I've just sent a small packet in an ordinary letter sized jiffy bag weighing 290g, and for 2nd class signed for it cost £3.90!!  :o

Hermes would have charged £2.39!   ::)

i've found parcel2go to be good, effectively a comparison site for shipping but they take care of everything.

Parcel2go are ok for sending stuff within the UK. Try using them for international postage and you enter a whole world of pain, and they wash their hands of any responsibility.
As for Royal Fail, I have no idea how they manage to keep going. The business model seems hopelessly out of date.

my hermes will lose it/nick it for that money, so better off staying with royal mail
My hermes are shite, lost several items being sent to me, or deliver to wrong address than send  me a txt saying your parcel has been sucessfully deliverd, omiting to say where they have delivered it to.
they said that they had posted an air con pump though my letter box. yeh right.
