UNUSUAL STEERING PROBLEM
« on: 01 June 2018, 12:57:16 »

This one has me lost and i dont really know where to go with this one. Driving down a local road last week i wanted to turn left at the junction but something was preventing the steering wheel turning to the left, i put a bit of pressure on the steering wheel and it released and turned but as it did i got a snapping plastic sound from inside the steering column cowling it did this on several turns left and right with the noise the same then it did it no more. i used the car for a further 6 trips with no problem but on the 7th trip it did it again. i have removed the cowling and cannot see anything broken or loose and the problem is that to identify the problem you have to be in the car when it does it would anyone have any pointers as to what this could be, i have never experienced this kind of problem before cant take the car to a garage because you  never know when this will recur. As i said i cannot see anything loose or broken and this is now doing my head in. We have driven the car with the  cowling off but came up with nothing.

Not sure if the internals are identical but probably vaguely similar to the older carlton /senator models and seem to remember an issue on these concerning the adjustable column mechanism / universal joint area. ?  ?

ok today we have identified the problem with the steering wheel jamming on a left or right hand turn directly below the steering wheel is something i think is called a "slip ring" at least i think that is what its called its circular black with a white cover it looks like its plastic, at the point the wheel jams the white cover pops up then down as the wheel frees any one know if this is in fact called a slip ring and if this is correct can it be replaced or is it a matter of replacing the upper column i cant find any pis of it to show but as i said it sits directly below the steering wheel.
