Omega`s Rebirth
« on: 30 October 2016, 16:37:54 »

Hi all!

Today i want to show some work, i did on my Omega 2.0 16 V earlyer this year. The car was out of use for two years and was stored in a workshop. It was build in 1998 and it runs very good. Because the car is part of the famaly, i never will give our Omega away.

Not so bad, but what was behind the Bumper?

from inside

To the left frontside - righside was OK

looks rusty on the surface, but no holes, no?

The Problem was behind the double faced sheets of metall.

New brakes

New suspension

Big problem under driver´s seat

Some other problems

Ready for the tecnical inspection, called TÜV in Germany and got an licence plate!

Next i will describe the revision of the doors and some additional work around the car.

Best regards

Rolf

The little spring inside was broken

That's looking good Rolf  :y

A few of us are finding rust in the same places, but time, patience and some money fixes the problem!

Hi VXL V6

I do not know the situation in UK, but here in Germany it is very important where a car comes from. Here in Lahr (Rhine area  southwest close to France) winter operation is not a real problem for a modern classic. The winter is mild (sometimes a little mediterran) and i can avoid Omegas contact with salt on the street. But my saloon comes from the Stuttgart area. The winter situation there is complete different. Ice, snow and salt on the street is normal there in winter. So the damage appears.

But i am not afraid because of rust. Though i have control over welding , i will not use my saloon in winter again. Because of my job, i have to drive weekly to Donaueschingen, crossing the Blackforest. Winter conditions are guaranteed there...

My saloon took his last ride this year today. We drove away from the Rhine fog up in the sunny hights. Next week i will change the cars for winter

Best regards

Rolf

THX jimbo

It took 4 months to bring the Omega back on the road again, because i can only work on the car during weekend. Over the summer i started to do some "cosmetics"

First, every Omega sooner or later gets problems with rust at the doors and around the rear wheels. The Problem was caused during produktion. Opel sets point of welding into glueing zones, so aggressive gas appears under the seal.

The only solution is to cut away all rust and replace the areas. So i did. Enjoy the pictures.

I think this is a well known pickture for many Omega owners. Rust at drivers door (LHD=left front door)

First i removed the outer part

cleaning and pepare the zone

fitting the new part

welding

There is no plastic or presto!

Same job above the right rear wheel

The left side was finnished in July

Best regards

Rolf

Hi VXL V6

For real personal assistance the way from here to you is a little long. But if you have real questions, please feel free to ask. I have plenty solutions in Omega bodywork. All have gone through the German "TÜV" without any problem....

Andy, there's  Z157 car up my neck of the woods - are front doors, bonnet, bootlid, possibly NS front wing any use? Sadly the rear doors have had average bodywork and a ton of filler on them at some point.

It's an immaculate N/S/R door that I really need but sadly not really got the time at the moment to pick one up.

Immaculate panels are getting hard to find now....  :'(

Hi Rolf!

I have seen this pics on german site (opel-freak IIRC) before.
It's great that you have put in an effort to document your work-progress, as it is a useful guide for anybody who want's to tackle rust on their omega on DIY basis. And it shows that it's not that hard to fight the rust. Some skill and lot of will/elbow greese.

Hi Bojan

It is very easy. I like to motivate other Omega owners to do what I have done. It is easy. Learning by doing, step by step. An Omega is worth to work on it.

Hi

Something about my Caravan.

Two years ago i needed a transporter, only for a few months. So I decided to buy a very low budget Omega Caravan. MOT was about one year and the car was mechanical in very good condition. It comes with a thick map of workshop invoices. Even the AC was new and worked perfect. That is important here in Lahr, because Summer temperatures near 40°C can appear.

But the Caravan came from Bavaria, Germanys Sibirian winter corner. So body conditions were rather poor. Specially the left side was rusty on the doors and the rear arche.

The Caravan did a good job across Europe and so I decided to bring him through the MOT again. Mechanical only new rear brakes were needed, including handbrake. No Problem.

But also "a little" bodywork was needed  8)

UOOPS.....

The Caravan is not pretty, but he is an honest worker and he passed the MOT last year without any problem. I will use the Caravan this winter as an daily driver.

Best regards

Rolf

P.S.

Right side is still a little better than the left side was two years ago. But I think, there is a "little" work needed next springtime....

Hi jimbo

Thank you. I am not a professional but I want to show all Omega owners that nothing is impossible to do by DY.

There was another "funny" area on the Caravan. First I thought it was only on the surface and I decided to grind it away. But of course there was o hole after that.

Another problem appears
