I think I already know the answer but

I recently upgraded my emergencies and occasional call mobile from a cheap samsung to an old iphone 4 ( disguised to look like a 5). Some things are good about it , like the familiar controls, menus and so on. However my two year older ld samsung held its charge on standby for days. This Iphone is always dead. I would say it lasts half a day on 50% charge without making or answering calls. No data use, wifi etc turned off so it is just a dumb phone.

Am I right in thinking the battery is the original and shot?  Supposedly an Apple service centre item but there are how to’s on the net. As ever my problem would be sourcing the right battery for the job.

Anyone know approx  how much a uk back strret specialist would charge ?

very fiddly ,tiny parts ,done wrong phone may play up or die 
better to just get a new one or cheap refurb unit
not a fan of the apple stuff
though i do like apple pie 
android gives so much freedom for free
stupid how they make all these new phones with battery hidden in the guts and un-servicable by joe public

worth looking for one that you can take the back off , remove battery ,swap it etc 
would save the same problem popping up again

In the UK Apple repair centre cost is £79 to replace a battery, which will obviously be genuine and should last at least 3 years. 3rd party repairers much more hit and miss on the quality of the clone battery, which is not so bad if you do the repair yourself, but when you are going to have to include labour costs again if it only lasts 1yr and a day, do you feel lucky, well do you?

I've repaired iPhones and they are easyish where they are well built inside, once you've managed to remove the screen which can be difficult depending on the quality of the suction pads you will need to use, but IME 3rd party clone parts vary considerably in quality and manufacturing fit accuracy which can cause problems and the sticky tape provided is no where as good as the original glue when replacing screens, so they are better/easier to replace as a complete unit of glass/touch sensor/lcd.

Think I paid about £9 for mine, a like for like battery. As said, the iPhone 4/5 are nice phones to work on. One screw on each side of the charging port, pop the lower edge up and you're in. 
Just be careful when you prise the lower edge up so that you don't damage the camera lens frame at the top. Prise up just enough to slide the top out, use plastic tool to pop the ribbon connectors off and you have access to the battery. Battery is held in with sticky stuff so just carefully lever out.

With my eyesight hope for me then when my iPhone 5s battery needs replacing. Last weekend it was almost flat on standby in about 36 hours.

Having said that I soaked my normal watch, on Saturday, which stopped working and my smart watch a stainless steel Casio Databank battery was flat and I had every type except a CR2016. Ordered two through the post which turned up on Tuesday, checked my normal watch where I had left it drying out and still not working. Took the back off the smart watch and the battery clip was a pig to unclip and when it finally did ping there are 4 very fine springs, 2 which are used for a back open switch which were still in place and 2 for the case back alarm bleeper contact which had gone walkies. These spring are about 3mm long and 0.75mm in diameter and are on the floor somewhere. After about 10 minutes of scanning the floor with a torch and magnifying glass I found one of them and about 5 minutes later the other one. With a new battery watch was working outside of the case and each time I held it together okay, but once I replaced the back using a bright torch and magnifying glass to see where the fiddly 2x0.5mm screws locate and doing them up to hold the back all it displayed was a 0 with nothing else working including the buttons. By trial and error finally got it working where making sure the case cas located exactly right and the order of tightening the back screws made a difference. Went to sling the broken watch in a draw and it was working perfectly. Sods law at its finest. But at least my scratched up plastic cased everyday watch will carry on getting further scratched while the smart one stays smart where I will only use it when I go out now it is working again.
