Author Topic: Sticky front Caliper - any advice before I have a look and free off ?  (Read 2212 times)

I suspect the front n/s brake Caliper is slightly sticking.

Any advice before I have a look to free it off, lube it up.

Seals I believe are ok.  May just need to be worked a bit as car not do that many miles and does sit for a week (inside  :y)

Orderd some high temp grease for sliding pins just to be sure.

Usually the sliding bit that sticks. Jut a good clean up & a  bit of lube on the sliding bits  :y

If the rubber cover on the piston is split then moisture will have got in and corroded piston and caliper casting

I have a couple of decent front calipers here if you need to replace, not far away from you

I'll take a look over the weekend to see what is what.  Hopefully piston rubbers are OK as last time I looked they were, and she has probably only done £2k miles in the 2 years I last looked as I put new GM disks and pads on then !  ;)

Currently on 64k miles on clock  :D

Wheel off today, and its the piston that is sticking.   >:(

Assume changing the caliper is simple to do.  I have a bleed kit.

I've not done one myself. So far as I can tell the main part is to clamp the rubber brake hose so you don't introduce any air into the ABS pump. If this is wrong some please correct this.

Hope this helps. I have to do my OS/F at some point.

Thanks for advice.  I've not got a hose clamp, but sure I can improvise, being careful not to pierce the pipe !

Kind of ..... It stops the fluid from draining out of the brake pipe & ultimately draining the reservoir which would allow air into the whole (half of it really as it's a split circuit)) system, not just the ABS pump. It's getting the air out of the ABS pump that's the difficult bit.

Vise/mole grips .... but be gentle  ;)

If using vice/mole grips put a couple of sockets on the jaws to avoid damage to brake hose.However Halfords sell hose clamps at about £6 apiece.

I don't like the idea of clamping a brake hose(although for some reason I do have a couple of proper clamps) and have never bothered. If you place the loose end of the hose as high as you can, you don't lose much fluid. IF I was worried about it leaking, I'd flare a short length of brake pipe and solder/araldite the other end end shut.

Since you're overhauling or replacing a caliper consider changing the brake fluid.

I replaced drivers front caliper for the same reason. Sticking caliper, it was as simple as changing the pads.  Undo the flex hose from caliper. I used the proper hose clamp but tightened just enough to restrict flow, then lifted it up once disconnected from the caliper. Undid the two guide bolts, 13mm socket and 17mm spanner to undo them.  11mm on the flex hose to caliper bolt. Then it is a reverse when putting new one on. I replaced the two copper seals when fitting the banjo bolt on, they can be got from the local dealer cheap. Make sure the hose isn't twisted when refitting. Then it is a matter of bleeding the brakes the way you like. 9mm spanner.

Took me about 1/2 hour including stopping for rain break.
