes.

Pleased to say the Se7ners held their end up with Mike & I coming runners up
on the agility and Gav managing to totally knacker the gearbox on one of the
Astra's!!!!

In all it was very well organised and well worth the money so many thanks to
whoever put us on to it.
